Law enforcement fatigue is a real problem, and it’s brought on by excessive overtime, poor sleep habits, bad dietary choices, and too much stress.
The effects of fatigue can’t be understated. In fact, fatigue often mimics impairment and can lead to even greater dangers both on and off the job.
Stage 5 Polygraph Exam
Not all police departments conduct polygraph exams as part of their police hiring process.
Some departments question the accuracy of such exams, whereas other departments vouch for these tests as an extra precautionary tool to be used alongside other tools to establish whether candidates are telling the truth.
Polygraph exams test your physiological responses to questions such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and skin conductivity.
A standard polygraph exam begins by asking you a series of questions. Some of these questions are obviously true, and some are obviously false. This could be as simple as asking you to say your name, for example. These obvious answers establish a baseline for the polygraph to be performed. How you answer more contentious questions is compared against this baseline, and this result is used to establish whether you are likely to be telling the truth. Of course, other factors such as your initial application form detail and any background checks conducted up to this point will also be used to create an overall assessment of the candidate.
Clear Your Medical Exam
In addition to a physical abilities assessment, you probably will be examined by a doctor to make sure you are physically fit and healthy enough to do the job. Unlike the fitness assessment, the medical assessment makes certain your body, heart, and lungs are up for the task.
A separate eye exam to check for depth perception, color blindness, and overall vision is also common. Generally, it is expected that your eyesight is correctable to 20/30 or better, and no worse than 20/40 uncorrected.
Meet The Minimum Requirements
Before a candidate can apply to become a law enforcement officer in Florida, they must meet the minimum qualifications outlined below:
- Age: Must be 19 years of age or older.
- Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen.
- Education: Must be a high school graduate with a high school diploma. A bachelors degree in a relevant field such as criminal justice is encouraged but not mandatory.
- Valid Florida drivers license: All candidates must have a valid drivers license in the state of Florida. You must not have any repeat traffic violations, as this may hinder your chances and will be uncovered during the driving history check of a background investigation.
- Affidavit of Application: Applicants must fill out anAffidavit of Applicant Form and submit it to their hiring Criminal Justice Employing Agency.

Job turnover rates are low for this occupation, which means job seekers may initially face some competition. How Can I Prepare Myself To Be A Strong Candidate
In addition to obtaining a college degree, and of course staying out of trouble, future applicants can help themselves out in various ways. A Policing Matters podcast on the subject offered the following advice.
For starters, says former Police1 Editor-in-Chief Doug Wyllie, “volunteer in your community. Do things where you have responsibility, visible responsibility, and get out there and start cultivating your capability to be a public servant.”
Young people should also consider sports, not only because “healthy cops are good cops, but furthermore, youre going to learn team building.”
“Im a big fan of scouting” as well, he said. “It teaches you structure, it teaches you working through a rank system. It teaches you service.”
Youth explorer programs are also great places to start.
And perhaps most importantly, says Wyllie, “talk to cops, talk to police officers, ask them what the job is about.”

Find Out If You Meet The Requirements
The state holds a civil service exam every two years to become an officer. Contact civil service directly regarding the exam schedule, availability, and registration.
To become a police officer, you need to first take a written test. You also need to meet these requirements:
- You must have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s license.
- You must be at least 19 years of age and no more than 39 years of age on the date of the examination. *
- You need to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. You can also satisfy this requirement with three years of military service and an honorable discharge.
- You must be a Boston resident at least one year before the date of your exam.
* You can take the written exam when you turn 19, but you wont be considered for a position until you turn 21.
Are you a veteran recognized by Civil Service, either on active duty or released from the military? You can add your service time to your age, up to four years, and still be eligible for appointment as an officer.

First Aid and CPR Certification
Police officers are often required to help in emergency situations, which may require them to perform life-saving first aid procedures. With this kind of certification, a police officer will know how to address minor injuries and administer CPR. This certification can be earned before, during or after the police academy.
K-9 Unit Certification
This certification is necessary for officers who work with police dogs on patrol and special cases. They complete specialized training that involves bonding, learning commands and running drills with a police dog.

Register To Take The Civil Service Exam

The fee for the exam is $100. You can pay on the states website with a credit or debit card.
The exam fee may be waived for candidates receiving certain state or federal public aid, or unemployment insurance. You can find the fee waiver form on the state’s website.

On August 13, the Government of Canada announced its intent to require vaccination across the federal public service.
Under the new policy, all employees in the Core Public Administration will be required to confirm their vaccination status. This includes all members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and cadets.
To attend the Cadet Training Program at the RCMP Training Academy, Depot, you must complete an attestation form.
Subject to Provincial guidelines set in place by the local public health authorities, applicants may be required to show proof of vaccination in order to enter facilities where the RCMP Entrance Exam is administered.

What About Basic Training
Completing a basic police academy prior to your hiring is dependent on the agency you apply to. Some will only hire upon completion of the academy others hire you and then send you through the academy afterward. Check with the agency youre applying to for further information.

What Is The Hiring Process
There are some barriers to employment in public safety that do not apply to most ordinary careers. You should be aware that the application, selection and appointment process may take four to six months to complete, and in some circumstances, up to a year.
After a relatively simple initial application process, a promising candidate must successfully complete the following:
1. Take a written test.
2. Pass a physical agility test.
3. Sit for an oral board interview.
4. Pass a background evaluation.
The pre-employment background check will look at a number of things, including criminal record, credit history, military record, current and previous employment history and references.
While there are certain infractions that automatically disqualify candidates, including all felony convictions as well as misdemeanors that prohibit the possession of a firearm, such as those involving domestic violence, agencies may be willing to work with you if you’ve demonstrated a clean record in the years leading up to your application.
