The BEST Flashlight – Whats The best Police Officer Flashlight?

No. Both entry-level and lateral candidates must have 3-5 years as a patrol officer before transfers or promotions. Having experience with the unpredictable and diverse nature of events that come with patrol work is absolutely vital background knowledge before making a transition to any other type of police work. Modern policing is very complex and every city is very different so it is also important that you learn the specifics of this department and this city before any transfers.

People choose to go into policing because they love the job. In fact, many patrol officers find that they love the work so much that they choose to stay in patrol for their entire career. If you are not interested in patrol work at all and only want to be part of an advanced specialty unit, you are probably not ready to realistically consider a career in policing.

Qualifying As An Older Rookie

Assuming the department you want to join doesn’t set a maximum age to become a police officer, that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a job. You’ll still have to meet the other standards the department sets.

  • Physical fitness. If you aren’t fit enough, you won’t be hired. A PD open to older cops may not set the same standards for a 50-something as a 20-something. In Florida, for instance, a 21-year-old has to manage 40 sit-ups and 33 pushups in the fitness test, according to Tactical Functional Training. At 50, it’s 26 and 15.
  • Vision and hearing. UCLA says, for example, that its law enforcement officers must have 20/100 vision, correctable to 20/30, functional color vision and hearing loss no greater than 25 decibels at 500 to 2,500 Hertz.
  • Education. The New York state police require, for example, high school graduation or a GED, plus at least 60 hours of college credits. Life experience or military training may substitute for some of the college courses.
  • Passing a background check. If you’ve lived 50 years without serious trouble, that’s good news. If you’ve acquired a felony conviction or a drug habit along the way, you may be red-flagged when you apply.

Derek Chauvin behind bars in Minnesota max security prison | WNT

When preparing yourself for a policing career, you need to be aware of what will disqualify you from the police application process. As far as the written, physical, and medical exams, the requirements are fairly consistent across all agencies.

Language Disqualifier: You need to be fluent in either English or French including being able to speak, read, and understand one of these languages.

Physical Disqualifier: You cannot be in poor physical condition. Failure to successfully complete the physical examination in the minimum time frame is an automatic disqualification.

Test particulars can vary from one police agency to the next. However, all tests simulate critical incidents that police officers are exposed to. For example. the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation , used by the RCMP, consists of three sections:

  • Running 6 laps around a 350-meter obstacle course where you are required to climb stairs and jump over hurdles
  • Pushing and pulling a 70lb weight
  • Carrying 80lbs over a 15-meter distance.
  • Psychological Disqualifiers: A candidate can be disqualified if they do not meet the minimum psychological examination requirements.

Work Environment Disqualifiers: Police departments require you to work shift work which includes nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as policing takes place 24 hours per day. If you are unwilling to accommodate this type of work schedule, you will be disqualified from the process.

    No Two Officers Are Alike

There is no one size fits all description for what a cop should look or be like. As officers deal with so many different types of people it only makes sense that the force should also be made up of different types of people. Each police force should, in some way, mirror the people they are assigned to keep safe. Communities of different races, social and financial standings etc. should be handled by appropriate and experienced types of officers.

One cop cannot do it all alone. Communities are best served by a police force that can function together as a team with each officer bringing something unique to the table. This creates a well-rounded force that can protect their jurisdiction most effectively. Including many officers of different ages and experiences will benefit the police force as a whole.
