Many departments require applicants to undergo a polygraph exam to determine their level of truthfulness. In most cases, the polygraph will serve to confirm the information a candidate provided in their supplemental application.

Applicants are given the opportunity to talk about their answers with their polygraph examiner and go even more in-depth with questions. After questioning, applicants are hooked up to a polygraph instrument and asked a series of “yes or no” questions for the purpose of detecting truthfulness or deception.

Is Being A Police Officer A Good Job

There are clear advantages to working in this profession, but it comes with some of the largest downsides experienced in almost any career. As a police officer, you see some of the worst aspects of society, including domestic violence, ravages of drug abuse, and even murder. But there are real advantages as well. As a police officer, you will experience pride in your job and, on occasion, the community will show its support and appreciation, which can make all the stresses worth the effort. Despite the challenges, youll know that your work makes the community a better place few careers can honestly make this claim.

My name is Sundeep Kaur Cheema. I am a custody sergeant for West Midlands Police.

I am a Sikh, and one of the fundamental principles is serving others. As a Sikh officer, I just feel that complements my role because those values and my morals and the morals that have been instilled within me over the years, through grandparents as well, but particularly faith is just a complementary feature to policing.

One of they key reasons why I wanted to join policing is because I hadnt seen any other Asian officers. Theres nobody that I felt was representing our community. My cousin who is also a sergeant with West Mids, he was already a police officer, so Id spoken to him and he inspired me to join.

As a custody sergeant, my main responsibility is looking after the welfare and needs of any detained person that comes into custody.

Ive grown up within a store, so my parents are independent retailer. Ive spent all my life, my childhood, within the business environment, serving the community. You know I know no different. So again, when it comes to policing this is quite a natural transition for me.

Be Ready For A Fitness Assessment

To help ensure you are physically capable of performing the duties of a law enforcement officer and enduring the rigors of the police academy training, most departments require candidates to participate in some form of physical abilities testing.

Fitness tests may consist of an overall physical assessment including sit-ups, push-ups, sprints, and a 1.5-mile run. In such tests, applicants are expected to perform at a certain level of fitness, which sometimes varies depending on age and gender.

Such tests are often easier to pass than the fitness assessment, and the time required to pass is not typically dependent on the age or gender of the applicant.

What Do You Need to be a Police Officer?

A career in law enforcement can seem exciting, rewarding and fun. It’s true that there are many good reasons to become a police officer, but before you take the leap and decide on this as a career, there are a few things you probably should know.

The Hiring Process– Long gone are the days of getting hired on the spot. You’re not going to walk into your local police station, hand in a job application, and be patrolling the streets the next day. The hiring process is now often quite long, taking four to twelve months or even longer.

Background Checks– Background checks for police employment are very detailed and thorough. Typically, they include a criminal history check, a credit check, and a look at your previous employment. Questions will also be asked about any past drug use. There may also be a polygraph exam, a medical physical exam, and a fitness test. All of this is just to see if the department should consider giving you an interview.

Academy Training– Training to be a police officer is hard. Some will succeed academically, but find the physical fitness gruelling. Some will be physically strong but have trouble passing the academic qualifications. Candidates will have to qualify with a firearm, or demonstrate proficiency in defensive tactics, first aid, and driving. Many recruits and cadets wash out of their academy classes due to injuries sustained during training.
