All Peace Officer candidates must undergo a thorough background investigation which includes a drug test. When directed by the academy staff, Pre-Service Candidates should contact Professional Screening and Information . The current cost for the PSI background investigation for Pre-Service Candidates is $304.00 and is payable online. Contact your academy of choice to obtain the organization code and Chain of Custody form, when applicable, for the drug test. - Be a US citizen, by birth or naturalization, at the time of application.
- Must be 21 years old when appointed to officer.
- Possess a valid drivers license at the time of application.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
- Successful completion of a polygraph exam.
- Successful completion of a medical and psychological evaluation.
- Be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, or be approved by MPD for a religious or medical exemption.

Maximum Age Requirements For Law Enforcement Candidates
It may come as a surprise that most agencies do not a maximum age requirement for their candidates. It is also interesting that the reason some agencies have a maximum age limit does not have to do with a candidates ability to pass the physical ability test but rather they want to make certain that a newly hired candidate can retire with full benefits. An agency may have a maximum age for someone starting out because that is the latest someone could start with their agency and still retire with full benefits when they reach the threshold for mandatory retirement in that agency.
For states that do have a maximum age limit, the age at which you can start your law enforcement career, It is generally around 34-37 years of age.
Exceptions are made for military veterans. In the New York Police Department, for example, the maximum age to sit the initial exam is 35. If you have had active military service, you can deduct six years from that age or in other words you can apply for the job at the age of 41.

Minimum Age Requirements To Take Police Officer And Firefighter Exams
No person shall be eligible to take an examination for original appointment to the position of firefighter or police officer in a city or town if the applicant will not have reached 19 years of age on or before the final date for the filing of applications for the examination, as so stated provided, however, that an applicant who reached 19 years of age while serving on active military duty, who was not 19 on or before the date of an original examination, shall be eligible for any subsequent make up examination that is offered.
No person shall be eligible for original appointment to the position of police officer in a city or town until that person has reached the age of 21.
North Carolina Sheriff Deputy Requirements
North Carolina has 100 counties. The three most populous counties are Mecklenburg, Wake, and Guilford the county seats are Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro, respectively. Requirements for sheriffs deputies and other law enforcement positions reporting to sheriffs offices in the state are set by the Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission.
Although individual sheriffs offices may set a higher bar, the Commission provides minimum state requirements for all candidates. The Commission states that prospective sheriffs deputies must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Be a US citizen
- Possess or be eligible for a valid North Carolina drivers license
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Pass a drug test
- Have no felony charges or convictions
Once hired, sheriffs deputies will be on probation for a period of 12 months, during which time they must complete at least 616 hours of training and instruction in a qualified Basic Law Enforcement Training course.3

How Long Is The Training Process Before I’m On Patrol
ENTRY-LEVEL
The Basic Law Enforcement Academy is approximately 4.5-months . Recruits are NOT housed at the academy and will be responsible for their own housing.
Upon graduation from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy you will become a Student Officer. You will spend approximately 4 weeks at the Seattle Police Department Advanced Training Unit in Post-BLEA. You will learn the laws specific to the City of Seattle, department policy and procedures and services specific to Seattle.
After completing advanced training, you will enter the Field Training Program, with an experienced officer who will evaluate your performance in the patrol division.
LATERAL-ENTRY
All certified law enforcement officers from outside of the State of Washington must take and pass the 2 week Police Officer Equivalency Academy administered by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
While attending the equivalency academy, you will also learn Seattle Municipal Laws, policies, procedures, and services specific to Seattle. This will be followed by Field Training for Lateral Officers.
