Police Powers To Take Finger Prints And Body Samples In Custody

Full Body Camera Video – Man accused of impersonating a police officer in Whitehall

If you’ve been arrested, the police will usually take your fingerprints, and might take palm prints or other impressions. Other samples can also be taken using reasonable force if a police inspector provides permission, such as:

  • saliva swabbed from inside the mouth.
  • body hair samples, other than pubic hair
  • nail clippings
  • samples from under the nail
  • blood swabs or other body tissue or fluid gained by swabbing or rubbing.

The police can only take blood samples from the vein if they have a warrant.

If you’re convicted, your prints and impressions will be kept with your criminal record. Otherwise, in most cases, your prints and impressions will be destroyed. However, your prints or impressions can be held for up to 2 years where you have accepted an alternative to prosecution in court, for example a fine or work order.

Illinois Police Jobs Outlook

For those interested in pursuing law enforcement careers in Illinois, there is a lot of promise. Statewide, Illinois cops earn an average annual salary of $73,870, and the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights metro division has the third-highest average law enforcement salary in the US, at $79,690 per year.1 The projected jobs growth through 2026 for Illinois cops is 4.1%, with an anticipated average of 2,380 job openings every year.8

A large part of the growth expected is due to population growth. Another expected driver of police hiring in the coming years is the number of baby boomer veteran police officers who will be retiring. This situation is expected to result in a high number of replacement hirings. However, as with most public service jobs, employment cycles are dependent on state and city budgets.

The traditional route into policing was to apply directly to one of the country’s police forces, follow the Initial Police Learning and Development Programme by completing a two-year probation period before becoming a police constable. This training contributed towards passing your Diploma in Policing.

While the IPLDP is currently being phased out, some forces still allow entry to the programme, with this path open to both graduates and non-graduates alike.

However, to ensure consistent standards across the UK’s forces, the College of Policing has worked with chief constables to create a new system of entry according to the policing education qualifications framework that reflects modern policing techniques and the use of digital data in investigations.

Three routes are now available:

Whichever of these three options you choose, you’ll hold a degree-level qualification in professional policing by the time you’ve completed your probationary period.

    Can You Refuse A Lawyer

Most adults can agree to be interviewed without a lawyer but it is not in your best interests. The police will take a note of why you chose not to have a lawyer. The police shouldn’t try to influence your decision whether to have a lawyer.

Some people can only be interviewed with a lawyer present:

    • children under 16 years of age
    • young people with a compulsory supervision order aged 16 or 17
    • vulnerable adults – 16 years or older who may not understand what is happening or be able to communicate with the police because of a mental health condition or learning disability.

16 and 17 year olds who are not vulnerable or under a compulsory supervision order will need the consent of a parent or another adult if they want to be interviewed without a lawyer.

You can change your mind and choose to have a lawyer at any time.
