Basic Law Enforcement Training Program

THE POLICE ACADEMY!!

The Basic Mandate Law Enforcement program at GPSTC is the top police officer training program in the state of Georgia and is designed for applicants who are interested in becoming law enforcement officers. The program is takes 11 weeks to complete and consists of 408 hours of rigorous training that includes classroom-based lecture and practical skills building sessions. As mandated by state law, all police officers in Georgia must complete this training in order to earn certification through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council .

Students who wish to enroll in the Basic Mandate Law Enforcement program for certification and who are currently employed by a law enforcement agency should contact their supervisor for details. Civilians who wish to attend Basic Mandate to become police officers may do so as pre-service candidates and should carefully read the GPSTC web page on how to become a police officer in Georgia.

The Basic Mandate Law Enforcement program is conducted at our main campus in Forsyth as well as seven regional academies and one contract academy, which are located throughout the state.

Domestic Violence And Sexual Assault Program

The Academy has entered into a collaborative agreement with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault to provide detailed domestic violence and sexual assault training. The program has been funded by a grant awarded to ICADV and INCASA.

Basic police recruits will receive eight hours of training involving victim and officer safety, safety planning, legal issues, impact of arrest, intervention and investigation, victim assistance, overview of sexual assault, police response to sexual assault and a discussion with a panel of domestic survivors.

The Defining Moment Of Police Academy

For many new recruits, the most intimidating part of police academy is their first encounter with the instructors.

Once recruits have been introduced to their instructors, they will be quickly whisked away to take part in the process of Reflection:

They will bring them out into the hallway, theyll have them do push ups, sit ups, wall sits. Various other forms of exercise to intentionally break them down, so they can build them back up in the form of a police officer. Sergeant Paul Davis

If the process of reflection seems a lot like day-one in the military, thats entirely by design. The instructors may seem harsh, unpleasant and generally intimidating to be around, but its vital for new recruits to get used to having superior officers and a rigid chain of command.

Many trainees have limited career experience, especially in such a physically and mentally demanding job as the police force. Learning to handle pressure from the outset could save the lives of fellow officers in the future.

When police departments are interested in hiring you to join the local law enforcement team, they sponsor your attendance at the recruit academy. At the academy, you learn everything you need to know about effectively performing police officer duties. If local police departments are not hiring, it doesn’t mean you should be passive. Instead, take a proactive approach and pay for your own law enforcement academy training. Doing so can make you a frontrunner for open positions when the department starts hiring again.

1

Contact your local or state law enforcement training academy. Ask the academy representative whether self-sponsorship is an option. Not all academies have a self-sponsorship option. If self-sponsorship is an option, request an academy self-sponsored admissions application.

2

Ensure that you meet the academy’s age and citizenship requirements. In most cases, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years of age, and have a high school diploma or GED.

3

4

Pay your academy tuition once you receive notification that you are accepted into the academy. It can take a few weeks to a few months for you to receive this notification, depending upon the academy. Attend training on your scheduled training date. The exact cost for attending the academy varies, but expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to to more than $5,000.

Qualifications For Joining A Police Academy

Individuals who join the police academy come under different circumstances. Some recruits attend the academy after being hired by a local PD, while others will put themselves through the academy. In the case where recruits arent sponsored by a local police department, they will be responsible for all accrued cost, and payments for training. For that reason, self sponsorship isnt all that popular in many states.

For those who are hired by a local agency, and then sent to the academy, they will not incur any costs, plus they will receive a salary during training. What You Should Be Doing To Prepare

Before partaking in any physical activity its required that you visit your physical for a full medical examination and clearance. Physical examination clearance is also a requirement before getting acceptance into the academy. Here are your conditioning tips:

Warm-up or stretch: You need to warm-up before any exercises in order to stimulate your cardiovascular system and muscle groups to reduce your risk for injury and increase performance.

Run: The idea behind running is to increase your speed and endurance, so that you can meet the minimal standards for running at the police academy. Run on both flat and hilly courses for about 1.5 miles every day, while timing yourself, in order to get your time under 11-13 minutes or so.

Strength/calisthenics: You need to develop your ability to get-up and down, squat, lunge, twist, reach, push, jump, and land, which are the typical actions required of law enforcement officers during working hours. Calisthenics build your strength and enhance endurance without causing over-use injuries associated with repetitive motion.

Additionally, the exercises improve mobility by exercising limbs to through a complete, controlled range-of-motion. So, do as many push-ups, sit-ups and chin-ups as you can within a certain time frame, and try to improve gradually, while giving yourself adequate rest between each set of exercises.

Cool down: This is important after vigorous activity to avoid pooling of blood, and sluggish circulation.

How To Prepare For The Police Academy

Are you are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement? The only way you can achieve your goal is by going through a physically rigorous training program that combines hands-on-training, and academic coursework at the police training academy. These core curriculum will bring you up to speed on criminal and traffic laws that govern your state.

If you didnt already know this, police training academies are state operated law enforcement training facilities, and like any other learning institution, all new recruits must pass the police academy tests, as well as a polygraph examination in order to gain acceptance into full-time training program.

Some states also require that all potential recruits pass an oral board interview. However there arent a whole lot of states that require an interview for acceptance, but it was worth mentioning.

Many states like the Vermont Police Academy wont let you step foot on their property unless youve already passed the physical fitness test, psych test, and written examination requirements.
