What Does An Nypd Detective Do
You may think of detectives as specializing in certain crimes. Of course, this is common in large police departments such as NYPD but isnt always the case. Youll find detectives in NYPD who specialize in homicide or sex crimes, or property crimes.
On the other hand, smaller police departments dont have enough resources for specialization. Nevertheless, becoming a detective with the NYPD comes with a lot of duties and responsibilities, and not all of them are what you see on TV!
Heres a list of what the job generally requires from you:
- Gathering facts and collecting evidence for criminal trials
- Determining which pieces of information and people are credible
- Conducting interviews and interrogations
- Examining records and observing suspects
- Participating in arrests and raids
- Writing detailed reports on findings
- Testifying in courts during criminal trial proceedings.
Well, most of this is like what you see on the television, except for the paperwork. Lets face it, watching detectives write extensive reports wont really make for entertaining television!
Although most TV shows depict detectives as working alone or in teams of two, the reality is that detectives have to work closely with other police officers as well as technical staff, including crime scene investigators and evidence technicians, to build a strong case.
To clear up another misconception, the work doesnt end once theyve solved the case!

What Is A Police Chaplain
A police chaplain is a chaplain who serves in a precinct and works primarily with police officers to provide support and counseling. A chaplain is a little different from a traditional minister in that chaplains primarily work in secular areaspolice departments, hospitals, military bases, prisons, etc. While chaplains, including police chaplains, are fully ordained and can lead a church, they are generally called ministers, pastors, or some other term in that case.
Police chaplains work in conjunction with police departments, sheriff departments, and other law enforcement groups to provide counseling, support, and other services to law enforcement personnel. This does mean talking with officers who have gone through traumatic experiences, but it also means visiting those who are injured, speaking to the family of an officer who died in the line of duty, and giving prayers at certain events. In most cases, a police chaplain offers religious counseling in addition to the ministers of an officers church. They dont usually hold church services for the precinct or police station.

Nypd Police Test Preparation
Remember what we discussed at the beginning of this article the need to over-perform on the NYPD exam.
As the largest police department in the United States, as well as one of the best paying, competition for places within the police academy is high. Not all candidates who pass all phases of the exam will make it through to the academy. Only the best candidates can expect to be selected.
To increase the probability of getting selected, candidates should score as high as possible on the NYPD exam and not just pass. If you are one of those candidates who just hopes to make it through by a whisker, you are the most likely person not to be chosen.
This situation is avoidable if you sit down and practice NYPD test prep. The more practice you put in, for all phases of the exam, the more you incrementally improve the odds of being chosen by the department. Given that competition is extremely high, this is the kind of effort that must be put in if you are to stand any serious chance of becoming a law enforcement officer for New York Police Department.

Nyc Police Officer Shot While Resting In Car Between Shifts
NEW YORK A New York City police officer’s skull was broken when he was shot Saturday while sleeping in his personal vehicle between shifts, but he is expected to fully recover, the city’s new police commissioner said, calling the officer lucky.
Commissioner Keechant Sewell, sworn in just hours earlier, told a news conference that the officer has a fractured skull and had undergone surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian hospital, where a doctor said the bullet missed vital structures in his head by millimeters after entering his temple. Bullet fragments were removed from his wound, the doctor said.
We are lucky, fortunate and grateful on this New Years Day, Sewell said.
Sewell said the shooting occurred around 6:15 a.m. in the parking lot of a precinct house in East Harlem when the officer was awakened by the sound of glass shattering in his car and felt pain in the left side of his head.
The officer left the vehicle and was aided by a sergeant who saw blood coming from his head before an ambulance took him to the hospital, Sewell said.

Potential Disqualifiers For A Policing Career In Canada

Language Disqualifier: You need to be fluent in either English or French including being able to speak, read, and understand one of these languages.
Physical Disqualifier: You cannot be in poor physical condition. Failure to successfully complete the physical examination in the minimum time frame is an automatic disqualification.

Psychological Disqualifiers: A candidate can be disqualified if they do not meet the minimum psychological examination requirements.

Police Chaplain Duties And Qualities
A police chaplain is a specially trained chaplain who works mainly with law enforcement personnel. If youre going to be a police chaplain, you will have to fulfill all of the religious and educational requirements to be a full-fledged minister in your church. This means you could, if you later wanted to, lead a church congregation. You will, as an ordained person, have the authority to marry people and provide other types of rites. However, a police chaplain is more or less a minister without a church, so you may not often be called upon to perform these duties.
In some cases, especially in smaller precincts, the police chaplain is an unpaid position. A minister from a nearby church may volunteer to visit the station a few times a week to talk with the officers, or police officers may know to seek out the minister in times of need. However, generally these chaplains do go through an application process because not every minister is cut out to be a police chaplain.
Thats because police chaplains have to have more than just a deep faith and a calling to the ministry. Working with officers requires a greater understanding of loss and what it means for someone to be going through a period of intense grief. Officers may confront death on a regular basis, and very few go through their entire careers without being put in a threatening position. As their chaplain, you have to know how to approach these situations and help the officers through them.
