Training The Next Generation Of Law Enforcement
Indiana University Police Departments Cadet Officer Program allows full-time IU students to work in the criminal justice system and in a law enforcement agency while pursuing their degree. The program typically takes two years to complete.
The Cadet Officer Program, which includes the participation in the Indiana University Police Academy, provides comprehensive and unique law enforcement training which, coupled with the universitys educational programs, produces a highly qualified, experienced, and educated law enforcement professional.
Physical Fitness Assessment Test
Based upon the Indiana Law Enforcement Academys physical fitness standards to graduate from the Police Academy. The standards are the same for males and females.
- Applicants must meet the standard for each exercise to pass the assessment test.
- This is a PASS/FAIL test only. No points are assigned for results.
- Vertical Jump Test
- Timed Sit Up Test
- If all physical fitness standards are met, the applicant will be eligible to take the written test.

Department & City Information
The Evansville, Indiana Police Department is located in the extreme Southwestern portion of Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River. The police department is a fully-accredited law enforcement agency, dedicated to a community-oriented policing program. The department includes the operation of three Sector Offices and serves an area of 41 square miles, covering 575 miles of city streets, and has a total authorized strength of 289 sworn officers and 31 civilian employees. The department is divided into four major divisions Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Administrative, and Support Services. Those divisions are broken down into 18 specialized units which cover all areas of law enforcement necessary to serve the City of Evansville and its approximate 120,000 citizens.
It is the goal of the City of Evansville Police Department and the Evansville Police Merit Commission to recruit the most qualified persons, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin or disability, to serve the citizens of Evansville as police officers. Hiring requirements are based on job-related criteria, taking into consideration the knowledge, personal attributes, skills and training required to perform the job tasks, so as to further the principle of equal employment opportunity.
How Can I Attend The Basic Recruit Training
There are two different ways you may attend the Basic Recruit Training, you can NOT just sign yourself up for the Basic Recruit Academy.
1) You can be hired by a member police department. They will send you to the Academy for basic training as their employee. This training must be completed within one year from the date you become a sworn, paid police officer, otherwise you will lose your arrest powers. Recruits attending the Basic Recruit training at the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy who have been hired by a Police Department will need their Police Department to register them on the ACADIS system on ILEA’s website. Their Police Department will then need to fax a copy of their “approved” status to 940-9432. This must be done at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the Basic Recruit Academy.OR2) Any of our member police agencies can, at their discretion, sponsor you. You would then be a tuition paying student, the tuition is currently $4500, which is subject to change at the Board’s discretion. The complete tuition is due the first day of the Basic Recruit Academy class, and is NON-REFUNDABLE. The forms needed for sponsored recruits can be found on our “Forms” page. Please fill those out and have your sponsoring department fax or mail them to NILEA at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the Basic Recruit Academy.
Basic Academy graduates may also be eligible for college credits from IU, Calumet College St. Joseph, and Ivy Tech.

Step : Background Investigation
All Peace Officer candidates must undergo a thorough background investigation which includes a drug test. When directed by the academy staff, Pre-Service Candidates should contact Professional Screening and Information . The current cost for the PSI background investigation for Pre-Service Candidates is $304.00 and is payable online. Contact your academy of choice to obtain the organization code and Chain of Custody form, when applicable, for the drug test. Once completed, the PSI background investigation results will be forwarded to the chosen academy.

Step : Interview With The Academy Manager
After completing the above steps, your chosen academy will contact you to schedule an appointment for an interview with the Academy Manager. This should be considered a formal interview, so please dress accordingly. The Academy Manager will determine the candidates demeanor and suitability to become a certified Peace Officer in the State of Georgia.

Attend A Training Academy
If you pass the screening process, then the police department can place you in an approved law enforcement academy in Indiana. During this time, you can gain the knowledge that you can while working as a police officer. This includes information about state ordinances, local laws and criminal investigations. You may also take part in physical training where you may run, lift weights and perform exercises to increase your agility.
The academy may train you to perform basic police tasks, like routine traffic stops and arrests, while following state regulations from the Indiana Code for police officers. Most police training academies last from 20 to 30 weeks. During this time, you can meet other recruits, advance your law enforcement knowledge and strengthen your physical endurance.

Indiana University Police Academy
The IU Police Academy was developed by the IU Police Department, and is a satellite academy of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Graduates of the IU Police Academy, like graduates of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, receive accreditation as a state-certified law enforcement officer with full police authority.
IU students in the academy receive education and training on more than 90 topics, totaling over 600 hours of instruction with more than 16 examinations. Some of the material covered includes federal and state laws, individual rights, investigation procedures, physical tactics, medical aid, emergency vehicle operations, and numerous others.

Who Is Eligible To Apply To The Cadet Officer Program
In order to be eligible to apply for the program and to graduate from the Police Academy you must:
- Be or become a U.S. citizen prior to graduating from the Police Academy
- Be at least 21 years old the year you would graduate from the Police Academy
- Be a full-time student in good academic standing. You must maintain full-time student status and have above a 2.5 G.P.A. while in the program.
- Have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
- Possess a valid automobile operators license
- Pass a battery of physical and psychological tests
- Pass an intensive background investigation
- Have no major sensory impediments

Step : Post Application Physical Examination And Fingerprints
Once a background investigation is complete, register on the Georgia POST website as a new user so you can begin your online application. It is essential that you complete this application correctly or your admittance to the Basic Training Course will be delayed. There are several attachments to the application as well as a requirement for a physical examination and a requirement that you are fingerprinted. You should go to Georgia Applicants Processing Service to be fingerprinted. Physical examinations generally cost about $30 and the fee to be fingerprinted is roughly $53. Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy
The Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy was created on September 15th, 1982. Originally named the Lake Suburban Public Safety Training Council, Inc., the organization’s inception was in response to a legislative mandate that all police officers in Indiana have a minimum of sixteen hours of in-service training to maintain certification as law enforcement officers.
The four charter member agencies of the Public Safety Training Council were Highland, Schererville, Crown Point, and St. John. Over the following decades, membership grew to as many as over sixty-four police departments covering a twelve county radius. The name of the organization also changed, and by 1990 it was known as the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Training Center . When the LETB authorized NILETC to deliver basic recruit training, it was renamed to the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy . Today, NILEA provides in-service training programs to over one thousand eight hundred police officers, offering in-service training classes and two fifteen week basic recruit academy classes annually.
