What Tools Do Your Locksmiths Use To Unlock Cars
Our mobile service vehicle units are fully stocked with a myriad of tools that we use to unlock our clients’ cars. Some of our most commonly used tools include:
Slim Jims
This tool is a long piece of flattened metal with a handle on the top end. While this might be a tool you may have seen in the movies, in reality, this tool takes a lot of skill to use successfully.
Wedges
Our car locksmiths use the wedge to make a gap between the car door and the car door frame. We can then reach into the car and gain access the car door lock from inside the vehicle.
Probes
This is the long, thin tool that we use in order to access the interior door locks. Our expert auto locksmith will decide when a probe is best used or avoided in your car.
Auto lockpicks
Using auto lock pick is tricky and time-consuming. It is not usually the first tool a locksmith will choose to use when unlocking your car door. It is required at times, which is why we carry it around with us at all times.
Auto Jigglers
We use auto jigglers, or tryout keys when dealing with older model vehicles. These look like toy keys because of their unusual shapes. We try to fit the right key in the car lock in order to unlock it.
Which Worked For You
Did you try out any of the methods above? Or do you know other DIY ways to unlock your car door? Let us know in the comments below!
If none of these worked for you, you could always try AAA roadside assistance if you’re a member . They usually refund you some or all of the costs if you have to call a locksmith. If you don’t have AAA, you could try calling the police or local security. Cops usually have slim jims in their vehicles, but don’t count on it helping you out is probably the least important thing on their to-do list.
If you don’t want to get locked out again, you could also invest in some magnetic key holders. Put a spare car key in there and hide it under your bumper.

Unlocking A Locked Door Through A Slim Jim
Another way to unlock your car door is to make use of a tool thats more commonly known as a slim jim. Although this kind of tool can work, it is a much more difficult task to do. There is a risk of damaging the weather stripping on the door. Additionally, there is also a risk of damaging the other wires on the door.
This method is not recommended for automatic locks or those that have automatic windows because of the presence of more wires. Its not worth taking the risk of damaging the connections just to open the door.
Here are the steps on how to do that:
1. Find a suitable Slim Jim tool
The ideal material to create this tool is a long and slim piece of metal like a hanger. The end is bent to create a hook, this is the part that goes into the door. Sometimes, the metal from the hanger isnt that sturdy. You can double it over to ensure the hook keeps its shape.
2. Insert into the door
Due to its thinness, you can insert it on the door in between the weatherstrip and the window of the passenger seat rather than the driver seat.
There are fewer wires on the passenger seat because most of the controls are found on the drivers seat.
3. Use the hook to open the lock
The locking pin is what you are aiming for with the hook. Pool the hookup ones it grips the lock. To easily find the lock, you should find the bottom edge of the window then go two inches further down.

They Might Charge You
It isnt the duty of a police officer to help you get inside of your car. Their goal is public safety, and the only time that being able to get inside of your car can be seen to fall under this job duty is when you happen to be in a dangerous situation. Being outdoors in the heat is unfortunately not considered to be dangerous, particularly when you are next to a public building and can wait inside where there is air conditioning available. So the police might charge you for the call. Also, if the police officer is unable to help you and a tow truck needs to be called, you might end up having to pay for both a truck and a police call.
How Do You Unlock A Car With A Cell Phone
Thanks to a growing number of car apps for your smartphone, you can unlock your car without breaking the bankor a window. Many new vehicles offer free Apple and Android apps that allow drivers to control their cars sans keys. If you own a new car model from Hyundai, GM/Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Ford, or Honda, install the manufacturers app for the next time your keys get locked in the car. Use Your Windshield Wiper
You can usually remove your car’s windshield wipers pretty easily, but the method differs between each car model. No matter what car you have though, a windshield wiper might save you from having to call a locksmith to open your locked car door.
First, remove the wiper from the front of your car. If your window is slightly ajar, or you can wedge the door open, you maneuver it into the interior of the car. Use the wiper to either grab the keys on the chair or hit the unlock button on the side of the door .
You can practically use anything long enough that fits through your window, but if you’re in a hurry and don’t see anything else around you that can fit through the crack, the windshield wiper is your best bet.

String Or Small Diameter Rope
If you have shoelaces, then you have the right tools for the job. This can be done with any string small enough to fit between the car door and the frame. This method will only work on cars with post locks. A post lock is an upright lock that is manipulated by being pulled up or pushed down . Once you have your string, the next thing you will need is a little information on how to tie a slip knot. Firstly, the knot needs to be as close to the center of the string as you can manage.

In this regard, what to do if car is locked with keys inside?
Here’s what you can do to stay calm and get help on the way.
How much is it to unlock a car?
On average, it costs $50 to $250 to hire a locksmith to unlock a car, depending on the services you need and the level of work involved. These prices include the cost of the service call. Use A Coat Hanger Or Slim Jim
One of the most common methods to unlock a car door is by using a modified wire coat hanger, which is a DIY slim jim. The principle is the same. This method works better for manual locking doors for automatic locks, see one of the other methods.
With the help of some pliers, unravel the coat hanger so that you have one straight side and the other hooked, which you’ll be using to pull up the control arm inside the door that’s connected to the lock rod.
Next, slide the hanger down between the car window and the weather stripping until the hook is about 2 inches below where the window and the car door meet, near the interior door handle, which is where the control arm usually is.
Rotate the hanger until the hook is facing the inside and fish around for the control arm, which isn’t always easy to find. Once you’re locked in, pull up and the car door will open.
Again, the coat hanger trick only works on certain lock mechanisms, usually on older cars, so this most likely won’t work on newer model cars. For newer cars, you can still use a coat hanger, but you’ll have to stick it in between the door and the rest of the car to unlock it from the inside.
They Might Not Be Able To Assist You
The police might be able to get the door open on your car, but they might not particularly if your car is newer and has advanced technology. At the time, they might attempt to open your car and end up damaging it. Or they might try for a short time and then give up, which just wastes your time and theirs. Or they might not try that hard and end up calling a tow truck. Then you will be out a few hundred dollars along with all of the time spent sweating in the heat.

I call no one. I hop a damn bus, head home and get a spare key. Then I bus back to my car and open it up.edit: I guess I’ll vote for ‘someone who has a spare’. |

AAA. I didn’t know there was ANYONE else to call. Also, I gotta justify that $76 a year somehow.Although, one time in High School, I did call my father because he was 10 minutes away at home, but now, there is no one else with an extra set of my keys. |
