We all want to be comfortable and secure when we retire. And dogs that spend their lives working, whether in the military, law enforcement or security, deserve the same thing. Fortunately, there are organizations that help these hard-working dogs find loving homes for their golden years.
For example, the Transportation Security Administration has a canine adoption program to place its retired dogs in good homes. Mission K9 Rescue is another organization that helps to facilitate adoptions of retired military working dogs, also known as MWDs. These intelligent animals are trained by members of the 341st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and then deployed to Department of Defense units around the world. They are commonly used to detect drugs and explosives.
The retired dogs available for adoption are usually between 10 and 12 years old, and common breeds include German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, Belgian malinois and springer spaniels. Younger dogs that did not meet training standards may also be available for adoption.
Every MWD, when theyre retiring, they do a behavioral test and an adoption test to make sure theyre not going to be food aggressive or bite a small child or chase the mailman down the street, Air Force Chief Petty Officer Jason Silvis told VetStreet.com. We do a wide variety of tests before we decide that the dogs are good to be adopted to the public.
What Is A Military Working Dog
MWD is the official name for retired police and military dogs. MWDs have been retired from duty usually due to the inability to perform required tasks, and sometimes due to health or age. Many have worked as field or training dogs, and have a unique set of skills honed for a specific purpose. In some cases, this can make potential owners nervous, but worry not all adoptable dogs have to pass behavioral tests to ensure theyre outgoing companions and a good fit for civilian adoption.

The Tsa’s Retired Bomb
Between sniffing out drugs and uncovering bombs, Transportation Security Administration-trained pups have an important job.
But what happens when they retire from their federal careers? Well, thats where you come in. At least, thats what TSA is hoping.
The TSA is looking for homes for retired explosives-detection dogs, as well as for dogs that didnt make it all the way through the training program. The dogs, usually aged 2 to 10, are typically German shorthaired pointers, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, or Belgian malinois.
These breeds all are known for being very active, and arent used to living in typical homes, so they may require extra attention to get accustomed to their new living situation, according to a TSA press release.
The TSA originally put out the call for adoptions in November, but recently told Country Living that the adoption program is ongoing and there are still dogs looking for families.
If you want to give a TSA dog a forever home, submit an application to to make sure you meet the requirements to adopt. Once approved, coordinators will help find the right fit for each dog and family.
