Successfully Pass A Background Check

You can expect any law enforcement agency youre applying for to conduct a number of checks into your background, including criminal history and even credit history. While this isnt literally the first step to becoming a police officer, it is the first one youll need to consider before you get too invested in the process. If you have concerns about how your background might impact your candidacy, you may want to consult a police academy admissions representative about it.

Your credit history may be analyzed because it gives potential employers an idea of your level of responsibility and potential problems like gambling-related debts. Police departments look into applicants history of criminal activity, employment, residency and academic records as well.

Basically, the police department is going to get deep into your business, says Adam Plantinga, and 17-year veteran sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department. Dont leave anything out on your background packet. If you omit something, even inadvertently, and it comes to light, you will likely be eliminated as a candidate. Departments are looking for responsible people who play by the rules.

Things like felonies and gross misdemeanors could disqualify you from becoming a police officer, but less serious offenses could also be problematicit really depends on the department and its policies.

Candidates that meet the minimum eligibility requirements and have passed all three components of initial testing may be selected by the Police Department to advance further in the hiring and selection process. It is at this point where the department will conduct a “deep dive” investigation into the qualifications, background, and health of the candidate, to further screen the candidate’s fitness for employment.

There are no nationwide standards for the screening of police officers – laws and regulations establishing minimum requirements are set by state and local agencies – however, there are many common procedures, outlined below, that most departments will administer to determine which candidates will advance to the academy and receive an appointment.

Personal History Questionnaire Evaluation

A Personal History Questionnaire is a survey presented in multiple-choice format, that typically accompanies a full criminal background investigation of the candidate. The purpose of the evaluation is to gather information about the applicant’s personal and professional background and to reveal any criminal associations or history. Candidates are expected to answer the questionnaire truthfully – any inconsistencies or omissions between the answers provided in the PHQ and the information revealed by a comprehensive background check may be a reason for rejection.

Tribal Law Enforcement Authority

Tribes have inherent authority to exercise criminal jurisdiction over tribal members and to arrest and detain non-Indians for delivery to state or federal authorities for prosecution. These tribal police powers are generally limited to the reservation. Tribal police are often critical to resolving criminal cases referred to state and federal agencies because they usually discover the crime, interview witnesses, and understand the circumstances involved.

Commonly, tribal police department funding, administration, and employees are based on the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975, . This law allows tribes to assume responsibility for many programs previously administered by the federal government, including law enforcement. P.L. 638 agencies operate with tribal employees under contract and with financial assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs .

Some tribally operated agencies have a self-governance compact with the BIA. This arrangement provides block grant payments, allowing for more tribal control than the line-item funding of P.L. 638 contracts. Full tribal control over law enforcement services exists where such services are entirely funded by the tribal government.
