Why is it so hard to hire black police officers? BBC News

Minimum / Maximum Age Requirement While most agencies require you to be 21 by academy graduation date, some take cadets as young as 18. The maximum age can vary widely. Do not assume that just because you are over 30, your chances of becoming a police officer are over. Some agencies have no maximum age.

Police Are Highly Committed To Their Work But Say More Officers Are Needed

A look inside the nations police departments reveals a great deal about how officers view their jobs, their leadership and their resources. For the most part police officers give their workplace a positive rating and are committed to their agencys success. A solid majority of officers are either very satisfied or satisfied with their agency as a place to work. And an overwhelming share of officers agree that they are strongly committed to making their agency successful.

Still, police do not offer universal praise of their departmental leadership. Only three-in-ten say they are extremely or very supportive of the direction that top management is taking their organization. About half are moderately or slightly supportive and 15% are not supportive at all.

And police express serious concerns about resource limitations. At the most basic level, most police say their department does not have enough officers to adequately police the community. Police who work in larger agencies are more likely than those working in smaller agencies to say that there is a shortage of officers in their department .

Again there are gaps by department size, with smaller departments giving their leadership significantly higher ratings when it comes to training and equipping them, as well as communicating job expectations.

Most officers say their use-of-force guidelines are appropriate and helpful

You Will Have To Make Difficult Decisions

Being a police officer also implies making difficult decisions.

In fact, you will have to decide when it will be appropriate to use your gun and when there will be no need for it.

This can be rather unclear in many situations and one mistake in this regard can even cost your life.

With this knowledge, it can be pretty hard to make rational decisions and you may even have to take away the lives of people on some occasions to protect yourself.

You Will Put Your Life In The Hands Of Your Colleagues

Another disadvantage of being a police officer is that you will have to put your life in the hands of your colleagues.

Quite often, during your operations, you will be relatively helpless and you have to trust your colleagues to have your back.

If your colleagues make mistakes, you could potentially lose your life.

Thus, especially if you are a rather skeptic person who doesnt like to rely on others for such important things, becoming a police officer may also not be the right way to go for you.

Applicants can be declined at any point in the stages listed above and even if a candidate passes every stage, an offer of employment is not guaranteed.

Irregular Shifts Are A Problem

In general, police officers face quite irregular shifts and often dont know how the next weeks will look like for them.

This makes it really difficult since you will never know whether you will be able to pick up your kids the next week or not.

How Important Is Accreditation

Accreditation refers to an outside organization reviewing a particular school or program to ensure it meets certain standards of quality. Accreditation is important for police training programs because it serves as a mark of quality graduates who complete their education and training can be confident that what they have earned will be accepted by future employers and peers. The specific entities that offer accreditation will vary depending on the program. For instance, many associate or bachelors degree programs will not be accredited at the program level, but the school offering the degree will be accredited. This will usually be a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the US Department of Education.

As for the accreditation of police training academies, the most prominent is the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, or CALEA.

    How Hard Is Police Academy

The police academy is, above all, an educational institution. In classroom settings, youll learn the basics of law enforcement, crime prevention, patrol, conflict management, and investigations. You will also complete field training that will cover firearms proficiency, self defense, agility and strength training, and more.

Similar to basic training for a military recruit, this all-encompassing education requires physical and mental endurance. Youll be up early for exercise, attend strict classroom settings, drill in firearms, learn how to use non-lethal measures, and likely spend hours in the hot sun running, jumping, wrestling, and becoming a more physically-fit police recruit. Its not easy, but at the end you will be prepared to face the physical, mental, and emotional rigors of police work.
