Dallas Police Officer Requirements
Like many other major cities, Dallas requires that prospective police officers take a Civil Service Written test. The exam is offered monthly. Candidates must meet various other basic prerequisites. All applicants must:
- Be a US citizen
- Be at least 19 years and six months old at the time of application, and between the ages of 21 and 44 at the time of hire
- Hold a valid drivers license
- Have earned at least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university OR have served at least three years in the military with an honorable discharge
- Have a vision in each eye of at least 20/100
- Not have any pending court cases
- Not have more than three hazardous traffic violations in the past 24 months
- Comply with the DPDs tattoo policy
After completing the above steps and qualifications, the next step for joining the law enforcement team in Dallas is to have a preliminary screening interview. Then, applicants must pass a board interview with DPD police officers and supervisors. Following the interviews, a polygraph, psychological and medical exam, and a background check will be performed. Next, a physical test will be administered, which includes a bench press, run, sit-ups, and push-ups. Upon passing these evaluations, candidates may be invited to attend the 35-week police academy, for which they will be paid, followed by 24 weeks of field training.

How To Start The Application Process

Qualified applicants will be required to pass a variety of entrance and qualification examinations, including a physical fitness test. Applicants will then complete an in-depth personal history application, and undergo a background investigation, interviews, and related examinations. When hired, police cadets will attend a certified police academy. Upon completion of the Academy, the officer must pass a State Licensing Exam. All officers undergo an extensive Field Training Program to prepare for their duties as a new officer.

Texas Trooper Or Highway Patrol Requirements
Texas has approximately 225,544 miles of rural highways and the state depends on the Texas Highway Patrol to patrol those highways.2 The THP has over 2,100 commissioned officers and is divided into seven regions and 19 districts.2 In order to be eligible for a Texas state trooper position, prospective officers must satisfy state requirements and:
- Be 21 years old upon graduation from the departments law enforcement academy
- Have at least 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university*
- Have uncorrected vision at the following levels: 20/40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other eye, 20/30 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye or 20/20 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye.
*Applicants with prior law enforcement or military experience may substitute experience for required semester hours.
Training for the Texas Highway Patrol takes place at the Departments Law Enforcement Education Academy. The curriculum is made up of intense physical and academic classes across a span of 28 weeks. Troopers are paid a base salary of $55,481 per year while in training, $60,613 upon swearing-in, and $73,208 after a 12-month field training probation period, with regular increases thereafter.2 Note that the basic schedule for Texas state troopers assumes a 50-hour work week as the standard.

Assignment And Field Training
Upon successful completion and graduation from a Regional Training Academy or upon hiring of a lateral police officer, the new officer will be assigned to a shift and a Field Training Officer . The new officer will then undergo approximately three months of training with the FTO. The FTO assists the officer with the final phase of his or her training by observing and evaluating the new officer’s progress and performance on a daily basis.
If the new officer successfully completes the Field Training and Evaluation Program, he or she is then assigned to a shift and placed on regular status.

The Dallas Police Basic Training Academy is 36 weeks long, with 1,431 hours of instruction.2 The academy is broken up into three phases. Topics covered include defensive driving, code of conduct, fitness, defensive tactics, and Spanish. The DPD recommends that candidates arrive at the academy in peak physical fitness as the curriculum includes intense physical training and conditioning. Following graduation from the police academy, new officers are assigned to a patrol division where they will be partnered with a Field Training Officer for a further 24 weeks of field training.
