What Are The Requirements For Becoming A Police Officer In New Jersey
The individual must:
- Possess a valid and current drivers license.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- Meet the following education requirement:
- The candidate must have a bachelors degree from an accredited university or college. OR
- The candidate must have 80 college credits from an accredited university or college and must have earned a Bachelors degree to enter the selection process. OR
- The applicant must have earned 60 college credits or have earned an associates degree from an accredited university or college, AND should have completed a minimum of two years of military/employment experience.
- The candidate must have earned 30 college credits from an accredited university or college AND should have completed a minimum of two years of active duty military service.
Winnipeg Police Service Physical Abilities Test
The WPS-PAT is conducted in a gymnasium with the applicant wearing clothing appropriate for physical activity and consists of:
- Running 400 metres over a six lap course. This includes climbing up and down stairs, jumping over low obstacles.
- Following the six laps the applicant moves to the push/pull station where they will pull and push against 80 lbs of resistance while moving in a controlled half circle. Two controlled falls to the chest are completed after each group of three pulls or three pushes. This sequence is repeated twice.
- Following the push/pull station the applicant completes the test by lifting and carrying 80 lbs a distance of 50 feet.
- The WPS-PAT test must be completed within 4 minutes and 15 seconds.
Note: A WPS-PAT certificate in not required to apply, is valid for one year and must be completed prior to the panel interview
Applicants selected to proceed to the P.A.T. will be notified by email.

The Application Process For Police Officer Candidates
It isnt easy becoming a police officer. Potential candidates need to go through a stringent application process designed to weed out those who dont have what it takes to become outstanding police officers.
Police officers help maintain peace and order and ensure that members of the community stay safe. This job comes with immense responsibility. The application process itself is not for everyone.
Canadian police agencies generally follow the same process which involves a series of tests, checks and interviews, including:
- A written exam
- A polygraph exam
- A background investigation
