Now that you know what options there are for becoming a police officer, its important to know where they are offered. There are many schools that exist to help you move into the law enforcement career of your choice. Here are the options:

Vocational/trade schools

These post-high school institutions focus their programs and curriculums on skill-oriented or hands-on training. This training can come in the form of what effectively amounts to an in-house police academy. Vocational and trade schools can provide the fastest way to obtain the training necessary to become a police officer and allow students to receive police academy training without attending the official police academy. Its also fairly affordable compared to earning a college degree. Keep in mind that graduation doesnt guarantee a job in law enforcement and may not result in an academic credential that provides opportunities for professional advancement.

Community colleges

Military

How To Become An Ontario Provincial Police Officer

Victoria Police employees are required to project an image that is consistent with a professional and disciplined law enforcement agency. Therefore employees clothing, grooming and personal accessories must project a favourable image, and must not be extreme or detract from the need to present as employees of a professional and disciplined organisation.

Applicants with tattoos/body art on the head, face, neck or hands should contact Recruiting Services Branch for further information regarding eligibility, prior to submitting an application.

Members are permitted to wear the following items of jewellery: wrist watches, minimal rings of conservative style and emergency medical alert bracelets or pendants. Wearing of other jewellery, ornaments, adornments or accessories is not permitted. This includes: earrings, spacers, any facial/body piercing, plugs, tunnels, bars, chains, dental grills, etc.

What Is The Employment Process

From there, the employment process to become a police officer in California is:

  • Submit an application.
  • You must pass a number of background checks that may include a polygraph. “Past behavior will be closely scrutinized,” reads the LAPD recruitment website, “and only candidates with the highest probability of success will be appointed as Police Officers.”
  • Undergo a medical exam.
  • Some counties also require a Personal Qualifications Essay . In Los Angeles, a score of over 70 is required to be added to a list of qualified candidates. You may re-take this test again in 6 months if you dont get a high enough score.

You’ll first need to check that you meet the minimum eligibility requirements. These vary between police forces, but in general you should:

  • be aged 18 or over
  • be a British citizen, a European Community /European Economic Area citizen, or a foreign national with indefinite leave to remain in the UK without restrictions
  • have lived in the UK for the last three years
  • possess a qualification equivalent to A-level, have been a special constable who has been signed off for independent patrol service in the last two years or have served as a police community support officer for 18 months.

You may not be accepted if you have certain criminal convictions, debt problems, or tattoos that could be deemed offensive. Members of certain extreme political groups are not allowed to apply. A valid driving licence is often essential, and you’ll also have to pass medical, eyesight and fitness tests.

You can’t apply if you’ve made an unsuccessful application to a police force in the last six months.

A Police Recruit would make a monthly salary of $5,044. Once he/she becomes an officer, the first salary they get as a Sworn Officer would be $81,444 annual.
