Answer tips:

Here is an opportunity for you to showcase a wide variety of things you may have done both personally and professionally that will get your potential employers interested. Be sure to think about this one in advance in the event that it comes up.

Keep in mind, one of the key things that employers look for is an applicant who is self motivated and goal oriented.

Even if you dont have something that is specific to the role you are applying for, dont be afraid to list hobbies or other non-work related activities here. Again, this shows your employer you are the go-getter they are looking for.

In the end, you want to ensure that you are leaving your interviewer with the impression that you are motivated, self sufficient, and manage your time effectively.

That is a really great question. While I havent had the opportunity to develop within this particular role per se, I have actually become very involved in my local foodbank this year. This has taught me a great deal about community, teamwork, and taking initiative.

I took it upon myself to enroll in a summer business admin course at the local community college. Through this, I picked up some really great knowledge on communication and teamwork, as well as further develop overall managerial skills. Though it may not be directly applicable to this particular job, I believe the overall experience I gained could be a real asset here.

What If I Am Asked To Meet With Officers For A Counter

You have the right to say that you do not want to be interviewed, to have an attorney present, to set the time and place for the interview, to find out the questions they will ask beforehand, and to answer only the questions you feel comfortable answering. If you are taken into custody for any reason, you have the right to remain silent. No matter what, assume that nothing you say is off the record. And remember that it is a criminal offense to knowingly lie to an officer.

Why Are You The Best Police Officer For This Position

This question is one way employers can learn more about your skills and talents as a police officer. They are looking for someone who is knowledgeable about the law and is willing to put in the hard work this position requires. In your answer, explain two or three reasons you are a good fit for this role. Think about which skills helped you successfully get through your police officer training.

Example:”As the valedictorian of my program, I understand the importance of knowing policies and procedures. By following the rules, I can protect my community members, my colleagues and myself. Another thing I can offer is my tireless work ethic. Even when working long night shifts, I will always be attentive to detail and make sure I am following your department’s rules and regulations. “

When Youre Pulled Over

As noted above, police officers may ask a few questions after pulling you over in your car. Often, these questions are designed to get you to admit to traffic violations other than the one that caused the stop in the first place. And just like in the scenario above you dont need to provide answers.

But there are other requests that traffic officers can make that you must comply with. Because driving without a license, registration, or insurance is a crime, cops may ask for your drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance. Failing or refusing to provide these documents can result in a traffic citation or even arrest.

And if youre thinking of invoking your Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to keep that info to yourself, think again: That right only applies to testimonial evidence, and official documents like licenses and registration dont qualify.

Fabricating information and providing vague details that will get him or her out of trouble as quickly as possible is an indicator

William Shakespeare, in “As You Like It,” wrote, All the worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely players.

Each of us plays a role. Some of them are easy to identify. For example, Im a husband, a dad, a son, a brother, a friend, a cop, a writer and a financial coach. Sometimes, the roles blend together and occupy space at the same time. Other times, Im 100 percent depending on the situational needs or desires.

In my role as a cop, part of my job is defining other peoples roles in any give situation, and those roles can change at the drop of a hat. They are constantly in flux. One second I may be talking to a domestic violence victim, but as soon as the handcuffs go on the suspect, the victim may take on the role of the aggressor toward me because Im taking their spouse to the hoosegow.

Thats one of the biggest challenges in being a cop. Not only do we have to identify potential threats, but we have to constantly reassess previously identified roles. One of the secrets Ive learned involves a specific role: the shady subject.

Where are you headed?Be prepared for another vague answer. Responses like, down the way, or home or my other friends house are not uncommon. If youre quick on the uptake, youll notice that last one can easily lead back down the rabbit hole of the abovementioned items.

I Loaned Something To A Friend But They Have Not Given It Back

The refusal to give something back which has been borrowed is not automatically theft. In some cases it might have to be resolved using the Civil Courts and you may need to see a solicitor for advice.

If you have a problem with someone who has borrowed your property and has not given it back, keep a record of all the occasions you have asked for it and then ask a solicitor to send a formal letter asking for the return of the property.

If the property is still not returned, you may be able to justify making a complaint of theft to the police.

Where Are You Coming From

This question seems innocent, but its a critical part of the investigative process. Officers want to know where people are coming from so they can draw conclusions about their whereabouts.

Suppose an officer has a hunch that someone is intoxicated, if the person says they are coming from brunch, a bar, or a club, you can now expect the cop to be on high alert. Historically speaking, having a cop think youre guilty isnt good for your case or your traffic stop.

If You Inadvertently Dial 9

  • Stay on the phone and advise the call taker that you mistakenly dialed 9-1-1 and that you do not have an emergency.
  • If a 9-1-1 call is abruptly disconnected, the call taker will attempt to call the number back.
  • If a caller does not confirm whether or not there is an emergency, police may be dispatched to the location from which the call was made.
  • To prevent inadvertent calls to 9-1-1, keep phones out of reach of toddlers and small children.
  • Use your phone wisely. Responding to unnecessary calls needlessly burdens the emergency call taker and the system, leaving the call taker unavailable for true emergencies.

Fifty Questions To Ask Your Local Police Department About Race

writer, teacher, producer, traveler, activist

In the aftermath of the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, here are 50 questions I have for my local police department. Feel free to ask yours the same questions.

To the Commissioner of My Local Police Department,

I am concerned for the safety of our community’s African-American residents and for all people of color who are disproportionate targets of police violence. I am writing to examine what protocols if any you have in place to ensure that this type of egregious police violence does not occur here.

Specifically, I would like to know the following:

What type of race sensitivity training do your officers have to undergo? Is this mandatory for all officers? Are officers provided ongoing and up-to-date statistics on police violence vs. minorities? Is the feeling among officers that this type of training is valuable or does it provoke further resentment by being cast as part of the culture of ‘political correctness’? In other words, do your senior officers truly believe race sensitivity training is necessary and do they reflect this attitude to the rest of the department? What do you do with officers who crack jokes or exhibit signs of irreverence during race sensitivity training? Are they disciplined?

When Do I Have To Provide Some Information To The Police

An Anonymous Cop Is Here to Answer All Your Questions ...

As previously mentioned, there are certain situations where an individual may be required to provide particular information or answer specific questions.

One of those scenarios is when the police have reasonable suspicion that a person either is or is about to be participating in some kind of criminal activity.

For example, in many states it is often the case that if the police see a person wandering aimless with no apparent direction and in way that poses a threat to the public , then they are allowed to ask the supposed loiterer for their identification as well as an explanation of what they are doing.

The laws that govern this exception are known as stop and identify laws. Currently, these laws have been adopted by approximately 24 states.

Lastly, while declining to answer questions is generally not considered a crime, refusing to provide identification when pulled over due to a traffic violation can be a crime.
