Other police departments delegate specific law enforcement officers to mental health calls and involve mental health professionals whenever necessary. One of the oldest programs in the United States is the CAHOOTS public safety system in Eugene, Oregon, started in 1989, a model that many police departments and cities have looked to for guidance in developing their own programs. When a call involving a mental health crisis come s in to the CAHOOTS non-emergency line, responders send a medic and a trained mental health crisis worker if the call involves violence or medical emergencies, they involve law enforcement. In 2019, out of 24,000 CAHOOTS calls, mobile teams only requested police backup 150 times. The city estimates that CAHOOTS saves taxpayers an average of $8.5 million per year by handling crisis calls that would otherwise fall to police.

The team members use trauma-informed, harm-reduction techniques to de-escalate crises and, if necessary, transport clients to outpatient care, reducing unnecessary emergency room visits and jail time.

The San Antonio Police Department has an internal mental health unit with an assigned sergeant, two detectives, 10 patrol officers, and three civilian clinicians who are masters-level professional counselors. One counselor in the unit specializes in drug and alcohol treatment.

Research Design And Setting

The research presented here used qualitative interviews to explore the ways in which police officers made assessments of mental illnesses during encounters. Law Enforcement Resistance To Seeking Help

Among law enforcement, theres strong resistance to seeking help. Police officers with mental illness, especially, dont want to voluntarily ask for assistance. Why? According to the Ruderman Family Foundation study, police officers cited the following reasons for why theyre reluctant to seek help:

    As someone with a mental health disorder, its important to remember your rights. It may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the standard hiring procedures in your state to ensure your application is being fairly considered.

    If moving to another state to pursue a career in law enforcement is a viable option for you, consider educating yourself on the state-by-state laws. Its possible your neighboring state has much more flexible policies than where youre currently situated.

    What Happens If You Fail

    Rather than thinking in terms of passing or failing, ask yourself whether you should be working in law enforcement. It doesn’t mean that you’re a bad person if you “fail” the psych exam. It just means that you might not be suited to this particular job. Ask yourself if a career as a police officer is really what you want to do with your life.

    Try to find out exactly what issues caused the psychologist to consider you to be high risk or unacceptable. Consider how to correct those traits.

    You’ll probably have to sit out of the hiring process for a year or longer before you can apply to the same agency again.

    In the event that you don’t make it through, it’s better to find out the job isn’t right for you now rather than later when it could present a danger to yourself or others.

    Know The Risk Factors

    Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. They can’t cause or predict a suicide attempt, but they’re important to be aware of:

    • Mental disorders, particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and certain personality disorders
    • Alcohol and other substance use disorders
    • History of trauma or abuse
    • Major physical illnesses
    • Easy access to lethal means
    • Local clusters of suicide
    • Lack of social support and sense of isolation

    • Lack of healthcare, especially mental health and substance abuse treatment
    • Cultural and religious beliefs, such as the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma
    • Exposure to others who have died by suicide

    What You Should You Expect

    When you arrive at the psychologist’s office, the first thing you’ll probably notice is the crowd. Several candidates are often evaluated at one time, although your interview should be private. You’ll be asked to sign a consent to undergo the process.

    You’ll probably be given an initial questionnaire that will ask you a series of questions about your personal history. Past drug use, what you consider to be your personal strengths and weaknesses, past employment, education, and personal background are all likely to be inquired about.

    You’ll be presented with a series of multiple-choice personality assessments after the initial survey. These assessments will likely include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory . Plan to spend several hours completing these surveys, which will often be comprised of statements with which you’ll be asked to strongly agree, agree, gauge as neutral, disagree, or strongly disagree.

    You’ll probably encounter the same or similar questions multiple times during the personality assessment phase. This is by design. It helps evaluate your consistency and honesty.

I have always felt obligated to help people, and even though I am not a police officer, I have helped them. I have survived something that most people never have. There is no shame in me.

    Psychological screening is just one more tool that many police agencies use to ensure that they hire the best candidates for the job. It’s part of a multi-faceted hiring process that can include a basic abilities test, a thorough background investigation, a credit check, a polygraph exam, physical abilities testing, and medical screening.

    The primary goal of the exam is to ensure that you have the psychological fortitude to handle the unique demands of police work.

    The exam is actually a battery of tests that includes several components. Typically, the exam starts with a pretest self-interview or evaluation. Next comes a series of multiple-choice tests or surveys. Finally, there will usually be a sit-down interview with a psychologist with experience in public safety issues.

    The evaluation takes the totality of all these components into account to help the psychologist render a final opinion as to the applicant’s suitability for the law enforcement profession. That determination is usually expressed in one of two ways:
