The Jeanne Clery Disclosure Of Campus Security Policy And Campus Crime Statistics Act

One Georgia police agency is training officers to shoot, not to kill

This federal legislation was originally signed into law in 1990 and was known at the time as the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act. Throughout the years the law has undergone several amendments to include a renaming. However, the purpose behind the legislation has remained constant: to require colleges and universities across the United States to publicly disclose information about crime on their campuses and in the surrounding areas. The United States Department of Education requires institutions to publish an Annual Campus Security Report on October 1st each year. The Annual Campus Security Report provides crime statistics up to three years prior in specific campus crime related categories. For further information on the history of The Clery Act and the type of information campuses must disclose, visit The Clery Center for Security on Campus

Ga Cases Show Active School Shooter Hoaxes Becoming National Threat

Eric Stirgus

Several Georgia counties received false claims Wednesday about active school shooters, state officials said.

Its become a disturbing national trend, experts say.

Thirty-four states and Washington, D.C., have received such false claims, also known as swatting, since early September, according to a National Association of School Resource Officers review of news coverage.

These hoaxes are far from harmless, the association said via email Wednesday afternoon to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They can exacerbate mental health issues already more prevalent because of the pandemic. They tie up valuable law enforcement resources. And they can even cause injury.

Channel 2 Action News reported in September a Riverdale police officer crashed his vehicle headed to a reported active shooter threat at a Clayton County middle school that happened to be false.

Alabamas state school superintendent said several high schools received false active shooter reports Tuesday. At least five Washington schools received similar hoaxes on Monday, according to news reports in that state.

In Georgia, most of the false threats occurred at schools near the coast.

Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement Wednesday condemning the swatting incidents.
