Because they’ll be the ones in charge of making the arrest, local law enforcement agencies are where you can check on outstanding warrants, a process that’s always free.

Typically, your local police department or sheriff’s office maintains a free and current list of outstanding warrants on its official website. Usually, you can search for outstanding warrants anonymously using options such as the first and last name on the warrant, the wanted person’s date of birth or the case number . Sometimes, especially in smaller towns, these sites will simply maintain a full list of outstanding arrest warrants that you can view all at once.

In some instances, smaller law enforcement agencies may not offer this information online. No matter what size town you’re in, you can call your local police or sheriff’s department to obtain warrant information. Be aware, though, that the police may be able to track the physical address tied to a landline or the billing address attached to your cellphone number.

Likewise, you can check on outstanding warrants by visiting any precinct in-person or asking an officer on the street to run a warrant check on your name. Those latter two options are also convenient ways to turn yourself in. Read More:How to Search Free Arrest Warrants

My guess is that your warrant was for something minor and that is why it is not longer in the system. Your most recent arrest, though, could be an issue no matter where in the US that you apply for a job. Most employers now do background checks which check for warrants and convictions nationwide.

    Exemption : Exigent Circumstances

If the police feel that the time it would take to get a warrant would jeopardize public safety or lead to the loss of evidence, they can perform a search without a warrant. For example, the police can forcibly enter a home if it is probable that evidence is being destroyed, if a suspect is trying to escape, or if someone is being injured. The police officer’s responsibility to preserve evidence, arrest a suspect, or protect an individual outweighs the search warrant requirement.

Why You Might Want To Check For An Arrest Warrant

This might seem like a no-brainer. But not all arrest warrants are issued because someone committed a high-caliber crime or because youre just a bad person. You can have a warrant out because you did something as simple as forgetting to pay a parking ticket. Or youre a suspect in a crime even if its a misunderstanding and you werent involved.

You can also have a warrant out for something like bouncing a check. Even if you didnt mean to and never even knew it bounced.

Anything that would amount to a felony or a misdemeanor is grounds for police to get an arrest warrant. As long as they can prove you did it or its a felony charge. Being suspected of a misdemeanor isnt usually enough for an arrest warrant. But it is enough for a felony.

Additionally, if you dont show up for court or pay a ticket, you may have a warrant. Even if you never knew you had court scheduled. I almost had this happen with jury duty because I didnt get the letter. Its not as difficult or unheard of as youd think.

So, again, you dont need to commit murder to find yourself with a warrant.

It’s understandable that you might want to know if the cops are looking for you and more specifically, whether the authorities have issued a warrant for your arrest. Short of strolling into the local police station and asking them about said warrant, there are a number of ways to figure out if there’s an active warrant in your name.

Warrants don’t just appear out of thin air. A judge issues an arrest warrant upon probable cause. Probable cause means that a law enforcement officer believes that he or she has enough information regarding a crime to make a legitimate arrest .

There are two kinds of warrants: arrest and bench. Arrest warrants occur if you’ve committed criminal activity and the police actively come looking for you. Bench warrants are issued by judges when you fail to follow the rules of the court, for instance, you missed a trial date or didn’t pay a traffic ticket. In those cases, the police won’t come looking for you, but if you’re stopped for something like speeding and they find a bench warrant was issued against you in the state’s computer, you could be taken to jail . In those circumstances, you may not have a clue that a warrant’s been issued against you.
