Texas Trooper Or Highway Patrol Requirements

Texas has approximately 225,544 miles of rural highways and the state depends on the Texas Highway Patrol to patrol those highways.2 The THP has over 2,100 commissioned officers and is divided into seven regions and 19 districts.2 In order to be eligible for a Texas state trooper position, prospective officers must satisfy state requirements and:

• Be 21 years old upon graduation from the departments law enforcement academy
• Have at least 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university*
• Have uncorrected vision at the following levels: 20/40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other eye, 20/30 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye or 20/20 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye.

Training for the Texas Highway Patrol takes place at the Departments Law Enforcement Education Academy. The curriculum is made up of intense physical and academic classes across a span of 28 weeks. Troopers are paid a base salary of $55,481 per year while in training, $60,613 upon swearing-in, and $73,208 after a 12-month field training probation period, with regular increases thereafter.2 Note that the basic schedule for Texas state troopers assumes a 50-hour work week as the standard.

Fort Worth Police Officer Terminated Following Off

FORT WORTH – A Fort Worth Police officer was terminated today after an internal investigation into an off-duty conduct incident from Oct. 2021 found he allegedly left the scene of an accident and fired his gun while drunk.

A FWPD spokesperson said that Corporal Marshall Meyer had been on vacation in Hot Springs Village in Arkansas when the incident occurred.

Meyer allegedly became intoxicated and left the scene of an accident involved he was involved in. The spokesperson did not elaborate about the nature of the accident or how Mayer was involved.

According to the spokesperson, Meyer also allegedly fired his gun in place where firearms were prohibited.

After the incident, Meyer was placed on restricted duty during the course of the investigation, removing his police powers.

When the investigation and subsequent review were completed, Meyer’s off-duty conduct was determined to not be “in keeping with the high standards expected of a Fort Worth police officer, and unjustly reflects upon the rest of our officers who maintain those standards every day and work hard to ensure the safety of our community.”

Sandy Reyes said Wednesday their family was not prepared for the nightmare as her husband tried to seek help for his PTSD.

“This is what officers are afraid of if they go seek help,” Sandy Reyes said, referring to the hurdles officers face when they seek mental help. “Recruits need to know about this. I’m sure my husband is not the only one going through this.”

A Fort Worth police officer remained jailed Wednesday after he was charged with tampering or fabricating physical evidence, according to court and jail records.

Sgt. Rodsdricke Martin, 46, was arrested Tuesday after a Tarrant County grand jury indicted him ona charge of tampering or fabricating physical evidence with the intent to impair, according to court records. It is unclear if he has an attorney.Martin was previously placed on restrictive duty from the force.

Fort Worth police previously said they received a complaint in January alleging that Martin attempted to destroy evidence while working in an off-duty capacity. Police did not detail what evidence Martin was accused of trying to destroy or when the complaint alleged that the incident occurred.

The department said in February that Martin was placed on restricted duty and stripped of all police powers amid administrative and criminal investigations. Police said in a news release Wednesday that before his arrest, Martin was placed on unpaid suspension as an administrative investigation wrapped up.

The grand jury indicted Martin on Friday and a warrant was issued for his arrest Tuesday, according to court records.
