How Is Mobile Phone Spy Software Used To Track Cell Phones

Mobile Phone Spy Software is used to track and monitor activity on mobile devices, tablets, and computers. Activities include such things as incoming and outgoing phone calls, text messages, online activity, social media activity, GPS location, and much more.

The purpose of using mobile phone tracking software varies depending on who you are monitoring. The software works in the background and essentially records everything that happens on the device. The best mobile phone spy software solutions and parental control apps will do the following:

Track incoming and outgoing phone calls, including the timestamp and duration. Capture incoming and outgoing text messages and social media activity. Record web browsing activity including the URL of all websites in history. Make copies of any pictures of videos sent or received. This helpful feature provides you with the proof you need to confront the individual regarding their activity on the electronic device.

In addition, they will track the GPS location of the device. This allows parents or employers to know the exact location of the mobile device at all times. And, they will allow access to the address book and calendar. This feature allows concerned parents to know who their child is communicating with. The apps also provide the monitoring party with remote access to the data and information via an online control panel to review the activity

Block Stingray By Disabling 2g

The most straightforward way to protect yourself against StingRay attacks is to disable 2G networking on your phone. Unfortunately, very few phone manufacturers allow you to do this, with all of the big companies only letting you disable 3G or 4G.

To get around this, you can jailbreak or root your phone and install third-party software such as the Xposed Framework to disable 2G connections. That said, this only protects you if your phone connects directly to a 2G network, but not against the security vulnerability in 3G and 4G cellular networks that automatically switches the signal to 2G if needed.

Whats worse is that the StingRay in itself is an outdated technology. Law enforcement agencies also have access to more modern cell-site simulators that target 3G and 4G networks, making them much harder to avoid entirely.

In fact, U.S. carriers are in the process of phasing out their 2G networks. AT& T stopped servicing their 2G network in 2017 and Verizon did in 2020. Sprint and T-Mobile arent quite as far along, but they also plan to phase out their 2G networks by December 2021 and December 2022, respectively.

Do Stingrays And Dirtboxes Have Other Capabilities

Mobile Tracking Software Used By Police Free Download

Stingrays and dirtboxes can be configured for use in either active or passive mode. In active mode, these technologies broadcast to devices and communicate with them. Passive mode involves grabbing whatever data and communication is occurring in real time across cellular networks without requiring the phone to communicate directly with the interception device. The data captured can include the IMSI number as well as text messages, email, and voice calls.

If that data or communication is encrypted, then it would be useless to anyone intercepting it if they dont also have a way to decrypt it. Phones that are using 4G employ strong encryption. But stingrays can force phones to downgrade to 2G, a less secure protocol, and tell the phone to use either no encryption or use a weak encryption that can be cracked. They can do this because even though most people use 4G these days, there are some areas of the world where 2G networks are still common, and therefore all phones have to have the ability to communicate on those networks.

The versions of stingrays used by the military can intercept the contents of mobile communications text messages, email, and voice calls and decrypt some types of this mobile communication. The military also uses a jamming or denial-of-service feature that prevents adversaries from detonating bombs with a mobile phone.

Milwaukee Pds Cell Phone Monitoring Technology

By: Isiah Holmes– March 16, 2021 7:00 am

For police departments, tools of the trade sometimes come with big price tags. That certainly describes contracts and purchase orders for two sophisticated pieces of equipment used by the Milwaukee Police Department to monitor cell phones and access their data.

According to documents obtained by Wisconsin Examiner via open records requests to the citys purchasing division, a new cell site simulator system purchased by MPD in May 2019 cost $498,900.

Cell site simulators trick cell phones by acting like cell towers. Once a phone connects, the CSS intercepts information from the phone and can track its location. With the right software it can also monitor calls and text messages, or send fake text messages. The devices are also known to cause malfunctions and interference in nearby phones as well as those with which they connect.

The CSS purchase contract itemizes different key aspects of the device including an eight-channel portable base station at $207,500 a seven-band transportable amplifier at $218,400, another $40,000 for a two-year warranty, a part of the device that fits on police vehicles for $23,000, and $10,000 for a week of on-site training. It also shows that MPD went through a different company to acquire the system than it had in years past.

The Nyxcell CSSs ability to emulate multiple types of cell towers at once may also affect the interference these technologies can cause to phones.

Can Police Track Phone Calls

Stingray Technology

Most people have never heard of stingray technology, but that does not stop government and police agencies from using it to spy on citizens. Essentially what Stingray refers to is a secretive technology that mimics cellular towers to confuse mobile phones in proximity to the device. What happens is that the mobile phone is tricked to think the stingray device is a legitimate cell tower and therefore connects to the spy device. Once connected to the stingray, police can then track call history, identify who is calling into the mobile device, monitor conversation, pinpoint the location of an individual, and more. Stingray technology essentially takes domestic wiretapping to a whole new advanced and terrifying level of privacy invasion, and that is why everyone should hold some concern.

Two organizations, the ACLU and EFF, have moved forward with legal paperwork stating investigations using stingray technology were essentially illegal. The reason is that authorities using the stingray technology did so without first explaining in detail to the courts how they would use stingray devices. Both organizations feel that the government and police intentionally misled the oversight authority knowing that if the truth was revealed the courts may be apprehensive to greenlight any such activity.

Survey Of Police Forces

How do the police track a mobile phone? (AKIO TV)

CBC News has since contacted 30 provincial and municipal police forces across Canada to ask how many IMSI catchers they own, the number of operators trained to use them, and how many times the technology was used in 2015 and 2016.

Only Calgary police answered in full.

Ryan Jepson, the head of Calgary police’s technical operations section, said his force has owned one IMSI catcher since 2015. It was used in six investigations that year, and eight more in 2016.

He says the device is only deployed by “a very small group of trained operators” within his unit, and is only used to identify suspects’ devices not track their location or collect the content of their communications.

“It’s the same as the RCMP. We don’t intercept private communications,” Jepson said.

Ontario Provincial Police and Winnipeg police each possess at least one IMSI catcher, but declined to discuss:

  • Whether their technology is used to capture the contents of communications.
  • How many technicians are trained to operate the technology.
  • The number of investigations in which the device was used in 2015 and 2016.

Both forces said revealing more information could jeopardize ongoing investigations, court proceedings, and public and officer safety. But Jepson in Calgary disagrees.

“I have no issues with being transparent about it. It was never the intent to be secretive,” he said. “It was about being able to protect certain techniques.”

How police can find your deleted text messages

BALTIMORE The crime itself was ordinary: Someone smashed the back window of a parked car one evening and ran off with a cellphone. What was unusual was how the police hunted the thief.

Detectives did it by secretly using one of the governments most powerful phone surveillance tools capable of intercepting data from hundreds of peoples cellphones at a time to track the phone, and with it their suspect, to the doorway of a public housing complex. They used it to search for a car thief, too. And a woman who made a string of harassing phone calls.

In one case after another, USA TODAY found police in Baltimore and other cities used the phone tracker, commonly known as a stingray, to locate the perpetrators of routine street crimes and frequently concealed that fact from the suspects, their lawyers and even judges. In the process, they quietly transformed a form of surveillance billed as a tool to hunt terrorists and kidnappers into a staple of everyday policing.

The suitcase-size tracking systems, which can cost as much as $400,000, allow the police to pinpoint a phones location within a few yards by posing as a cell tower. In the process, they can intercept information from the phones of nearly everyone else who happens to be nearby, including innocent bystanders. They do not intercept the content of any communications.

Is It Safe To Give Your Imei Number To Anyone

IMEI number can potentially be misused, which is why you should only share it with those you trust, e.g. your mobile operator, law enforcement authorities, your employer etc. There may be occasions when your mobile operator may request the IMEI number of your device for enabling/disabling services.

For example, you need your IMEI number if you want to unlock a mobile phone. If your IMEI gets into the wrong hands, it can potentially be misused. Even though the IMEI number is unique and stays with the mobile device for its lifecycle, it is technically possible for someone to alter it. Making any modification to the IMEI number is called unblocking, a criminal offence under UK laws. If someone with bad intentions gets hold of your IMEI number, and if they have access to specialised tools, they can potentially use your IMEI on any other mobile phone. If that phone then gets used for any illegal activities, your IMEI number can be at the risk of becoming a scapegoat.

What Can Law Enforcement Do With The Imsi Number

How do police track phones without a warrant?

Law enforcement can use a stingray either to identify all of the phones in the vicinity of the stingray or a specific phone, even when the phones are not in use. Law enforcement can then, with a subpoena, ask a phone carrier to provide the customer name and address associated with that number or numbers. They can also obtain a historical log of all of the cell towers a phone has pinged in the recent past to track where it has been, or they can obtain the cell towers its pinging in real time to identify the users current location. By catching multiple IMSI numbers in the vicinity of a stingray, law enforcement can also potentially uncover associations between people by seeing which phones ping the same cell towers around the same time.
