You should walk away from the company if, during the hiring process, they ask you about your:

  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation

Even if the hiring and onboarding process goes smoothly, you might still become a victim of workplace bullying over time. If thats the case, study the companys policy on workplace harassment and talk to the HR department. If youve exhausted all options but the harassment persists, speak to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

What Are Some Tips To Prevent Internet Harassment

While every situation is different, in general, steps to help prevent cyberbullying can include:

    In the workplace:

    • Use a gender neutral e-mail address if you have a choice.
    • Make your e-mail password at least twelve characters long although longer passwords may be appropriate. Make sure that it is a combination of capital and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. The best passwords don’t spell anything and don’t follow a logical pattern.
    • Change your password frequently.
    • Review the workplace’s policy about the use of e-mail signatures . It should provide enough information about the person so that they can be identified, but not so much that they are providing e-mail recipients with personal information.
    • Use encryption, privacy settings, software, or other technological tools to increase the security provided to e-mails and internet use.
    • Follow guidelines from your organization’s Internet technology specialist as there will be additional requirements regarding privacy settings, and safety from computer viruses, malicious software, etc.
    • Follow any policies or procedures your organization has in place for Internet communication. Discuss Internet privacy and safety with your organization’s Internet technology specialist.
    • Limit the information you share in your “out of office” message to the dates of your absence and who to contact. Don’t broadcast that you are on vacation or on work-related travel.
    • Do not leave your computer logged in and unattended.

Harassment & stalking : Northumbria Police

Choosing whether or not to report severe episodes of online harassment to law enforcement can be a difficult decision.

Because so many social media platforms offer anonymity, and because disgruntled users can so easily issue threats that they may have no intention of acting on, its a challenge to assess whether or not an online threat is real. Unfortunately, there is no exact formula for knowing when to turn to the police. You are the best person to judge whether or not your safety, or the safety of your loved ones, has been compromised. Communities and individuals, depending on their experiences and backgrounds, may have different relationships with the police. Not everyone will feel comfortable involving law enforcement, and, as discussed below, law enforcement officials are not always well-equipped to handle problems that arise online. We encourage you to use your own judgment.

    Major Forms Of Phone Harassment

Even though phone harassment comes it many forms, they all share a very common similarity which is that they rob you of your privacy and sense of security. Here are the most common forms of phone harassment.

    1. Blocked or No Caller ID Calls

Blocked or no caller ID phone calls are phone calls where it is not possible to view the incoming caller ID number. To place a blocked call from a landline or smartphone, all you need to do is dial *67 before the phone number you want to call. More often than not, someone that is calling you with no visible caller ID, and they do not want to reveal their identity, usually dont have your well-being in mind.

    2. Robocalls & Spam Calls

This is another very common form of phone harassment. Every month in the United States alone, about 3 billion unwanted spam and telemarketing calls flood consumers smartphones.

Spam calls, especially those that are illegal, are a form of phone harassment that pose a severe threat to the security of your personal and financial information. Phone scammers pose as the IRS, banks, and loan services and call you in attempts to steal from you over the phone.

Another tactic that is used for placing spam calls is known as neighbor spoofing. This is a form of harmful caller ID spoofing that allows spammers to place calls that look like they are coming from a phone number in your local area code. This way, people will be more likely to pick up the call because it looks familiar to them.

    Having Trouble Reporting Online Harassment

Sometimes, small police departments wont respond even, if you do receive specific threats of violence. The department will tell you there is nothing it can do until the person threatens you offline or comes to your house. In those cases your best bet is to get in touch with the state police as well as the FBI. In a non-emergency situation, you can file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Unfortunately, if you do not have any proof of a threat of violence, it will be all but impossible for the police to act.

    The Due Process Of Law

An example of a due process violation is when the police arbitrarily stop, detain, or demand information from a citizen when no crime is being committed, and with no apparent evidence that a crime may be committed. In these situations, if a citizen is stopped by police but not detained or arrested for a crime, they are not required to answer officer questions and are lawfully free to leave an interrogation.

Further, Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act made illegal use of public funds to discriminate based on race, color, and national origin. So, when an American citizen has been unlawfully stopped or detained by police whose salaries are paid by citizens tax dollars, its referred to as racial profiling and is a violation of Title VI.

This type of conduct by police also violates a citizens Constitutional due process rights and is considered harassment. In addition to the above types of conduct, police harassment includes illegal detention racial and ethnic profiling making racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks illegal surveillance and spying and illegal search and seizure of property.

All United States people, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, have rights should they be stopped or detained by police, that include the following protections by the U.S. Constitutions 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments:

S To Take After Reporting A Cyberbullying Attack

Police Harassment – Cops get owned, But Arrest Leads to Police Dept. Changes And Settlement – Re-Up

Collecting Evidence: Information To Investigate And Document

What to do if you need to call 999 but cant talk

Ask the complainant about, and query all relevant databases for, information on the suspect. Search under known aliases as well. Databases queried should include Canadian Police Information Centre , Canadian Firearms Registration Online ,Footnote 99 Special Interest Police , Firearms Interest Police , local and provincial information systems, and available probation information sources /Level II). Where applicable, immigration and refugee authorities may have relevant information. In some cases, consider contacting prison institutions for further information on the conduct of the suspect, or relevant information relating to the complainant. These queries should include searches for criminal records, prior contact with police and contact with police in communities where the suspect may have previously lived. If the criminal record indicates similar charges, determine the identity of the victims in those cases and the nature of their relationship with the accused.Footnote 100 These queries should cover the following:

Look For Signs Of A Crime

Obviously, there are times when calling the police is the best solution especially if there are weapons involved or if you witness a crime like a robbery, an assault, or another type of criminal behavior. Even seeing someone being threatened by another person is a reason to contact the police.

Trying to handle a situation like that on your own is never wise. Plus, for the safety of everyone involved, it’s best to allow the local police to handle it. You should never delay contacting the police when someone’s safety is at risk.

However, there are times when calling the police is not the best course of action. Not only does it tie up police with frivolous complaints, but it also can put people at risk when what they are doing is not harming other people, especially if they panic or don’t respond appropriately when the police arrive.

For instance, one womansometimes referred to at “Permit Patty”called the police on an 8-year-old Black girl selling water without a permit. Although it’s technically true that a permit was required to sell something on the street, this little girl was not harming anyone and involving the police tied up their time on something that wasn’t really putting anyone at risk.

If you find yourself in a situation where you see someone doing something that they probably shouldn’t be doing, you may want to brainstorm other ways to take action, especially if the person lives in your community.

What To Know Before Involving Law Enforcement

Involving law enforcement in online harassment can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially for writers who have never visited their local precinct or filed a police report. It can help to have a trusted loved one by your side if you end up going to your precinct in person, or if the police decide to send an officer to your home to take a statement. Whether you go to the police or they come to you, be aware that you may be asked to present documentation of your online harassment and/or to answer a series of interview questions with as much detail as possible.

Filing a police report does not always result in helpful action, unfortunately. There are various reasons for this. Sometimes a hateful online message falls within the realm of protected speech, and the law doesnt apply. Sometimes a local precinct has not been adequately trained to respond to cyberattacksan area of policing that continues to evolve. Sometimes the police officer handling your case may be unfamiliar with the online platforms where the harassment occurred. We do not share this information to disparage members of law enforcement, but rather to acknowledge that police response to online harassment still has a long way to go, and to alert you to certain realities you might encounter when turning to the police for help.

There is hope that as online harassment continues to gain recognition as a serious, well-documented phenomenon, law enforcement agencies will catch up.

    What Counts As Harassment

The legal definitions of harassment vary significantly across the country. The states understanding of harassment, menacing, and stalking is a mixed bag, so you should first check the statutes on these issues in your jurisdiction.

In most states, harassment charges are typically a misdemeanor, unless there are some aggravating circumstances that will elevate the charge. For instance, if youre being harassed based on your race, this will likely be treated as racial discrimination.

The fact that harassment is frequently classified as a misdemeanor doesnt mean it isnt serious. It is, and you should treat it as such.

To file a claim against your harasser, you will need to:

  • Prove that something was said or communicated to you that made you feel harassed. This could have happened in person, in a letter, over the phone, or online , etc.
  • Show that what was communicated was also intended to torment, scare, threaten, or embarrass you
  • If the harassment communication occurs continuously, regardless if its online or in-person, this could also count as stalking. If you think you may be the victim of a stalker, find out more about how to stop a stalker.
