Virginia Beach Police Chief Signs National Pledge To Hire More Female Officers

More Videos

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. On Thursday, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate pledged to get more women police badges.

Right now, the Virginia Beach Police Department has 115 female officers.

From a Virginia Beach perspective, your police department is only 16% of our officers are female, and even more challenging only 2.5% are represented in our supervisory ranks,” said Nuedigate.

Homicide detective Angela Murphy was told she didn’t have what it took to become a police officer. Then she moved to Virginia Beach.

When I first wanted to be a police officer, I started applying back home where I’m from,” Murphy said. “The chief of police looked me right in my face and told me I was too feminine to be a police officer, and look at me now.”

Murphy has been with the Virginia Beach police department for 16 years.

She and other female officers are making sure more women feel empowered. Murphy said women have the skills every department needs to protect and serve their communities.

Its easier sometimes to get people to open up. A lot of times you know pride, ego, all that kind of stuff gets in the way sometimes. We have a better way of calming people down,” Murphy said.

Neudigate signed and committed to the national pledge called the 30×30 Initiative. The coalition is made up of different agencies with a mission to get more women into police academies.

“The goal of ensuring at least 30% of our future academy classes are female by the year 2030,” said Neudigate.

Law Enforcement Officers

  • Three Required Steps for the Initial Certification as a Virginia Law Enforcement Officer

Upon employment, law enforcement officer trainees have 12 months to complete the compulsory minimum training standards. The law enforcement officer certification is obtained by successfully completing the basic law enforcement academy, the law enforcement state certification exam and completing field training for law enforcement officers within 12 months. The initial law enforcement officer certification is not valid until all three steps have been completed and the documentation of the required 100 hours minimum of law enforcement field training has been sent to DCJS, and entered into the training records management system.

If the law enforcement officer trainee cannot meet the 12 month requirement for completion of the three steps to certification, the agency may request an extension for additional time to complete the compulsory minimum training standards. The agency must submit a request to DCJS prior to the initial 12 months expiration date and provide the reason for the extension request. Agencies must contact DCJS Field Services for further assistance.

Virginia Beach Police Spent More Than 18000 Hours On Mental Health Crises Last Year

Virginia Beach police officer will soon become department
    Details
    Category: Local News

The hours Virginia Beach Police have spent on mental health crises has increased almost 12% over the past year, according to a Freedom of Information Act Request filed by WHRO.

The department responded to 3,186 mental health incidents last year, equaling 18,795 hours of police work, according to the departments accounting.

Those hours are taxing police department resources as officers also face shortages of mental health staff, difficulties finding facilities and legal red tape that slows their response down during crises.

The mental health calls for service are certainly some of the most prevalent cases we handle right now, said Sgt. James Jaskowiak. He coordinates Virginia Beach polices Crisis Intervention Team.

CIT programs are designed to connect police with mental health workers, hospital staff and emergency dispatchers. The goal is to help police get training – and advice in the moment – when they approach someone in a mental health crisis.

The CIT model is used in 2,700 localities nationwide, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Once a crisis intervention team helps de-escalate a situation, they face a serious challenge to find the proper care for people.

The infrastructure can’t handle the demand, Jaskowiak said. That is our biggest issue.

Finding a safe place for a person in crisis is difficult, he said.
