How Do I Get a Copy Of My Police Report?

Effective January 1, 2022 a non-refundable application fee of $10 is required for all general FOI requests. Your request will not be processed until payment is received. Upon receipt of your request, you will receive a letter of acknowledgement with an invoice and instructions on how to proceed with fee payment.

There are no fees for making an FOI request for your own personal information or for someone you have proof of authority or signed consent for disclosure.

Section 75 of the Act permits Surrey Police Service to charge an additional fee for locating, retrieving, producing, and preparing the record for disclosure. Applicants are not required to pay a fee for the first 3 hours spent locating and retrieving a record or time spent severing information from a record.

How To Request Records Contained In A Major Collision File

    Why Do I Need To Be Precise When Requesting Information

    The RCMP is a large, multi-jurisdictional organization with offices and detachments across Canada. We use many different record-keeping systems that are not fully integrated. Searches for records are not done by the ATIP Branch in Ottawa they are done by the division, detachment, program or employee who holds the records in question. As such, we need to understand the geographic location where your request will primarily be held in order to task it appropriately. For this reason, the more precise the request is, the faster we can respond.

    You must include enough information about the records you wish to access to allow an experienced employee of the RCMP, with reasonable effort, to find the records being requested. For example:

    • provide a clear and detailed description of the information you are looking for
    • give a date range and location

    Why Am I Not Able To Obtain A Police Report

    The most common reason why people cannot get a copy of a police report is because of an ongoing investigation. Once the case is closed, you should be able to obtain a copy.

    What Happens Once You Make Your Request

    How long will it take to receive information?

    • Requests are handled in the order in which they are received. We receive a large number of requests on a daily basis and have a significant backlog.
    • Once you make your request, the RCMP’s ATIP Branch in Ottawa opens a file and identifies where relevant records may be located. Employees located across the country are contacted and asked to provide material, depending on the request.
    • The ATIP Branch may also request an extension if more time is needed to collect the information. It can be granted provided the extension is justified.
    • Once tasked, RCMP employees must search for all relevant material, which can include electronic files, notebook entries, emails, text messages, etc., and supply them to the ATIP Branch in Ottawa for processing.
    • The ATIP Branch may conduct additional consultations, either within the RCMP or with external partners, as needed.
    • All of the submitted material is then reviewed by the ATIP Branch, and exemptions and/or exclusions are applied, as outlined by the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. The ATIP Branch will then release the material to the requester.

    Who Can Request A Copy Of A Report

    Copies of police reports may be requested by authorized parties of interest including:

    • A victim or named witness of a crime
    • Party or registered owner of a vehicle involved in a traffic collision
    • Parent or guardian of a juvenile
    • The insurance carrier against whom claim has been made or may be made
    • Person who suffered bodily injury or property damage as a result of an incident

    To see if your report is available in our system use ‘List Reports on File by Date’ to see a list of accidents by the county and date you select . The list of accidents will include the plate numbers of the vehicles involved in the accident.

    If there are reports you want, you will need to do a paid search before you can order them.

    Second: Do a ‘Paid’ search

    To search for your report use ‘Search by Plate Number, License Number, or DMV Accident Case Number’ .

    You will be charged a fee even if

    • you enter the incorrect information, or
    • if the report are not found

    Information That Will Not Be Provided

    Amy Anderson, 43, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was sitting in a parked SUV with a female child younger than 10 years old when the officers were sent to the parking lot of a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis around 4:30 a.m. on a welfare check, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

    Bay St. Louis Police Sgt. Steven Robin and officer Branden Estorffe spoke to Anderson for nearly a half-hour before she fired at them while sitting in the vehicle, investigators said. During the conversation, the officers called for Child Protection Services, the police statement said.

    Robin, 34, died in the parking lot. Estorffe, 23, died a short time later at the hospital, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents said.

    The process of requesting a copy of a police report by mail is a bit more involved. In many jurisdictions, you are required to make your Public Access Request via mail.     Information held by the Board typically includes agendas and minutes of Board meetings and those of its committees, correspondence, agreements, as well as various other materials under the day-to-day care and control of the Board.
