What To Expect On Your First Day Of Police Academy
Whether youre a young student fresh from college or a more mature recruit looking for a change of career, the first day of police academy is going to be a shock to the system. Passing the police officer exam was tough. But things are about to get much tougher.
Weve put together a brief guide on what to expect when you arrive at the academy, and some valuable tips for making your first day a little more bearable!
How To Prepare For The Police Academy In 2021
Let’s get this straight from the start. Every police academy is different. The standards one agency has may be completely different than the standards of another agency of an agency city or town.
The first step in preparing for the Academy is to reach out to the agency you are interested in joining and learning from them first hand what to expect.
Find an officer that is fresh out of the academy and ask them all the questions you have.
Common questions to ask include:
- What is the typical day look like in the Academy? What about a week?
- What does the PT look like?
- How many days were you running?
- Did you do any strength training?
- Did you get any breaks throughout the day?
- What does education look like?
- How much time did you spend time outside the Academy preparing or studying?
- Is there anything that you wish you knew before starting the Academy?
- Is there any advice you can give me before I start?
It is best to do research about the requirements of the Academy well before the Academy starts.
We recommend starting your training for the Academy at least 12 weeks out.
The more information you know about the Academy, the better you will be able to structure your fitness training leading up to the start.
Almost all Academies will have a PT test standard. Many require the recruits to pass the PT test before the Academy starts, while some require the recruits must pass the test at the end of the Academy.
Again, research and ask the agency beforehand.

How To Succeed During Police Academy Training
Achieving success during police academy requires a high level of discipline, determination, and focus.
Some basic tips for success when going through academy training include:
- Get into really good shape
- Clear your personal and professional schedule
- Study and stay on top of your classwork
- Practice your skills outside of training time
- Exercise good time management
- Build relationships with fellow candidates
- Find ways to reduce stress
- Get plenty of sleep
Following these tips will go a long way in the academy and help you turn your goal of becoming a police officer into reality.
Improving Body Strength Though Push
Push-ups are another part of the police fitness test. The HPD test requires 25 continuous pushups. In order for a push-up to count during the test, the candidate must use proper form and the chest must briefly touch the floor.
To foster proper form for push-ups, arms should be held close to the body and core stomach muscles should be tightened. There are many different types of push-ups that increase arm and chest strength:
Incline push-ups performed by placing your hands on a stable platform higher than the ground. Start with leaning on a wall, bed, or sturdy table and work your way down to a surface about 6 inches off the ground.
- Wide inclined push-ups performed by holding the hands in a wider position than shoulder width.
- Weighted push-ups performed by wearing a weighted vest.
- Wide push-ups performed by placing the hands outside shoulder width during each push-up.
- Diamond push-ups performed by placing the hands on the floor to form a diamond between the index fingers and thumbs during each push-up.
All of these push-up exercises strengthen the upper and lower body, especially the chest area. They also strengthen core muscles.
Candidates should start by doing 100 push-ups a day. I recommend that you start with finding the maximum number of push-ups you can do at one time. Over time, start to increase the number each day until you can do 25-30 push-ups at one time and repeat the exercise over time until you have accomplished 100 push-ups a day.

Police Academy Fitness Preparation
Preparing for a police academy fitness test should follow a training program that mirrors what the test will involve. This doesnt mean you can start attempting to simulate that test on your first try to see how you do.
You might need to build general strength, stamina and endurance before you try to perform exercises at full speed. Before you start any fitness program, talk to a doctor who can help you determine at what maximum and target heart rates you can exercise safely.

What Is The Police Written Exam
The written portion of the police testing process is meant to determine if the applicant possesses the foundational skills necessary to perform the work of a police officer. The police academy will provide training in search and seizure, probable cause, and reasonable suspicion. However, there is not enough time in the academy to teach basic skills such as math, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension. It is expected that applicants bring these basic skills with them. A police officer who has such poor spelling that they cannot write a legible police report will find it difficult to do the job. Therefore, a police department says come to us with basic skills and we will teach you the rest.
Police written tests are not unlike college entrance exams such as an ACT or SAT. In general, police written exams cover reading comprehension, spelling, math, grammar, and analytical skills. The written test can also include a report writing test. Generally, a passing score is 70% or better. A higher result will place you better in the following stages of the selection criteria. Therefore, it is advisable to invest some time and money in your proper preparation. Many departments have a study guide that can be beneficial as a starting point. Below, you will find more ideas on how to prepare. We put together a free Mini-Course to help you Pass the Police Exam.

Day : Muscular Endurance Training
On this day focus on strength training by pushing your muscles harder. Muscular endurance is the ability for a muscle to do continuous work over a prolonged period of time. This combination of endurance and strength training is essential to overcoming fatigue in any fitness routine, according to Sports Fitness Advisor.
Aim for several sets and repetitions for muscular endurance training. Try doing sets of leg presses, calf raises, shoulder presses and bicep curls of about 15 to 20 repetitions for muscular endurance beginners. As you build strength, push yourself to do more sets and repetitions to keep your muscles engaged for longer periods of time. You can also do dumbbell lunges, medicine ball throws, back extensions, curls or dead lifts, Sports Fitness Advisor suggests.
Police Academy Fitness Test
Youve made the decision and went through the process to become a police officer. You have been selected and have been given a conditional offer of employment. In the offer you are required to pass the background investigation, pass a Physical Ability Test and finally complete a police academy. Here is an example of what to expect before the Police Academy Fitness Test.
You think to yourself, am I ready? Am I in great physical shape to pass the PAT and the police academy?
I have been a police officer for over 10 years, a detective, on a SWAT team and a Field Training Officer . I graduated the police academy in 2007 and it was physically demanding. It was a good thing I kept myself in peak physical condition because at the academy, they did not have time for those who werent in shape. One of the instructors yelled at us, YOU COME HERE IN SHAPE, WE DO NOT HOLD HANDS AND YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU DONT MAKE THE STANDARDS.
I am going to give you some pointers on how to prepare for the PAT and academy. Most physical fitness tests arent a secret. The standards are available online so it is up to you to prepare for them.
