Mental Health Officer Training

- All classes have been temporarily cancelled due to the recent changes made by TCOLE. When the new curriculum has been updated, we will begin offering classes again.
The purpose of the Mental Health Officer course is to further inform and educate the officer in the area of mental health and issues pertaining to serving as a mental health officer, to include advanced crisis intervention training.
This class is required to obtain the Mental Health Officer Certification.
NOTE:Personnel who have successfully completed the Basic Instructor class may teach most CIT classes after the successful completion of this class and certification as a Mental Health Officer. This course does NOT, however, provide for meeting all of the necessary requirements for teaching the TCOLEs Course #1850. Having the Mental Health Officer certification does not equate to being a Mental Health Officer, which is a specified role within a police agency.

Mississippi officials give update on 2 officers shot and killed in Bay St. Louis
Bay St. Louis Police Sgt. Steven Robin and officer Branden Estorffe spoke to veterinarian Amy Anderson for nearly a half-hour before she fired at them while sitting in a parked vehicle in a hotel parking lot.
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. – A longtime veterinarian and mother has been identified as the woman who shot and killed two police officers in Mississippi on Wednesday, according to local reports.
Amy Anderson, 43, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was sitting in a parked SUV with a female child younger than 10 years old when the officers were sent to the parking lot of a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis around 4:30 a.m. on a welfare check, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
Bay St. Louis Police Sgt. Steven Robin and officer Branden Estorffe spoke to Anderson for nearly a half-hour before she fired at them while sitting in the vehicle, investigators said. During the conversation, the officers called for Child Protection Services, the police statement said.
Robin, 34, died in the parking lot. Estorffe, 23, died a short time later at the hospital, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents said.

It was still unclear what happened to the girl inside the SUV.
“He knew it was his job to make great cops out of young rookies,” Schwartz said.
Investigators are still trying to piece together what led to the fatal shootings.
General Information On How To Become A Law Enforcement Officer
The following information outlines the process by which a candidate may become licensed as a law enforcement officer in the state of Michigan.
Licensing as a law enforcement officer in Michigan must be approved through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards . This happens when the following two requirements are met by the candidate: compliance with MCOLES minimum selection standards which includes satisfactory completion of a basic police academy or recognition of prior training and experience, and employment with a law enforcement agency as a law enforcement officer. Previously licensed police officers in Michigan, or from another state, who are seeking re-licensure are directed to the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.
Basic recruit training, which is the major component of the pre-employment standards, must be completed at an approved training academy. Regional training academies are located throughout the state. All training academies are required to teach, as a minimum, the states basic training curriculum, which is 594 hours in length. At the completion of the academy, all graduates are required to pass a licensing examination administered by the state.

If You Are Stopped Or Detained For Taking Photographs
- Always remain polite and never physically resist a police officer.
- If stopped for photography, the right question to ask is, am I free to go? If the officer says no, then you are being detained, for which an officer must have reasonable suspicion that you have or are about to commit a crime or are in the process of doing so. Until you ask to leave, your being stopped is considered voluntary under the law and is legal.
- If you are detained, politely ask what crime you are suspected of committing, and remind the officer that taking photographs is your right under the First Amendment and does not constitute reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.
