Ian Whittington grew up in the wine country town of Atascadero in Californias scenic central coast and always knew he wanted to become a police officer.
It was his childhood dream.
But what the 25-year-old Whittington didnt know is that Bakersfield Police Department would be instrumental to making his dream come true.
On June 24, Whittington graduated from the Law Enforcement Training Academy at the Bakersfield Police Department.
The road to becoming Officer Whittington wasnt an easy one. He started his career as an Army reserve and then became an Emergency Medical Technician . Through his training in different parts of California, and working with different police departments, he discovered the one-of-a-kind camaraderie at the Bakersfield Police Department.
There seems to be a different bond at Bakersfield PD than any of the other departments Ive worked with, Whittington said. Theres a special connection between the community and its police officers, you can see it everywhere.
After deciding he wanted to become a Bakersfield police officer, Whittington joined the academy, but left after the first day when he realized he wasnt ready physically or mentally to succeed. It was a difficult decision that made him wonder if he was cut out for law enforcement, but he promised himself hed be back.
Citizens Police Academy Wraps Up ‘intense’ Semester
The Citizens Police Academy graduates its Spring 2022. And while the class was smaller than past semesters a byproduct of the pandemic participants raved about the quality of the instruction. To help ensure that quality, the class was treated for the first time to a crime simulator, which forces participants to make real-time decisions that could have life-impacting consequences.

Pennsylvania Trooper Or Highway Patrol Requirements
The Pennsylvania State Police are responsible for traffic control and enforcement on state highways as well as crime scene response and investigation on state property or in cooperation with local law enforcement. Anyone looking to become a Pennsylvania state trooper must meet MPOETC standards and:
- Be between 21 and 40 years of age
- Be a registered resident of Pennsylvania
- Have a valid drivers license
- Have at least 60 college credit hours OR four years of full-time law enforcement experience OR two years of law enforcement experience with powers of arrest plus 30 college credit hours
- Satisfy the PSPs personal appearance policies regarding hygiene, body art, and hairstyle
Once admitted to the recruitment program, all candidates must complete a training period of approximately 27 weeks, during which trainees will train in an intense paramilitary-style environment. The starting salary for Pennsylvania state troopers is $61,820 per year.2
How To Become A Police Officer Without A College Education
Although state police departments and federal agencies require you to have a college education, many local police forces will allow you to become a police officer from high school. Prepare for you police career early by taking high school courses in psychology, sociology, government, and social studies. You should also participate in sports and other physical activities so that you stay in good shape and learn to work as part of a team.
Get work experience. Without a college education, you will need to have some work experience to be hired as a police officer. Even part-time and summer jobs will show that you have a strong work ethic, are reliable, and can work as part of a team.
Make sure you have good credit. Police officers must have a good credit score. For young police recruits, this is often an obstacle since they haven’t had the opportunity to build credit. If you are considering a law enforcement career straight out of high school, open a bank account and ask your parent or guardian if they will add you as an authorized user on one of their credit cards.
Take the preliminary written exam. Before you can begin training to become a police officer, you will need to pass a written exam that tests aptitude and basic knowledge.
Pass the physical exam. After you take your written test, you will need to complete a physical exam that will test your eyesight, hearing, agility, and speed.

Police Departments In Pennsylvania

Act 1: Municipal Police Academy
To be employed as a police officer in the state of Pennsylvania,an individual must successfully completea certified Act 120 program and pass the MPOETC state certification exam.
TheCriminal Justice Training Centeroffers full-time and part-time Act 120programs. Full-time academies meet from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and usually take about 22 weeks to complete. Part-time programs are designed for people who work or whose schedules don’t enable them to be in classes all day. These academies meet about 20 hours a week: three evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Duration is about 49 weeks.

It has been 13 years since Pittsburgh police officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo were killed, responding to a call in the Stanton Heights neighborhood.
“I have his chain, I have a tattoo on my arm of him, pictures in every room of my house,” Steve Sciullo said.
Paul Sciullo’s cousins Steve Sciullo and Bill Garrison spoke to students and alumni at Central Catholic High school, on the 13th anniversary of Sciullo’s death.
Paul Sciullo graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1991, then Duquesne University. Sciullo worked in the corporate world before deciding he needed to make a difference and become a Pittsburgh police officer.
“Paul exemplified what Central is all about – just character, faith, service,” Garrison said. “He lived those values.”
Two years after becoming a police officer, Sciullo was killed.
Garrison has now created a podcast, That Was Paul. The podcast shares stories about Paul Sciullo’s life. Many of the stories are told by his parents, Susie and Max Sciullo.
