5 Ways People Fail the Police Academy

Accident Reports, Incidents, and Crime Reports: can be obtained from the Records Bureau as soon as they become available. You may request the report in person, but reports take time to prepare and we strongly recommend that you call ahead for a copy of a report so that we can have it available to you when you come in. If the report you are interested in obtaining is for insurance purposes or for a lawyer, you may prefer to have them request the report for you.

Accident Reports:

You may obtain a copy of an official Accident Report that the officer completed if you were an operator of one of the vehicles in the accident, or the owner of a vehicle involved in the accident, or an injured party, or an insurance company requesting on behalf of their clients, or attorneys representing clients in a civil action. Accident Reports are obtained from the NH Department of Safety Division of Motor Vehicles by completing Form DSMV 505. For any assistance, please contact the Division of Motor Vehicles at 227-4040.

Incidents:

An incident sheet is a very brief description of calls that officers respond to. An incident sheet is typically one page of information that includes the date and time of an incident, the location, and the name of officer who responded to the scene. There is a $1 processing charge for the copy of an incident page.

  • Those with permissible purpose can access your Equifax credit report to help them make certain types of decisions about you

  • You must provide consent for lenders and creditors or employers to access your Equifax credit report

  • You can see which companies have accessed your Equifax credit report

Financial institutions, other lenders, and companies with what’s called “permissible purpose” can access your Equifax credit report to help in making certain types of decisions about you.

For example, when you apply for a loan or credit card, a lender may use the information in your Equifax credit report to help determine whether to lend you money and at what terms.

No one can access your Equifax credit report unless they have a permissible purpose.

What is permissible purpose?

Under the law, permissible purposes are the purposes established by law for which someone is permitted to access your Equifax credit report.

Your Equifax credit report can only be accessed for specific reasons. Some examples:

  • Lenders and creditors you are applying for credit with
  • Existing creditors you have a relationship with, to review an existing account to determine whether you continue to meet the account terms
  • Debt collection companies, to use in collecting payment
  • Insurance companies, to underwrite insurance involving you
  • Employers or prospective employers, to offer you a job or promotion
  • Rental companies/landlords, phone and utility companies, to provide a service

Reporting To The Police

If you wish, you can also report debit card fraud to your local police department. Depending on local policies, the department may ask you to come to a police station or may send an officer to meet with you. Either way, you should try to have your identification with you, as well as any evidence you might have of the fraud, such as printouts of online transaction reports or paper bank statements.

Depending on the amount stolen, your knowledge of who made the unauthorized charges and other factors, the police may or may not prioritize investigating the crime. But you can always get a police report, which may be useful documentation for the future.

Review Of The Report By The Prosecutor

The written report is sent to the prosecutor, who must then decide if more investigation is necessary or if enough evidence exists to authorize prosecution based on probable cause that a crime has occurred. The evidence must also support that the person cited in the report committed the crime.

The American Bar Association notes that this should not be confused with proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, which is a heavier burden to meet and is required for conviction at trial.

Understanding Basic Car Insurance Types For Claims

Hit and Run Drivers: NYPD police report = How incompetent ...

After a car accident, its a good idea to read your auto insurance policy. This will help refresh your memory on what coverage you have. Your insurance agent may have already told you what you are and arent entitled to, but check for yourself. This is when having a reputable insurer with a good reputation will pay off.

Every car insurance company offers the same basic coverage types. The required ones vary by state and the rest are optional and some optional coverage types are a wise buy.

Liability is the most basic coverage for all vehicles. You must have this in case youre guilty of hitting a person, car, or even running over a garden gnome in someones yard. Liability insurance pays for a victims claims for damages such as medical expenses, property damage, lost wages and pain and suffering.

Almost every state requires minimal liability coverage, but amounts vary. California, for example, requires only $15,000 in injury coverage for one person in an accident. That amount may prove to be woefully inadequate with medical costs and todays litigious society.

You can be sued for amounts that exceed your auto insurance. For those with assets and savings, a high amount of auto insurance is a way to protect what youve worked for.

Liability insurance also pays for your legal defense if youre sued over something covered by your policy, like a car accident.

When The Police Arrive

Depending on the circumstances, the police may come to the crime scene or you may go to the police station to report the crime. When the police respond to an emergency they will take steps to protect anyone in danger. The police will look for evidence and preserve evidence.

Depending on the situation this may mean that you do not have access to the crime scene for a period of time. This may mean that you cannot use property, like a car or your home, for a period of time. If a death is involved it can also mean that the victim’s body cannot be removed until all the necessary evidence has been collected.

The police may take property into custody, dust for fingerprints or take you for medical attention. In most communities, the police can call Victim Services in to assist you if you wish, or they can tell you how to contact the nearest Victim Services program at a later time.

File A Restraining Order

Police Chaplain Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer

If you’re in an emergency situation, call 911.

If you’ve been a victim of domestic abuse and want to take legal action, you may be able to file for a protective order. Protective orders are also known as restraining orders or injunctions.

The process for obtaining a protective order differs from state-to-state. Your local police and court can help you get the process started. Contact your state, county, or municipal court for more information.

Generally, you have to fill out paperwork and submit it to the county courthouse. If you need protection right away, a judge may issue a temporary restraining order. To get a longer-term order, your judge may require a full court hearing and/or your abuser’s presence.

A protective order can be enforced by police. If necessary, the order can include special provisions like:

  • Custody of children

  • Forcing the abuser to leave a home

In some states, a protective order requires the abuser to surrender all firearms.

What Is A Police Report

Can You Be Arrested with a Warrant for Someone Else?

People file a police report with law enforcement for a wide variety of reasons such as domestic disputes, traffic accidents, burglaries, and home invasions, fraud, theft, stalking, violence, and many other reasons. To file a report, citizens usually begin by calling 911, or their local police departments non-emergency line, to report the incident.

Once a citizen reports an incident, dispatchers assign it to local officers in the area. The police officers travel to the appropriate location via car, motorcycle, or other police vehicles. Then, the officers evaluate the situation, make observations, interview witnesses, record data, and complete forms and reports required by their local police department.

Police officers also initiate the filing of a report to record the data and gather the details associated with criminal and civil incidents such as car accidents, burglaries, assaults, and robberies, just to name a few.

Officers gather and record a great deal of information and data on a police report. This is to help ensure thorough and accurate investigations and to support criminal proceedings if they become necessary. Also, background verification services may use them in background checks. The information contained in the typical police report may vary from county to county, but most capture very similar information.

    Third Parties Obtaining Reports

Sometimes third parties who were not involved in the actions mentioned in police reports might want copies of them. In these instances, most states will only allow third parties to obtain copies of police reports if the matters enclosed within the reports have already been closed. However, some states may allow third parties to obtain copies of police reports even when the cases are pending. Generally, third parties must know the case number of the reports that they want and must go to the county clerks office where the police report was filed to obtain a copy of the reports. There is usually a fee for the reports to be printed as well.

The process of obtaining copies of police reports is slightly different for different groups of people. However, they typically are not difficult to obtain, no matter who wants them.
