How Important Is Accreditation

Accreditation refers to an outside organization reviewing a particular school or program to ensure it meets certain standards of quality. Accreditation is important for police training programs because it serves as a mark of quality graduates who complete their education and training can be confident that what they have earned will be accepted by future employers and peers. The specific entities that offer accreditation will vary depending on the program. For instance, many associate or bachelors degree programs will not be accredited at the program level, but the school offering the degree will be accredited. This will usually be a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the US Department of Education.

As for the accreditation of police training academies, the most prominent is the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, or CALEA.

General Information On How To Become A Law Enforcement Officer

The following information outlines the process by which a candidate may become licensed as a law enforcement officer in the state of Michigan.

Licensing as a law enforcement officer in Michigan must be approved through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards . This happens when the following two requirements are met by the candidate: compliance with MCOLES minimum selection standards which includes satisfactory completion of a basic police academy or recognition of prior training and experience, and employment with a law enforcement agency as a law enforcement officer. Previously licensed police officers in Michigan, or from another state, who are seeking re-licensure are directed to the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.

Basic recruit training, which is the major component of the pre-employment standards, must be completed at an approved training academy. Regional training academies are located throughout the state. All training academies are required to teach, as a minimum, the state’s basic training curriculum, which is 594 hours in length. At the completion of the academy, all graduates are required to pass a licensing examination administered by the state.

There are three ways to enter a basic training academy:

Once all of the pre-enrollment standards have been met, including basic training, a candidate’s license may be activated through MCOLES by being sworn in as a law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency.

Other Requirements For Police Officers

Many police departments require recruits to live in the jurisdiction. While some departments allow new hires time to move to the area, others require residency at the time of application. Also, many departments require police officers to have completed some college credits. If you didnt attend college, upgrade your education or select a jurisdiction that only requires a GED equivalency. Some departments waive education requirements if you served in the military or will consider your previous work experience.

Training Civilians Before Employment

Traditionally, recruits are hired by a law enforcement agency, then sent to a police academy for training. Civilians now have the ability to receive the same training as sworn police officers prior to service and agencies will have the opportunity to hire academy trained individuals ready for service.

The basic training program

  • Intensive academic and physical training.
  • Instructors are employed in the field of law enforcement.
  • Courses include all aspects of entry-level law enforcement including legal issues, citizen interaction, communications, investigation and state-of-the-art firearms training and defensive tactics.

Available only at SWIC

The Intern application process has currently been approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board only at Southwestern Illinois Police Academy.

How To Prepare For The Police Academy

The course syllabus is extensive. To get through it successfully, candidates must be prepared. Here are some ways you can navigate through the course with success.

First keep fit. Yes, you may have succeeded in the police officer exam, but your physical strength and endurance are now going to be tested much further. Go to the gym, build strength and cardiovascular capacity to maximize your endurance on the field. You should do strength-based exercises at least three-times weekly, and cardiovascular exercises daily. However, you may tweak this recommendation based on your own activity / inactivity levels.

Second, build teamwork skills. No police officer goes it alone. To succeed at both the police academy and in your future career as a police officer, you must be able to build and maintain personal relationships and this includes working effectively within teams. Sometimes this can be difficult, particularly if its not something you like or are used to. But it is something that you need to work on and its better to start now rather than trying to resolve it when things are too late.

Although police officers are often portrayed gorging on donuts, academy physical training is no cakewalk. To be hired by police departments, candidates must pass physical fitness exams. But that’s the easy part. Once they enter police academies, the uphill fitness challenge begins.

California, for instance, recommends a regimen of 80 push-ups and 250 crunches a day to get up to snuff. The New York Police Department Police Academy estimates that two-thirds of its recruits cannot pass the final physical fitness test when they first enter the academy . For that reason, recruits take a fitness assessment at the beginning of the training and condition accordingly with regular running, weight training and other exercises. In Vermont, law enforcement hopefuls between the ages of 20 and 29 must meet these criteria:

  • Bench press: 99 percent of body weight
  • Sit-ups: 38 per minute
  • Bench press: 59 percent of body weight
  • Sit-ups: 32 per minute
  • Push-ups: 15 per minute

As recruits build their strength, they must also learn how to properly use it. Restraining and handcuffing people involves muscle, as well as specific movements, to disable people without hurting them. To prepare them for taming criminals, recruits learn and practice self-defense tactics, along with ways to use other non-lethal tools, such as batons and pepper spray.

Now that the recruits are physically prepped to join the force, let’s find out how they train their brains.

  • Academics: 230 hours

How Does Police Academy Training Work

No matter which program you choose, before beginning work at a police department, you will have to enter a police academy for formal training. This training will consist of various elements that prepare you for life as a police officer, including training it the classroom, field training that walks you through the rigors of the day-to-day work, and in-service training that allows you to begin working with the public on a probationary basis. Heres more about police academy training:

Classroom education

The classroom curriculum will focus on a variety of subjects, ranging from the law itself to administrative and department procedures. Cadets will also learn not just what the law is, but how to apply it in the real world. For example, a police officer may know that probable cause is required for a warrant to conduct a search, but what about the exceptions where a warrant isnt needed? Or what should the officer do or say if an individual contests the validity of the warrant? Much of this classroom training will be necessary before field training can take place or to put the hands-on skills into context.
