Do Most Of Your Officers Come From Similar Backgrounds
No, the backgrounds of our officers are varied and diverse. Some of our officers have decided to proudly continue a family tradition of service. Others knew they wanted to be police officers ever since they can remember and come to the department with college degrees in Criminal Justice, although this is not required. Others have a prior military background, or have transferred to the department as a lateral hire from another agency. Still others are attracted to this career through their interactions with police officers in social work or law careers. But many of our officers have backgrounds and interests not at all related to law enforcement and have decided to go into policing as a second or third career.
Do Patrol Officers Just Respond To Dispatched Calls
As first responders, a big part of patrol is responding to 9-1-1 calls, which can range from the mundane to the truly extraordinary. Patrol officers also respond to “on-view” incidents, or a situation they see occurring. In addition, Patrol Officers get to know the area they are assigned to and the community members they serve within their beat. When not responding directly to calls, or providing backup to other officers, patrol officers use proactive time to combat on-going crime problems in specific neighborhoods.

Where Will I Be Posted During The Probationary Period
You will be attached to a metropolitan 24-hour station during your probationary period. You may elect to undertake this training at a country station which may be facilitated if there is a vacancy at that location. You will not be posted to a country station during your probationary period unless you nominate to be.
Please note upon appointment to Victoria Police you will be required to perform a range of shifts including afternoon, night shifts and weekends to meet policing and community needs.
Also, you may be required to perform duty at any location within Victoria as determined by Victoria Police.
Training And Work Environments For Reserve Officers
To work as a reserve officer, generally, you must have attended a police academy and passed the accompanying state certification or POST exam. Some agencies may require that you previously worked full time, while others may hire you as a reservist straight out of the academy.

What Reimbursement Form Do I Complete
Three different reimbursement forms may be found online.
The Basic Reimbursement form must be used for basic law enforcement or correction training when an employee becomes a full-time law enforcement officer or a full- time county correctional officer.
The Part-Time Basic Reimbursement form must be used when an employee becomes a part-time officer.
A Non-Basic Reimbursement form must be used for all other certified and reimbursable training listed in the State of Illinois Training Schedule of Board Certified Classes.

What Kind Of Shifts Will I Be Expected To Work
Victoria Police provides a 24-hour, seven day-a-week service, therefore as a Constable you will be required to work a variety of shifts associated with particular duties and locations. This includes weekends, night shifts and public holidays. The arrangement for ordinary hours of work is described in the The Victoria Police Force Enterprise Agreement 2011. The ordinary hours of work for full-time members is 80 hours per fortnight arranged within various shifts to suit service delivery needs. Intrusive hours and unsociable hours attract shift allowances for each of these hours worked.

What Is The Policy On Retaking The Power Test
In the event that a recruit officer fails to perform at the established minimum level in one or more of the four assessment areas, then he or she may not be admitted to the academy. A recruit may be given one additional retake, no more than 72 hours from the time of the initial POWER test administration. The retest consists of the failed assessment area only.
Police Community Support Officer
Although they do not have the same powers as a police officer, PCSOs play a key role on the frontline of neighbourhood policing. According to the College of Policing, the job involves:
- dealing with minor offences
- providing support to police officers
- conducting house-to-house enquiries
- guarding crime scenes
- providing crime prevention advice.
Starting salaries are typically between Â£17,500 and Â£20,000, although North Yorkshire Police states that their trainees currently earn Â£21,135, which rises to Â£23,406 with experience.
This is a uniformed role, and you’ll work shifts including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

The Metropolitan Police has announced that police constable recruits will be able to join the service on a part-time basis, becoming the first force in the UK to make such roles available.
From November, the Met will allow new recruits to complete their training doing part-time hours before hitting the streets of London on a permanent, part-time basis.
The force hopes it will make the role more attractive to those considering a career in policing who feel unable to work full-time because of family or other commitments.
Research conducted by the force has shown long working hours is one reason people feel a police constable role was not for them, and this feedback was particularly high among women.
The opportunity is open to both men and women, however, and applicants will soon be able to select from a full-time role doing 40 hours a week, part-time doing 24 hours a week, or part-time doing 16 hours a week.
