File A Restraining Order

2 Victims Of Unemployment Fraud Say They Couldn’t Get Through To Chicago Police To File Reports

If you’re in an emergency situation, call 911.

If you’ve been a victim of domestic abuse and want to take legal action, you may be able to file for a protective order. Protective orders are also known as restraining orders or injunctions.

The process for obtaining a protective order differs from state-to-state. Your local police and court can help you get the process started. Contact your state, county, or municipal court for more information.

Generally, you have to fill out paperwork and submit it to the county courthouse. If you need protection right away, a judge may issue a temporary restraining order. To get a longer-term order, your judge may require a full court hearing and/or your abuser’s presence.

A protective order can be enforced by police. If necessary, the order can include special provisions like:

  • Custody of children

  • Forcing the abuser to leave a home

In some states, a protective order requires the abuser to surrender all firearms.

Texas Rules Regarding Release Of Police Reports

The Texas Public Information Act allows the public to access public records, including police reports and reports where police action was requested or taken, and incident reports or reports of activity, such as a traffic accident or missing person where no crime occurred. To obtain a San Antonio incident report or a police report, request a copy of the San Antonio Police Department records online, in person or through the mail. Records requests are not required to be processed in a set number of days, but the law states that the City of San Antonio must either provide the information or inform you of when the information will be available within 10 business days of receiving your request.

To comply with privacy laws, the City of San Antonio may object to releasing certain data to the public, including:

  • Sexually oriented reports.
  • Reports with information about people not arrested, like suspects or witnesses.
  • Attempted suicide reports.
  • Reports of an emergency detention where a person is taken into custody without a warrant because an officer believes she is mentally ill and poses a substantial risk of harm to herself or others.
  • Information regarding active criminal investigations.

Security Camera Enrollment Program

The Riverwoods Police Department is requesting assistance from residents and businesses utilizing exterior security cameras by enrolling in our Security Camera Enrollment Program. Many of these cameras have views of areas beyond the property they are protecting, which could prove useful after the commission of a crime in the area. A doorbell camera, for example, may show the face of a suspect who later burglarized the home of a neighbor.

In the past, officers conducting neighborhood canvasses have worked with home and business owners who provided security camera footage of suspicious persons and vehicles, but some cameras are not obvious and may have been missed. In some instances, a camera was located, but the owners were not home and the police had no contact information. Time can be critical because many systems only hold footage for a limited amount of time.

If you have security cameras on your home or business, the Police Department requests you submit a voluntary enrollment form and be added to our list of camera users who can be contacted after a crime has been reported in their area. The list will only be used for reference by investigators after the commission of a crime. Submitted information shall be securely maintained and restricted to inspection by the Chief of Police and certain Police Department employees specifically assigned responsibility for handling and processing surveillance camera enrollment in the course of official duties.
