The Lower Merion Police Department will be accepting applications for the position of Probationary Police Officer beginning Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. There is a $30.00 application fee. The deadline for applications is Friday, November 4, 2022 at 4:00 p.m.

The written test will be conducted on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. at the Lower Merion High School Cafeteria . The physical fitness test will be conducted on Sunday, November 13, 2022 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Harriton High School running track .

- $71,675 Hired without Act 120 Training
- $80,350 Hired with Act 120 Training
- $114,180 Current 2022 salary for Senior Police Officer

Act 1: Municipal Police Academy
To be employed as a police officer in the state of Pennsylvania,an individual must successfully completea certified Act 120 program and pass the MPOETC state certification exam.
TheCriminal Justice Training Centeroffers full-time and part-time Act 120programs. Full-time academies meet from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and usually take about 22 weeks to complete. Part-time programs are designed for people who work or whose schedules don’t enable them to be in classes all day. These academies meet about 20 hours a week: three evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Duration is about 49 weeks.

Earn A High School Diploma Or Ged
The minimum education requirement to work as a police officer in Pennsylvania is a high school diploma or GED. Icipate In Field Training
After graduating from a training academy, you can complete your field training. Field training involves working with an experienced officer, known as a field training officer, to grow your skills and prepare you for your position in law enforcement. You may observe them as they perform standard policing tasks and you may assist them in various situations, including arrests and traffic stops. The number of required field hours that you may complete can vary depending on the police department. Generally, the field training officer determines when you’re ready to work independently as an officer.

It has been 13 years since Pittsburgh police officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo were killed, responding to a call in the Stanton Heights neighborhood.
I have his chain, I have a tattoo on my arm of him, pictures in every room of my house, Steve Sciullo said.
Paul Sciullos cousins Steve Sciullo and Bill Garrison spoke to students and alumni at Central Catholic High school, on the 13th anniversary of Sciullos death.
Paul Sciullo graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1991, then Duquesne University. Sciullo worked in the corporate world before deciding he needed to make a difference and become a Pittsburgh police officer.
Paul exemplified what Central is all about just character, faith, service, Garrison said. He lived those values.
Two years after becoming a police officer, Sciullo was killed.
Garrison has now created a podcast, That Was Paul. The podcast shares stories about Paul Sciullos life. Many of the stories are told by his parents, Susie and Max Sciullo.

Get The Right Police Education & Training
There was a time when becoming a police officer was as simple as graduating high school or earning your GED, then attending a short training academy before diving into on-the-job training. And though those opportunities do still exist, especially in smaller departments, most departments have raised their standards of education to at least two years of post-secondary work. This means pursing an associate degree in law enforcement or a related field, such as criminal justice, criminology, or police science should be the first option to consider. The associate degree can then serve as a stepping stone to the bachelors degree, which then leads to graduate degree options.
However, other routes to the profession do exist. In addition to the on-the-job training after completing academy training, there is also the military option. Those who work as military police or in a similar capacity while serving their country can be perfectly suited to move into a police force after their military time is up. Lets take a look at the options.

How Do I Become A Police Officer
In order to be a Police Officer in Pennsylvania you must be Act 120 Certified. Certification is achieved by attending the Municipal Police Officers Education & Training Commission Police Academy. There are two basic ways to attend an Academy:
Pre-Service: Paying your our way through the Academy. You would need to apply to an Academy and get accepted. Once you complete the Academy and Certification process you would be able to apply to Police Departments for Police Officer positions.
In-Service: This is when a Police Department pays your way through the Academy. If a job is list and ACT 120 is not a requirement anyone may apply. If you are hired the Police Department will send you to the academy.

Complete The Screening And Testing Process
After reviewing applications, police departments select several recruits to complete the screening process. This is a process that allows them to determine if you’re eligible for training. This process begins with a full background check that provides an overview of your criminal record. It also includes your employment history. Then, you can complete an extensive interview with a police chief or recruiter that asks questions regarding your interest in becoming a police officer, your ethics and moral character and your respect for law enforcement.
You may also complete a polygraph test, which is an examination that allows you to provide honest answers about your qualifications and criminal background. The final part of this process involves a drug screening. After you successfully pass the screening process, you can do several physical, medical and psychological exams that demonstrate your readiness to work as a police officer. MCOETC also requires that all police officer recruits complete the Nelson-Denny Reading Test and a personality assessment.
