North Las Vegas police officer takes in 5 children after father is fatally shot

Laws » How to file a complaint against a police officer in Nevada?

Victims of police misconduct in Nevada can always file a complaint against the officer. Common grievances are that the police either:

  • used excessive force against the victim,
  • wrongfully confiscated the victims property, and/or
  • damaged the victims property

Once victims file a complaint, the police departments review board will conduct an investigation. If the board finds that the complaint is credible, the board may request that the victim come in to give testimony against the officer.

While the investigation is pending, the police department may choose to suspend the police officer with or without paid leave. Depending on the results of the police investigation, the officer may be disciplined or fired. However, the police department will usually not inform the victim about the outcome of the investigation due to privacy concerns.

Victims of police misconduct should always contact a criminal defense attorney prior to making a complaint. An attorney can help determine whether the victim has legitimate grounds for the complaint. Most importantly, the attorney can help the victim word the complaint in such a way so as not to incriminate the victim in any way.

Many police officers are required to investigate the crimes they come across. For instance, on the off chance that they come upon a homicide, they should attempt to discover who did it and how it happened. On the other hand, on the off chance that they should discover drugs, they must examine its source. They are obligated to collect whatever evidence that they think is relevant and submit it to their superiors or to the forensics department for additional inquiry. Sometimes, to get proof, they can lie or deceive a suspect to get a confession out of them. An acknowledgement of wrongdoing is the most invaluable confirmation any officer can have.

A Las Vegas police officer suspected of impaired driving told detectives he took Oxycontin and drank vodka before crashing his SUV last week, according to an arrest report released Tuesday.

Richard Chavez, 47, was arrested Oct. 25 and jailed on driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop at the scene of a crash involving damage and failing to obey a red light, according to court records.

Officers were called at 7:49 a.m. that day to the intersection of East Silverado Ranch Boulevard and Bermuda Road after a report of a crash, according an arrest report from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Crossing guards told police that a black SUV collided with an Acura, and the SUV had left the scene. Detectives found the SUV and the driver, who identified himself as Chavez, in a nearby parking lot, the report stated. Chavez said the crash was his fault, according to the report, but gave police three different stories as to where he was going.

The report did not state whether the driver of the Acura suffered any injuries in the crash.

Police said Chavez speech was slurred and his breath smelled of alcohol, and that he told officers he was taking Oxycontin.

He had vodka to drink but stated he did not drink a lot of it, police wrote in the arrest report.
