What Is Training Like For Police In Ohio
Aspiring law enforcement officers who have passed their training and entrance examinations can apply for the police academy. Its required you enroll in an accredited Ohio Peace Training Academy program, which can last up to six months.
On average, candidates will have to complete a minimum of 579 hours of training. Also referred to as basic police academy training, it covers multiple topics and subjects.
The primary objective of any training program is to ensure that all graduates are as prepared as possible for their new roles. By combining academic and field training, youll have the necessary skills to be a well-rounded officer.

How The Case Started
The legal fight started in June 2020 at a Cincinnati City Council meeting where officer Olthaus made the OK symbol.
Olthaus said he meant OK when he flashed the hand signal but others viewed it as a dog whistle for white supremacy as the shape of the hand resembles the letter W and P for white power.
In August, Olthaus sued Terhas White, local writer Julie Niesen and others who accused him of racism. The suit states that his privacy was tortiously violated, that people disseminated personal information about him online, and that he was defamed.
People in the crowd made the juvenile, unfounded, incorrect and hysterical claim that innocuous okay gesture was a white power or white supremacist hand signal intended to intimidate people, the suit states.
Zach Gottesman, who represents Olthaus, said Cincinnati police intelligence found messages on social media boards in which people were talking about taking actual concrete steps to harm him and his family.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Megan Shanahan agreed to allow Olthaus to proceed with his case under a pseudonym: the initials M.R. Shanahan also approved a temporary restraining order barring Neisen and White from releasing any personal information about the officer.

Cleveland has long had initiatives that provide assistance to people experiencing mental health crises, problems with substance abuse, or other traumatic events. The city also has implemented violence interruption programs over the years, with varying degrees of success. The intersection of the consent decree and ongoing killings of Black people by police forces in Cleveland has helped mobilize local advocates. Crisis line and mobile team
One local example is a countywide crisis line and mobile response team operated since the mid-1990s by the nonprofit organization FrontLine Service. It costs about $1.6 million a year to support 27 full-time staff who provide around-the-clock services, responding to approximately 1,500 calls and referrals each month. The program is mostly funded by the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County.

The Cleveland police recruitment process is based on a competitive ranking of applicants through each stage of screening. The process begins with prerequisites that all candidates must meet. To become a member of the CPD, applicants must:

Phase One: Explorers Program
The Explorers Program is a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The Law Enforcement Explorers Program is a character building and mentorship program that empowers youth to achieve their full potential, personally and professionally. Duties And Responsibilities Of Natural Resources Officers
Natural Resources Officers are commissioned peace officers who protect and promote Ohios natural resources:
- Law Enforcement and Public Service: Patrol and enforce laws on all waters of the state as well as state park, state forest, scenic river, and natural areas and preserve properties to keep visitors safe and to preserve Ohios natural resources for future generations.
- Education and Public Relations: Represent ODNR to the public as well as recreational and conservation groups. Teach in formal and casual settings. Whats Happening In Other Cities
There are several differences between whatâs taking place in Cleveland and in other cities that are being held up as models for new approaches to public safety. In some cities, medics and mental health workers are taking the role of first responders in cases that donât require an armed response so far in Cleveland, police remain first responders in all 911 calls, while mental health and social workers are by design not first on the scene. In other cities, independent oversight of policing has already been strengthened.
