According to CBS affiliate WJAX, 20-year-old Reginald Leon Boston Jr. was fatally shot by Jacksonville police who said they had set up an undercover operation to find a man who robbed someone at gunpoint. Police had three suspects, including Boston.
Officers attempted to arrest Boston and two others when suspects allegedly displayed a gun that they would not put down, WJAX reported. Officers shot two suspects, including Boston. Boston was killed at the scene.
It is not clear if Boston was the person holding the gun.
March 201: Stephon Clark
Stephon Clark died after being shot at least seven times in his grandmother’s backyard in Sacramento, California, by police who were investigating a nearby break-in.
Only a mobile phone was found at the scene, and Mr Clark was unarmed.
The release of a police video of the incident sparked major protests in the city.
In March 2019, the authorities announced that the two officers involved would not face criminal prosecution as the officers had feared for their lives, believing Mr Clark had a gun.

The Washington Post’s Pulitzer Prize-winning database tracks only deaths in which a U.S. police officer shoots, and kills, a civilian in the line of duty, “the circumstances that most closely parallel the 2014 killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., which began the protest movement culminating in Black Lives Matter.”
There have been 1,499 such deaths in total across the U.S. since January 2015, according to the Post, which also uses the data to display insights such as “almost all of the people shot and killed by police were men” and “body-worn police cameras were known to be recording in one in eight fatal police shootings.”

In some parts of the US, police kill black people at a rate six times higher than they kill white people. The differences are most stark in the northern Midwest, especially Chicago, and in north-eastern states like New York.
Protest movements like Black Lives Matter have highlighted the disproportionate killing of black people by US police, and called for major changes in policing practices. However, official data on police killings can be unreliable. The database run by the Bureau of Justice Statistics is known to undercount deaths, partly because police forces dont have to contribute data. That makes it harder to stop the killings.
Gabriel Schwartz and Jaquelyn Jahn at Harvard University compared police killings in different regions of the US between 2013 and 2017. They used data from Fatal Encounters, an independent organisation that gathers public and media reports of killings, and fact-checks them.
The researchers assigned each death to one of the USs 382 metropolitan statistical areas. These are cities and the areas surrounding cities, says Jahn, and reflect where people spend most of their time.

What Is The Problem
Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. They experience 10 times the gun homicides, 18 times the gun assault injuries, and nearly 3 times the fatal police shootings of white Americans.
Gun homicides, assaults, and police shootings are disproportionately prevalent in historically underfunded neighborhoods and cities. This lack of funding intensifies our countrys long-standing racial inequities.
Local groups, residents, and city officials are driving solutions to reduce gun violence and increase safety in their communities, but data and resources are needed to support these efforts.

Darwin Darrin Barnell Foy
Webster City, Iowa
According to the Associated Press, 35-year-old Darwin Barnell Foy was shot and killed by Iowa State Troopers who said they were responding to a 911 call from a woman who said that a man had fired shots at her.
Police said they negotiated with Foy for hours but he threatened to shoot the woman within a specific amount of time. The troopers then went into the home and shot Foy.
Black Americans Disproportionately Killed By Police
According to an analysis by Mapping Police Violence, despite only making up 13 percent of the US population, Black Americans are nearly three times as likely as white Americans to be killed by the police. The group also found that levels of violent crime in US cities do not determine rates of police violence.
A further analysis performed by policeviolencereport.org found that Black people were more likely to be killed by police , more likely to be unarmed and less likely to be threatening someone when killed .

Darrell William Mobley Sr
Syracuse, New York
According to CBS affiliate WRGB, 48-year-old Darrell Mobley was shot and killed by a Syracuse police officer after police responded to reports of a burglary in progress.
Police said when they arrived at the scene, Mobley was holding a knife. Mobley allegedly stabbed an officer in the neck, prompting the officer to fire multiple rounds at Mobley, hitting him once. The officer was not wearing a body camera.
Mobley died at the hospital.

Nathaniel Pickett Sr., 65, said that Nate was the only child he had with Dominic Archibald, a two-time combat veteran and retired Army colonel. After their divorce in 1990 when Nate was not quite 5, the boy went to live with his mom. He became a Boy Scout and fancied Frank Sinatra music, art and sports except football because he didn’t like getting dirty. Archibald eventually enrolled him at the Fork Union Military Academy, an all-boys college preparatory boarding school in Virginia. She agreed to let him transfer in his senior year to Woodrow Wilson High School, a public school in Washington, D.C.
“We just wanted him to be happy,” Pickett said.
Less than three years after Pickett’s death, Woods was involved in a second on-duty shooting of another unarmed man.
Woods was not wearing a body camera. Martinez did not respond to a request through his mother for an interview.
“He was shot 3” times, his mother, Kathy Searcy, said in a Facebook message to NPR that included photos of his bullet wounds. “Plus, he was being tased at the same time.”
Michael Ramos, the San Bernardino County district attorney at the time of both shootings, declined to charge Woods, saying the deputy was justified in shooting both men. He said in a recent phone interview with NPR that he doesn’t remember the cases but said he always adhered to the law when deciding whether to charge an officer with killing someone.

Samuel David Mallard 19
When cops went to serve a warrant to Samuel David Mallard at his home, the 19-year-old reportedly fled before officers stopped he vehicle and Issued verbal command, according to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. What came next, though, was unclear except for the part where four police officers all fired shots at Mallard, who local news outlets said vaguely did not cooperate with law enforcement. Conveniently, the GBI also announced that a gun was found in Mallards vehicle, although there were no reports that alleged gun ever posed a threat to the lives of the officers involved.
Police Attacks On Journalists
According to the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, at least 100 journalists have been arrested while covering the protests, while 114 have been physically attacked by police officers. Although some journalists have been attacked by protesters, over 80% of incidents involving violence against the news media were committed by law enforcement officers. The Committee to Protect Journalists has accused police officers of intentionally targeting news crews in an attempt to intimidate them from covering the protests. Some journalists covering the protests in Minneapolis had their tires slashed by Minnesota State Patrol troopers and Anoka County sheriff’s deputies.

The comments come as President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order calling on police departments to adopt stricter use-of-force standards and create a database to track officer misconduct amid an eruption of social unrest in America over racial inequality and the treatment of blacks by law enforcement after a number of recent incidents.
Protests across the globe have been ignited by the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man who perished in police custody on May 25 in Minneapolis as a white police officer drove his knee into his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
Giuliani, however, described the reaction to the incidences and calls to defund the police as created and almost hysterical.

August 201: Michael Brown
Michael Brown, 18, was killed by a police officer, in Ferguson, Missouri, who was responding to reports that Brown had stolen a box of cigars.
The officer, Darren Wilson, stopped his car in front of Brown.
Brown reached into the car and punched Wilson, and in the struggle that followed, he tried to grab the police officer’s gun, according to a report by the Department of Justice , which was based on forensic evidence and interviews with dozens of witnesses.
One shot was fired and Brown ran off, pursued by Wilson. When he turned back and moved towards Wilson, the fatal shots were fired, according to witnesses.
Although the police officer was cleared of wrongdoing, the DOJ report was scathing about systemic problems in the Ferguson police and racial disparities in the justice system.
The incident led to multiple waves of protests and civil unrest in Ferguson, boosting the Black Lives Matter movement further.

CBCâs Deadly Force database looks at role of race, mental health in deaths

It has already been a particularly deadly year in terms of people killed in encounters with police in Canada â and Black and Indigenous people continue to be over-represented among the fatalities.
There were 30 people killed after police used force in Canada in the first half of 2020, which is the full-year average for such deaths over the past 10 years . This is according to the Deadly Force database, updated and maintained by the CBCâs own researchers.
The database shows Black and Indigenous people are disproportionately represented amongst the victims compared to their share of the overall population.
The data also finds most of those killed in police encounters suffer from mental illness or substance abuse.
There is no government database listing deaths at the hands of the police available to the public in Canada, so CBC News created its own. The CBCâs research librarians have collected detailed information on each case, such as ethnicity, the role of mental illness or substance abuse, the type of weapon used and the police service involved, to create a picture of who is dying in police encounters.
The database focuses onfatal encounters where police used force. It does not include in-custody deaths, self-inflicted wounds as a result of suicide or attempts to evade police, or accidental police-caused deaths .

What Is Blue Lives Matter

More Than 250 Black People Were Killed By Police In 2016
U.S. police killed at least 258 black people in 2016, according to a project by The Guardian that tracks police killings in America.
Thirty-nine of these people were unarmed. Four were killed by police stun guns and another nine died in custody, a continuing problem in American jails. But the majority of black people killed by police were fatally shot.
Based on a tracker from The Washington Post, at least 232 black folks were shot and killed.
The Post found that 34 percent of the unarmed people killed in 2016 were black males, which is quite disproportionate since black men make up only 6 percent of the U.S. population. There was also a considerable uptick in deaths caught on camera via cellphone and police cameras.
Take the case of Keith Lamont Scott, who was shot and killed by an officer in Charlotte, North Carolina, in September. Scott was the 173rd black person to be fatally shot by police in 2016, based on The Washington Post tally.
Police were searching for another man when they came across Scott, who they claim was armed. Charlotte police Chief Kerr Putney said in a news conference on Tuesday that officers told Scott to drop his weapon, but that Scott got back into his car and came out again still holding the gun.
A woman who identified herself as Scotts daughter recorded the shootings aftermath on Live. Scott, according to her and other witnesses, did not have a gun and was disabled. Scotts killing has touched off violent protests in Charlotte.

Ronell Foster was riding his bicycle through the hushed streets of Vallejo, Calif., one evening when a police officer noticed that the bike had no lights and that he was weaving in and out of traffic.
The officer, Ryan McMahon, went after Foster with lights flashing, siren blaring and the car’s spotlight pointed directly at him. Foster stopped. The pair exchanged words before Foster, who was on community supervision for a car theft conviction a month earlier, fled, eventually ditching the bicycle. McMahon caught up with Foster and jumped on top of him. The two struggled. McMahon, a rookie on the force, used a Taser on the father of two and struck him several times with his department-issued flashlight. Gunfire erupted seven shots total. When it was over, Foster, 33, lay dying in the bushes in a darkened courtyard near an apartment complex.

Three other officers who were involved in the incident will be tried later this year accused of aiding and abetting Mr Chauvin.
List Of Killings By Law Enforcement Officers In Canada
This is a list of people whose deaths were caused by, or in relation to an interaction with non-military law enforcement officers in Canada. The list includes deaths caused by officers both on and off duty, and does not discriminate by method or motivation.
This list is incomplete there are no official statistics on fatal shootings by law enforcement officers in Canada, though the range had previously been estimated to be between 15 and 25 per year. In 2018, The CBC published “Deadly Force”, an investigative report described as “the first country-wide database of every person who died or was killed during a police intervention”, which documented 461 fatal police encounters in Canada between 2000 and 2017, suggesting the average is closer to 26 people a year. “Deadly Force” also recorded an increasing average yearly number of police-involved deaths over time. At the moment, Statistics Canada only tracks fatal police shootings if the officer involved is criminally charged.
