I Called About An Incident Why Can’t I Find My Incident Listed Here

How to get your police report through a Freedom of Information request with Robyn Doolittle

There are three possible reasons for this.

  • The incident may not involve one of the four crime types Burglaries, Robberies, Aggravated Assaults, and Homicides being posted online.

  • The incident involves one of these four crimes, however, there has not been enough time to prepare it for posting. Please check again a little later.

  • Not all incidents will result in a Seattle Police Report being filed. For example, the incident may involve a location that cannot be found or verified.

  • If you would like to request a report that is not listed here, you may complete and submit a Public Disclosure Request.

How Do I Get Police Records

The fastest and most convenient way to get police records is to do a search through the SpyFly search platform. All you have to do is type in some basic information, then be prepared to get tons of information. Other ways that you might be able to obtain police records is to:

    • Request the records from the police station
    • File for record information through the county court
    • Request the federal government for police records

Any time you request information from a government facility, they will have you fill out paperwork and pay the requested fees. It can take months, even years, to get the information.

How Do I Check For Outstanding Local Warrants

Anyone can check for an outstanding local warrant using the following steps:

  • You can check your local courts website if you know the location or original county of the arrest.
  • Go to the local courts website.
  • Type the name of the person if the court website has a search feature.
  • It is important to know as much information about the person you are searching for an outstanding warrant so that they can be properly identified in the public records when dealing with a specific court.
  • If you cant find this information, then a phone call to the local court directly will be necessary.
  • Ask the court clerk if there is an outstanding warrant for the individual.
  • Again, have as much information as possible about the individual, such as the individuals birth date and any relevant case numbers or arrest records.
  • If you do not have all this information or find the court difficult to work with you can easily use SpyFlys Outstanding Warrant Search tool. This also may be less cumbersome than dealing with a local court and their public record systems. Additionally SpyFly will search all warrants for the entire state, which is helpful if you do not know the court where the specific warrant is being held.

    Police Department Request Form

If you cannot submit a police report request online or through the mail, then you will have to visit the police department in person and file a request there. Call beforehand since some departments only allow in-person requests on certain days. You can find your local police department here. Then you can find out about filling out a Police Department Request Form in person and how to get the information you need. Typically these police department request forms can be fulfilled that day.

    Police Report Vs Police Record

First, lets clarify something that is bound to cause some confusion: the difference between a police report and a police record. While these two items have similar names, they are in fact very different. A police report is a document filed by a police officer that essentially offers a summary of an arrest, incident, or accident. A police record, on the other hand, is usually the same as a criminal record and it includes a list and summary of an individuals history of interactions with law enforcement, including arrests and convictions.

Another point that deserves clarification is the difference between a police report and an accident report. In fact, theres not really a difference between these two items. An accident report is simply a type of police report that details the circumstances of a traffic accident. A police report, meanwhile, can include accident reports, but they cover a much broader range of incidents that may involve the police, including crimes. Note that some police departments call police reports incident reports. Remember that some accident reports may also be criminal reports, such as if the accident may have been caused by drunk driving.

How To Get A Police Report About Yourself

Most people see their first police report after they are involved in a motor vehicle accident. The investigating officer talks to witnesses and writes down information at the scene. Usually, the officer provides you with a receipt that contains the identification number of the report. That number makes it easy to order a copy of the police report from the local law enforcement agency that responded to the scene of the incident. You will likely have to pay an administrative fee for it. If you want it free, you can get a copy from your insurance company, assuming it obtains one.

If you were arrested and want the arrest report, request one from the main office of the police department that was involved in the arrest. Go to the agency’s website or the city or county website for information about how to get one. You may find that parts of the report are not available to you. Some material is considered confidential, which may include informant’s names, testimony, names of witnesses or undercover law enforcement officers. This is particularly true in criminal cases involving rape or sexual abuse.

You may not be able to obtain a report at all if the investigation is considered to be ongoing. But once it is completed, and charges are filed against you, your attorney can get the report from the district attorney’s office or from the prosecutor. Read More:Police Report Types

How to report videos to the Met London Police

Police reports can be looked up by case number by contacting either the police department making the report, or the court where the case is pending, according to Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara. Each state has different practices regarding police report availability and what information is necessary to look them up.

Crime victims need to contact the local police agency directly to get a copy of the police report, Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara advises. If the person requesting the police report is not the victim or the defendant in the case, a copy of the police report is obtained from the court using the case number. If a case number is not available, the courts website provides directions on how to obtain it. For an accident occurring in Santa Clara County, the court says to contact the investigating agency for a copy of the police report.

In Indianapolis, copies of police reports are obtained through the citizen services desk at police headquarters, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Its website also gives a link to online access to Indianapolis police reports, which can be searched by case number. Like many other police departments and courts, Indianapolis charges a fee for providing copies of reports.

    What Is A Police Report

    Ben Roethlisberger

When police officers show up at an accident or other incident, they summarize the facts and their opinions in a written report called a police report. The types of reports include arrest reports and crime, or incident, reports. These incident reports usually detail police responses to citizen calls for assistance in situations like motor vehicle accidents.

Police reports are not part of the court records, and so they are not necessarily public documents. While you are entitled in most jurisdictions to obtain a copy of a police report involving yourself, you cannot count on getting police reports that involve other people. Exact laws and procedures vary among jurisdictions.

Due to the sensitive information included in the reports, SFPD protocol requires in-person identification verification. Victims or their designated representatives must either submit their request in-person or pick-up their incident report in person at CISU Records Management. For a list of acceptable forms of identification, please refer to Section 2 of the Request for Police Report: Family Code § 6228 form.

Why Are These The Only Crimes Shown

With the Police Reports Map and 9-1-1 Response Map, SPD is making almost all of our reports available online. The Department attempted to be very thoughtful about what information was released and what was not. These decisions were not made to “hide” types of crimes from the public, instead decisions were made about who to protect.

The only reports that are not being released under this system are when the rights of the victim, age of the victim, possibility of revictimization or overall public safety/security issues take clear precedence over the public right to know.

Information on Rape and other sexual offenses, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Kidnapping, Suicides, locations that are sensitive , Homeland Security issues and tactical information that might compromise the safety of our officers are not being released in this system.

If the event is one of the many types we do show, but the location code was entered into the system incorrectly, the location of the event cannot then be verified. In this scenario, this particular event will not appear on the map at all, rather than providing possibly misleading information.

    Where To Find Police Records

First off, if you have a criminal record, you are entitled to a copy of that record as a result of the Freedom of Information Act. As stated earlier, police records are a matter of public record, therefore members of the public can access them. The Freedom of Information Act states that any person has the right to request access to federal agency records or information, except for exemptions that are listed. This means that anyone in the U.S. can request basic information that is considered public record, such as marriage records, voter’s registration or criminal records.

While prison records are public record, the system of recording and storing these police records in the U.S. isn’t always the easiest to navigate. Records can have issues crossing state lines, which is why it’s important to find a database that checks all 50 states and compiles the findings for you. A lot of people believe the U.S. should have all criminal records in one place, but that’s not the way it works.

Police records are recorded in the state the crime occurred in from there they are voluntarily submitted to federal databases for access. Not all crimes are recorded and submitted to federal databases, which is what leads to contrary records. With the With SpyFly we search through national, state and municipal databases so you will get complete results, fast.
