Now that you know what options there are for becoming a police officer, its important to know where they are offered. There are many schools that exist to help you move into the law enforcement career of your choice. Here are the options:

    Vocational/trade schools

These post-high school institutions focus their programs and curriculums on skill-oriented or hands-on training. Vocational and trade schools can provide the fastest way to obtain the training necessary to become a police officer and allow students to receive police academy training without attending the official police academy. Community colleges

Best for? Students who would like to earn a college degree along with their law enforcement training.

    Military

    Four-year schools

Best for? Aspiring police officers who want an extra way to stand out from the pack of applicants, as well as those looking for federal work.

    Police Academy Requirements For Education

Obtaining a high school diploma or GED equivalent is the minimum police academy requirement for education in most police academies. Many academies encourage a two year college degree from their applicants without making it a requirement. Having a college degree can give applicants an edge on acceptance to the academy. When deciding on a college major, keep in mind that police academies will be looking for relevancy to your future job. Classes focusing on criminology, legal studies, sociology and psychology are all useful for aspiring police officers.

Tips To Get Into The Police Academy

Inside the Sacramento Police Academy | The Recruits

Although the application process involves multiple steps, there are key aspects that will make it easier to get into the academy and start your career. The first step is getting a degree in criminal justice, forensics, or a related field. While you can be accepted with a high school diploma or an associates degree, a bachelors degree will improve your chances due to the higher level of training and education.

You will also want to work on your physical fitness before you start your application. You must pass the fitness exam to become a police officer or a detective. Preparing in advance will help you reach your goals by giving you the physical strength and stamina you need to pass the exam. While physical fitness standards differ for each state, you will want to be able to do pull-ups, push-ups, and related exercises. Building up your stamina by running will also help with your goals.

If you have never handled a firearm, then you may want to take a firearm safety course before entering the police academy. The training will teach you to handle a gun and prevent accidents.

Going through the police academy gives you the training you need to work as an officer and start your career in law enforcement. By taking measures to improve your chances to get into the academy, you will be able to feel confident in your abilities after you start your training.

Im working full time as a police officer right now. I know I need to get another degree to increase my chances of getting promoted within my department, but my work schedule is so varied that I dont have the ability to take classes on a set schedule.
I dont know exactly where Id like to end up as a police officer, but I do know I want the potential for advancement, to give myself the best chance of being hired and to be eligible for federal law enforcement positions, such as at the DEA or FBI.

    Prepare For The Academy

Once accepted into a police academy, you must complete a rigorous physical training schedule. Many academy cadets drop out or are released because they are unable to maintain the physical training requirements. The Los Angeles Police Department Academy recommends that applicants prepare by running continuously for at least 30 minutes daily before entering the academy. Recruits must also complete various physical activities such as pushups, situps and pullups.

    Los Angeles Police Department Information

There are over 250 different jobs for sworn officers in the LAPD.1 All LAPD officers begin their careers in patrol. The LAPD service area is comprised of 21 stations, known as areas or divisions. These stations are divided into four command areas known as bureaus. After earning experience in patrol, officers have many opportunities for advancement. These include assignments in the Detective Bureau, Counter-Terrorism, and Special Operations.

Though highly respected, the LAPD has not been without controversy. The department still operates under provisions put into place after the Rampart Division scandal in the 1990s and 2000s, in which several officers were found guilty of extreme misconduct. The reform provisions include a directive that the new Force Investigation Division investigate all use of force that the LAPD conduct regular department-wide audits and that the Ethics Enforcement Section seeks to uphold acceptable professional standards. Additionally, despite a force of 9,998 sworn officers, Los Angeles has seen rising rates of violent and other crimes over the past four years to combat the problem, the LAPD has been working to recenter its efforts on regular patrols and reassigning officers from other jobs.3
