Where Do Stolen Smartphones Go

How to file Online Police complaint about lost mobile phone

With so many protective measures in place to prevent thieves from actually using a phone, you might wonder what happens to these stolen devices. Since locks have been placed on devices and those that have been reported stolen dont work with any in-country cellular providers, the number of smartphone thefts is in decline. However, there is still a market for stolen phones, even those that are locked.

The good news is that thieves are typically after the device itself and not the contents of your phone. Devices are often purchased by pawn shops, wireless stores , and regular mom-and-pop shops. Where possible, the thieves themselves or the buyers will replace the SIM card and reprogram the phones. This can be fairly easily done if the phone hasnt been locked by the manufacturer.

With some devices, people are able to get around locks by performing factory resets or other methods. Or they may just sell them on under the pretense they are unlocked. Other devices are sold for parts, while many end up overseas. Its unclear if foreign carriers can bypass locks put in place in the country of origin, but this may be a potential scenario. Some devices are worth many times overseas what they would be in, say, the US or the UK.

Paying For Unauthorised Calls

If someone else runs up a big bill on your phone youll usually have to pay for the cost of the calls up until the time you reported the phone missing.

Some phone networks will only charge you a maximum of £100 if your phone is lost or stolen, as long as you report it within 24 hours. This only applies for monthly contracts – if you have a pay-as-you go contract, you might not get a refund for any credit thats used before you report the loss.

If your network charges you the full amount for the calls made before you reported it, you should ask if they can reduce the bill. Sometimes theyll do this as a gesture of goodwill but they dont have to.

If your network provider tries to charge you for calls made after you reported the phone missing, you should dispute the bill.

If your phone is insured you might be covered for the cost of unauthorised calls made between you losing your phone and reporting it missing. Check with your insurance provider to see if youre covered.

You Have Nothing To Lose And Everything To Gain By Reporting Your Stolen Phone

First, lets get something out of the way: the chances of police themselves actually recovering your stolen phone are astronomically low. In India, for instance, only 2% of stolen phones are ever recovered!

While the UK and US police havent released similar figures, we do know that almost AT LEAST a million people get their phones stolen every year and its unlikely that any significant percentage of them actually recover the devices due to imperfect solutions for phone recovering.
