The Duties Of A Reserve Police Officer

A reserve police officers requirements and duties vary significantly, depending on the venue and location of their service.

Some have full powers of operation similar to a regular police official, but in other instances they have limited duties and authority.

In some departments, the reserve police are uniformed in the same way as regular law enforcement officers, but dont carry weapons or make arrests. Their duties may only include doing office work, community relations, traffic control and issuing warrants and subpoenas.

Its common in beachside locations that have a huge increase in population in the summer months to hire a reserve police officer team on a seasonal basis to help with law enforcement. Also, reserve officers can serve at things such as state fairs, parades and other large events.

Often, a reserve police officer is a law enforcement trainee whos required to perform a certain number of hours in this capacity in order to complete training requirements.

Sometimes, a reserve police officer is a retired police-person who wants to give back to the community on a part-time basis.

Other times, people who are thinking of a career in law enforcement use this as an opportunity to find out whether they are suited to the job. This way, they dont have to invest as much training and educational time to a career they arent sure about. They do, however, have to participate in some police training in preparation to perform their duties as a reserve police officer.

Age Might Be Just A Number

Your age at the time of application is far less important for a majority of departments than whether you can physically perform the job. You’re ahead of the game regardless of your age if you’re in good shape and can demonstrate that you can handle the physical rigors that a police officer is likely to encounter on the job.

Check with departments you’d like to work for to make sure there aren’t any age restrictions. Some, such as the New York State Police and the federal governmentdo have maximum age limits. But you can likely find a department near you that will hire you at any age if you meet the other qualifications because there are so many law enforcement agencies within the U.S.

How Can I Prepare Myself To Be A Strong Candidate

In addition to obtaining a college degree, and of course staying out of trouble, future applicants can help themselves out in various ways. Jim Dudley perhaps said it best during a podcast on the subject, so I’ll let him explain.

For starters, he says, “volunteer in your community. Do things where you have responsibility, visible responsibility, and get out there and start cultivating your capability to be a public servant.”

Young people should also consider sports, not only because “healthy cops are good cops, but furthermore, youre going to learn team building.”

“Im a big fan of scouting” as well, he said. “It teaches you structure, it teaches you working through a rank system. It teaches you service.”

Youth explorer programs are also great places to start.

And perhaps most importantly, says Dudley, “talk to cops, talk to police officers, ask them what the job is about.”

What If It Was Alcohol Dui

I am a Police Officer

If the substance that you consumed was alcohol, your chances to become a police officer are still there. If you qualify for the interview during the selection process, the officer who is taking your interview will ask you several questions. If you give satisfactory answers to your conduct, he might give you a cleat chit.

Some questions which you might expect during the interview are:

When did the offense take place?

Was it your first Dui?

Did you cause injury or death to someone while you were under the influence?

Was your car insured?

Did you cause damage to the property of people? If so, did you pay for those damages?

Do you think you need to drink regularly?

Your eligibility for the police department depends on these questions. So, be prepared for them and think of some reasonable answers to these questions you can give to the interviewer.

General Information On How To Become A Law Enforcement Officer

The following information outlines the process by which a candidate may become licensed as a law enforcement officer in the state of Michigan.

Licensing as a law enforcement officer in Michigan must be approved through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards . This happens when the following two requirements are met by the candidate: compliance with MCOLES minimum selection standards which includes satisfactory completion of a basic police academy or recognition of prior training and experience, and employment with a law enforcement agency as a law enforcement officer. Previously licensed police officers in Michigan, or from another state, who are seeking re-licensure are directed to the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.

Basic recruit training, which is the major component of the pre-employment standards, must be completed at an approved training academy. Regional training academies are located throughout the state. All training academies are required to teach, as a minimum, the state’s basic training curriculum, which is 594 hours in length. At the completion of the academy, all graduates are required to pass a licensing examination administered by the state.

There are three ways to enter a basic training academy:

Once all of the pre-enrollment standards have been met, including basic training, a candidate’s license may be activated through MCOLES by being sworn in as a law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency.
