California Police Officer Requirements

The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training oversees the standards and requirements to become a cop in California. Although there are minimum state-wide requirements that apply to all aspiring police recruits, local police departments may impose additional standards above the minimum. For example, although a college degree may not be mandatory to become a police officer in California, many local departments may require an associates degree. As with many public sectors, although the minimum requirement may be a high school diploma or GED, college credit is seen as a strong advantage in terms of employability and promotion within law enforcement.

The minimum guidelines set by CA Post state that candidates for peace officer positions must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a US citizen, either by birth or naturalization
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate
  • Pass an extensive background investigation indicating the candidate is free of felony convictions, drug use, certain misdemeanors, etc.
  • Have no physical, emotional, or mental conditions that may interfere with police work

Filming Police Academy 7 Nearly Caused An International Incident

After the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Police Academy: Mission to Moscow became the one of the first American movies to film in the formerly communist superpower. According to the Los Angeles Times, the cast and crew of the seventh and final entry in the Police Academy series filmed in Moscow for three weeks in late 1993 without incident or trouble until the post-Soviet power vacuum led to the military storming the Russian White House and TV Center.

During this period of violent unrest, Mission to Moscow temporarily shut down, and all 52 members of the cast and crew holed up in the government-owned Financial Academy Hotel. Unable to film an airport scene because of the military situation and subsequently declared state of emergency, the cast did what they needed to do at a hastily dressed studio. The situation improved enough for an outdoor shoot at a cemetery, although the filming coincided with burials of casualties of the unrest.

But then theres the time that Russian military officials rolled up on the film crew. According to Mission to Moscow DVD featurette Underneath the Mission, Michael Winslows wireless microphone picked up otherwise secret military communications, leading to a brief, tense, and ultimately smoothed-over standoff between the army and moviemakers.

The coursework involved in a program that leads to work as a police officer can vary depending upon the institution and the degree level. For instance, those in a training academy will dive right into the nitty-gritty of everyday police work and not touch on general education requirements, such as you would find in an associate degree program. In both the associate and the bachelors program, students will encounter not only general education courses and several possible electives, but they will also focus on the core courses for police officers, such as those in criminal justice, ethics, corrections systems, communication, and more. Heres a good idea of courses you might encounter, either in the core curriculum of the degree program or at the police academy:

How Much Money Do You Make In The Police Academy

Unlike many other careers, police officers cant receive adequate training from civilian-based education, and traditional on-the-job training isnt applicable for workers in a potentially dangerous work environment. Because of this, police officers receive formal training in police methods and the criminal justice system as cadets when they attend a police academy. While most organizations hire officers and then enroll them in their academy, paying them a cadet salary as they train, some civilians self-sponsor themselves in an academy to bolster their resume.

Yes, however, it is strongly discouraged. The recruit training program is designed to be a rigorous program with challenging physical and academic requirements. The physical demands involve not only fitness training but also skills training, such as defensive tactics, firearms, and emergency vehicle operation, all of which require a high degree of stamina and concentration. The recruit training program also requires a great deal of non-academy time for homework, study, and preparation for the next training day. Similarly, please note that the goal of the academy is to prepare you for performance on the street and your career as a police officer. Retention of the knowledge and skills obtained in the academy is critical to success on the street. Insufficient rest and inadequate time to study and prepare will severely and negatively impact retention and application. As a result, due to concerns about your attentiveness and safety during the training and due to our desire that you successfully complete the training and have success as an officer, we strongly discourage working during the academy training.

Is The Police Academy Harder Than Basic Training

The short answer to this question is that it depends. This comparison largely depends on the academy youre looking at. Most police academies are known to be more difficult than basic training, but it can depend on where you study.

Basic training teaches the core skills and knowledge to succeed in a military environment. It requires hard work and determination.

    Basic military training courses include:

    • Basic military skills
    • Ethical values

Additionally, a large part of the military course is spent on fitness training.

Basic military training is a 10-week program that includes class time, field time, and physical training. With the majority of the time being spent on classwork. Basic training requires a commitment to 17-hour days, and there are no guaranteed days off during the 10-week program.
