Police initially responded to a breaking and entering call in west Charlotte.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating an armed burglary that led to a suspect firing a shot in the presence of officers and leading an ensuing vehicle chase across the state line on Friday night.
According to CMPD, police responded to an active breaking and entering call around 9:39 p.m. in the 300 block of Tribune Drive in west Charlotte, just off of Moores Chapel Road near I-485.
Once at the scene, one of the three suspects fired one shot in the presence of officers. Review of video surveillance and interviews has led investigators to believe that the officers were not the targets of the shot.
After firing the shot, the suspect fled on foot before getting into a vehicle.
Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop on the suspect, but they refused to stop, initiating a pursuit.
The chase ended in Fort Mill after the suspect jumped out of and ran from the vehicle.
CMPD has since identified the suspect as 24-year-old Tyron Watson.
Watson is facing the following charges, although more are expected to be filed:
- Second-degree burglary
- Larceny after breaking and entering
- Felony conspiracy

None of this will stop the police from attempting to crack the code on their own. Once the police have a warrant to search your device, they are allowed to take it and use whatever means necessary to unlock it.
Two companies, Cellebrite and Grayshift, make devices that can break the encryption on mobile phones. About the size of a tablet, police plug your phone into the Gray Key and it does its thing, eventually allowing law enforcement to gain access to everything stored on the device. Not much is known about these devices, but its worth noting that not all police departments have them.

No Warrant Is Required To Search A Car
Another point on law enforcement’s side is that cars are generally excepted from the advance warrant requirement because of their mobile nature. This gives them license to conduct warrantless searches of cars.
An officer only has to meet the probable cause standard in most instances. This is relatively easy to do. Proving that an officer did not have probable cause is much more difficult and has only succeeded in a few cases. Most of those cases have involved racial profiling of some type, lack of consent, or a small exception in the public’s favor…traffic violations.
The Supreme Court ruled in Knowles v. Iowa that police cannot search a driver or passengers after ticketing them for routine traffic violations. In its decision, the Court said that a traffic violation is not an “arrest.”
Police officers’ ability to conduct searches is limited so you would not be in their custody. The probable cause argument is also diluted in this case. Ticketing you for turning right at a red light does not give an officer probable cause to search you or your car. Traffic violations are not inherently connected to any other criminal activity. This voids a claim of “reasonable suspicion” on the officer’s part.
