Do I Need A Criminal Record Check Or A Vulnerable Sector Check

Different employers or institutions require different types of background checks.

A criminal record check simply verifies whether or not you have a criminal record.

A vulnerable sector check is a special type of criminal record check required for situations where you will be in a position of trust or authority over children, the elderly, the disabled, or another vulnerable group.

A vulnerable sector check involves a name-based search of the national repository of criminal convictions, a search of locally held convictions at Halifax Regional Police and a query of the pardoned sex-offender database. In some cases, you may be required to submit your fingerprints if there is a match based on either your name or a combination of your gender and date of birth to a pardoned sex offender record. Applicants with a potential match will be contacted by Halifax Regional Police and asked to come to Police Headquarters to have their fingerprints taken electronically. You can have your fingerprints taken Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Use And Usage Controversy

Criminal records may be used for many purposes, mostly for background checks, including identification, employment, security clearance, adoption, immigration/international travel/visa, licensing, assistance in developing suspects in an ongoing criminal investigation, and for enhanced sentencing in criminalprosecutions.

In the 21st century, there has been controversy about for-profit data mining companies that harvest much of the electronic booking blotter records from various police authorities nationwide and offer it free on the public Internet and for sale to employers. Though frequently effective at identifying applicants with criminal backgrounds, the mined data does not usually reflect subsequent results of any criminal prosecution, acquittal, or dismissal of charges, and the highly prejudicial nature of such records can damage applicant chances for jobs and other benefits when such records are not in proper context of subsequent prosecutorial result for a hiring manager or recruiter to evaluate. In many cases, records are available for seven years or more beyond acquittals or dismissal of charges. In addition, since arrest records can sometimes be mistakenly matched to individuals with the same or similar names, the prejudicial nature of the available records, particularly violent ones, can negatively affect applicants and candidates in a dramatic way when they otherwise have no actual criminal record.

    What Databases Are Searched

The Calgary Police Service uses three search mechanisms:

    • P.I.M.S. – Local records of the Applicant’s involvement with Calgary Police Service
    • J.O.I.N. – The Alberta court system
    • C.P.I.C. – The Canadian Police Information Centre system and R.C.M.P. National repository in Ottawa.

This Police information check only provides information found at the time of the check, on the above listed systems. The Calgary Police Service does not guarantee completeness of the information, as we are limited to information available on these systems.

This check does not include information found in any other jurisdiction’s local police information system nor does it include court information from any other provinces, except convictions registered on the National Repository for Canada and information entered onto the Canadian Police Information Centre System.

    Where To Find Police Records

How can I get my Local Police Records Check done?

First off, if you are or were a criminal and have a criminal record, you are entitled to a copy of that record thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. As stated earlier, police records are a matter of public record, therefore they are available for free access to the public. The Freedom of Information Act states that any person has the right to request access to federal agency records or information, except for exemptions that are listed. This means that anyone in the U.S. can request basic information that is considered public record, such as voter’s registration, property deeds, or criminal records.

The U.S. system of recording and storing these police records isn’t always the easiest to navigate. Records can have issues crossing state lines, which is why it’s important to find a database that checks all states and compiles the findings. A lot of people say the U.S. should make it easier and have all records in one pool, but that’s just not how things are done.

Police records are recorded in the states where such crimes occur, then are voluntarily submitted to federal databases for access. Not all crimes are recorded and submitted in this manner though, which is what leads to contrary records. With the CheckPeople search we are able to look through all sources of information quickly so you will be able to save a bunch of time on your search.

    Companies That Perform Name

Private companies that perform name-based checks do not have access to police databases. They enter into agreements with municipal police services to conduct name-based criminal record checks of the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre system. This normally includes a check of the National Repository of Criminal Records based on the applicant’s name and date of birth and may include checks of other national databanks.

Some companies may request name-based checks of other national databanks. Note, however, that not all police services contribute to these databanks, and those that do may not share all of their information.
