The second, and most important, reason you need to be hit by the probes of a taser is so you have an idea of what will happen to somebody when utilizing this tool.
Recently, tasers have been elevated to a higher level of force than they once were. This means that it is now considered a more severe step in EOF procedures , and should only be deployed when somebody is an active threat to the officer.
Because of that , it is important that officers know exactly how it feels to have tasers weaponized against you.
Knowing how painful it is to be tased, youre less likely to use that force unless absolutely necessary. That feeling of empathy is precisely why it is essential to experience being tased. Knowing that pain first hand can help prevent officers from abusing the taser.
Where Will I Be Working
Patrol officers are assigned to one of our five precincts. Because of the way the city is laid out, each precinct serves a distinct area of the city and often has completely different crime issues, density and terrain.
There is no mandatory watch rotation. Once assigned to a watch, you will normally remain on that shift until you choose to change.
What Hours Will I Have To Work
Patrol Officers work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year round. Patrol officers work on a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays, and officers are assigned to one of three watches:
- First Watch: 0300-1200 or 0330 – 1230
- Second Watch: 1100-2000 or 1130 – 2030
- Third Watch: 1900-0400 or 1930 – 0430
Officers work 4 days in a row, and then have 2 days off. As a result, our officers work a little more than 40 hours in an average work week. Those extra hours are tracked and then scheduled as additional paid time off throughout the year, similar to paid vacation.

Do Most Of Your Officers Come From Similar Backgrounds
No, the backgrounds of our officers are varied and diverse. Some of our officers have decided to proudly continue a family tradition of service. Others knew they wanted to be police officers ever since they can remember and come to the department with college degrees in Criminal Justice, although this is not required. Others have a prior military background, or have transferred to the department as a lateral hire from another agency. Still others are attracted to this career through their interactions with police officers in social work or law careers. But many of our officers have backgrounds and interests not at all related to law enforcement and have decided to go into policing as a second or third career.

Effective immediately, in an effort to prevent the introduction of COVID-19 into academy training facilities and minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for academy class members and staff, the following procedures are implemented.
COVID-19 Testing Required: All students enrolled in an academy session are required to be tested for COVID-19 prior to reporting to the academy for the beginning of training. The protocol for this testing/reporting procedure is as follows:

Step : Interview With The Academy Manager
After completing the above steps, your chosen academy will contact you to schedule an appointment for an interview with the Academy Manager. This should be considered a formal interview, so please dress accordingly. The Academy Manager will determine the candidates demeanor and suitability to become a certified Peace Officer in the State of Georgia.
Option Three: Obtain A Waiver Of Further Training
Officers may apply to the Kansas Commission on Peace Officer’s Standards and Training for a waiver of further training. The Commission may grant a waiver to those officers who, in the opinion of the Executive Director of police training, has received sufficient training or experience that such hours of instruction at the training center would be, unless waived, unduly burdensome or duplicative.
Officers seeking such waivers must show extraordinary circumstances such as being so closely involved with law enforcement during the period they were not active officers that they remain familiar with contemporary law enforcement procedures to obtain a waiver of training.

Do Patrol Officers Just Respond To Dispatched Calls
As first responders, a big part of patrol is responding to 9-1-1 calls, which can range from the mundane to the truly extraordinary. Patrol officers also respond to “on-view” incidents, or a situation they see occurring. In addition, Patrol Officers get to know the area they are assigned to and the community members they serve within their beat. When not responding directly to calls, or providing backup to other officers, patrol officers use proactive time to combat on-going crime problems in specific neighborhoods.
What To Bring: Clothing:
For class at a minimum wear a business shirt, tie, pants and black business shoes. This is perfectly fine, and to be honest you dont need to go out and buy suits as most people dont wear them after the first week. Maybe have one suit just in case.PT navy shorts cut above the knee, navy shirt, joggers. navy tracksuit for the cold days. Dont stress if they have a small logo on them, its fine.After class most clothing is fine such as jeans, t-shirts, shirts etc. Just nothing with stupid things written on it, or for the ladies nothing too provocative. And you are supposed to wear shoes in the mess but they didnt really care about thongs etc on the weekends. Stationary buy whatever works for you. I just used a folder for each subject, and just took one writing pad to most classes. Get used to using black pens. No one really uses laptops in class, unless you want to stick out. Linen Its supplied at the college, but you can use your own if you prefer. A laptop/printer not 100% necessary, but it sure makes it a hell of a lot easier. I also had Optus wireless internet, which is fairly cheap and is very convenient, rather than having to go to the library. $2 coins for the washings machines and dryers

General Information On How To Become A Law Enforcement Officer
The following information outlines the process by which a candidate may become licensed as a law enforcement officer in the state of Michigan.
Licensing as a law enforcement officer in Michigan must be approved through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards . This happens when the following two requirements are met by the candidate: compliance with MCOLES minimum selection standards which includes satisfactory completion of a basic police academy or recognition of prior training and experience, and employment with a law enforcement agency as a law enforcement officer. Previously licensed police officers in Michigan, or from another state, who are seeking re-licensure are directed to the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.
Basic recruit training, which is the major component of the pre-employment standards, must be completed at an approved training academy. Regional training academies are located throughout the state. All training academies are required to teach, as a minimum, the state’s basic training curriculum, which is 594 hours in length. At the completion of the academy, all graduates are required to pass a licensing examination administered by the state.
There are three ways to enter a basic training academy:
Once all of the pre-enrollment standards have been met, including basic training, a candidate’s license may be activated through MCOLES by being sworn in as a law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency.
Option One: Challenge Procedure
PASS A CHALLENGE EXAMINATION DEVELOPED BY THE KANSAS LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING CENTER AND QUALIFY WITH A DUTY HANDGUN
Officers choosing this option must pass a written examination covering contemporary law enforcement procedures, law, and tactics with a minimum score of 70%. KLETC will develop and administer the examination and will make available to officers comprehensive study materials via Blackboard link in advance of the test date. Officers who pass the academic examination must then qualify at the KLETC Firearms Range with their duty handgun. A minimum qualification score of 70% is required.
The material covered in the online classes are a preparation for onsite written testing and firearms qualification on prescribed dates at KLETC. Step : Background Investigation
All Peace Officer candidates must undergo a thorough background investigation which includes a drug test. When directed by the academy staff, Pre-Service Candidates should contact Professional Screening and Information . The current cost for the PSI background investigation for Pre-Service Candidates is $245.00 and is payable online. Contact your academy of choice to obtain the organization code and Chain of Custody form, when applicable, for the drug test. Once completed, the PSI background investigation results will be forwarded to the chosen academy.

Basic Training General Information
CHECK-IN and ORIENTATION:Students must check-in between 7:15 – 7:45 AM on the first day of class. Students need to be in their assigned classroom no later than 8:00 AM. Lunch will be provided. Orientation consists of an introduction to KLETC equipment issue, rules and regulations, a firearms safety lecture, and their classroom and dorm room assignment.
ONLINE TRAINING ACCESS:Some agencies require their officers to take online classes from our Professional Development program before coming to KLETC. Each officer who takes an online class has been assigned a special username starting with kuce_ and will have established a password for that account. If a student has such an account, they need to have the account log-in information available during orientation. If a student has not created an account previously, one will be created during orientation.
LOCATION:KLETC is located twelve miles southeast of Hutchinson south of K-96 near Yoder, Kansas. The GPS address is 11009 South Hornet Road, Hutchinson, Kansas 67501.
DORMITORY REQUIREMENT:Students attending KLETC must reside in the student dormitory unless authorized to commute by the KLETC Associate Director.
UNIFORM/CLOTHING POLICY:Uniforms must be worn during classroom sessions. If uniforms are unavailable, the agency head must provide a written explanation to the KLETC Associate Director. Blue jeans or T-shirts are not permitted during classroom sessions.

Basic Law Enforcement Officer Education
The Walters State Basic Law Enforcement Officer Education is an intensive nine week, 494hour course of instruction on basic law enforcement. Upon completion of the academy the student will be awarded the Technical Certificate in Basic Law Enforcement Officer Education and is eligible to apply for certification by theTennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission as a certified peace officer in the state of Tennessee after being employed by a law enforcement agency.
Academy students are required to live at the academy Sunday night through Friday afternoon. During the academy the average day for a student starts at 5:30 AM and does not end until 10:30 PM Monday through Friday.

How Long Is The Training Process Before I’m On Patrol
ENTRY-LEVEL
The Basic Law Enforcement Academy is approximately 4.5-months . Recruits are NOT housed at the academy and will be responsible for their own housing.
Upon graduation from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy you will become a Student Officer. You will spend approximately 4 weeks at the Seattle Police Department Advanced Training Unit in Post-BLEA. You will learn the laws specific to the City of Seattle, department policy and procedures and services specific to Seattle.
After completing advanced training, you will enter the Field Training Program, with an experienced officer who will evaluate your performance in the patrol division.
LATERAL-ENTRY
All certified law enforcement officers from outside of the State of Washington must take and pass the 2 week Police Officer Equivalency Academy administered by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
While attending the equivalency academy, you will also learn Seattle Municipal Laws, policies, procedures, and services specific to Seattle. This will be followed by Field Training for Lateral Officers.
Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy
I am pleased to announce the phased reopening of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and POST Commission facilities. As you are all aware, current health concerns are compounded by the realities of a large residential law enforcement academy. In order to reopen as responsibly as possible, Governor Lee has approved us to begin training in very limited groups.
Please note that all students will undergo initial Covid-19 testing and periodic screening thereafter. Students attending Specialized classes will be required to reside on campus and will not be permitted to leave campus until the completion of training. Students attending POST Transition School or Basic Law Enforcement School will be required to reside on campus and will not be permitted to leave campus during the training week. They will be allowed to return to their homes on weekends but will be retested or screened upon their return for the next weeks training.

The Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy was authorized by the 1963 General Assembly for the purpose of training state, county and city law enforcement officers. The Academy was brought under the Department of Safety in 1983.

2021 CERTIFICATION TRAINING CURRICULUM:
The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission has adopted a revised training curriculum for the Basic certification training program. The 2021 basic academy curriculum is now 560 hours and is scheduled to be taught over a 14-week period.
The 2021 curriculum for the Lateral/Refresher program has been expanded from 95 hours to 120 hours and will be taught over a three-week period.
The 2021 academy training schedules have been adjusted to reflect the required curriculum. There is no increase in academy tuition for 2021.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION REQUIRED FOR ALL APPLICANTS:
The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission has amended the Alabama Administrative Code , RULE 650-X-2-.04 PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS, to require all academy applicants, both basic and lateral/refresher applicants, to submit to a psychological evaluation conducted by a Licensed Behavioral Health Professional. This requirement is effective with all applications submitted to the Commission on or after January 1, 2021. The Commission adopted APOST Form Number 3B, Psychological Evaluation, which is required to be submitted with each application. The complete text of the regulation is attached and can also be found on the APOSTC website.
