Tips For A Burglary Insurance Claim

Who’s responsible for damage from police pursuits?

Would you know what to do if your home was damaged or your stuff was stolen in a burglary? Start by reporting the burglary to police, the III says. You’ll also want to promptly get in touch with your insurance agent to file a claim.

Your insurer may ask for a copy of the police report, or the case number, to process the claim. Additionally, it’s a good idea to document any property damage with photos or video and prepare a list of the stolen items to provide to your insurer, the III says. If you already have a home inventory, it may expedite this process.

You’ll also want to make any emergency repairs that will help protect your home from further damage, the III says. For instance, you may immediately want to replace broken window panes or door locks that were damaged during the break-in. Be sure to save your receipts for expenses incurred during repairs, the III says, because those expenses may be reimbursed by your insurance provider.

You probably never expect to be the victim of a burglary, but if you are, knowing what to expect from your insurance afterward can be a good first step to putting the pieces back together.

When the police asked for help contacting a tenant in her Troy apartment building, Laura Szemplinski didn’t hesitate.

She answered the officers’ questions about the building and provided them with keys.

The following morning, she awoke to find a barrage of frantic messages from alarmed tenants and neighbors on her phone. They had been awakened around 4:30 a.m. by a large crew of Schenectady police storming a top-floor apartment.

When she reached the building, she found the apartment’s metal fire door had been mangled by a battering ram. The force of the blows also had wrecked the frame and even dislodged the wall between the apartment and the hall, leaving gaps along the ceiling and bathroom partitions.

Inside, the place had been ransacked, strewn with DVDs, and cluttered with clothing and other possessions thrown in heaps and piles. The bottom drawer of a stove was torn off.

Beyond that, it’s hard to tell how much of the apartment’s miserable condition is attributable to the police, how much results from the former tenant’s living habits and how much is just the nature of the place.

Szemplinski’s former tenant has not returned since the raid.

But in Szemplinski’s case, “her circumstances are a bit different,” he noted.

When Are Broken Tvs Not Covered By Homeowners Insurance

The bad news is that your homeowners insurance policy doesnt cover all types of damage under the personal property portion. For instance, an insurance policy will likely cover you if someone breaks into your home and smashes your TV and damages or steals your personal belongings.

However, if your child vandalizes it by drawing pictures on it, home insurance doesnt usually cover that.

Other types of TV damage where you probably aren’t covered include:

Can You Buy Extra Insurance For An Expensive Tv

Does My Auto or Homeowners Insurance Police Cover Mailbox Damage ...

Yes, you can buy more coverage, but the question is does that make sense.

You should ask yourself how much it’ll set you back if that expensive TV were to be ruined. Before you go and buy an insurance rider, you should study your own current policy. If you need more coverage, you could shop around for a different policy or talk to your agent about adding a rider.

So much of this type of decision, though, often goes beyond covering one item, like an expensive TV. If you own one expensive TV, but dont have many other valuables, you shouldn’t buy extra insurance for an expensive TV. Maybe put extra money in a bank account every month, so you’ll have something saved up if something happens to the TV.

But if you have a really expensive TV and other pricey possessions like jewelry and antiques, you may want to consider extra insurance coverage.

How Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Vandalism

When filing a claim for vandalism, itll likely be covered by one of these three coverage components. Heres how.

    • Dwelling coverage: Pays for repairs to the structure of your home and attached structures like an attached garage if it’s vandalized or damaged by a covered peril, like a fire or home break-in.

    • Other structures coverage: Pays for repairs to detached structures on your property like a shed or fence if theyre vandalized or damaged by a different peril.

    • Personal property coverage: Pays to repair or replace your personal belongings like your couch or lawnmower if theyre vandalized or damaged by a covered peril.

Each coverage component has a coverage limit, meaning the maximum amount an insurer will pay out for a covered loss. And certain personal property like firearms and jewelry have special sublimits that are usually lower than standard coverage limits, like $2,500 for firearms

Property damage claims require a deductible

Keep in mind that when you file a claim for property damage, you first have to pay a deductible. A deductible is the amount youre responsible for paying out of pocket before insurance kicks in for repairs. You set your own deductible when you purchase your policy, and most insurers give you the option of setting it to $500, $1,000, or $2,000.

What Do You Do If Your House Is Vandalized

Vandalism, whether a byproduct of rioting or just the work of neighborhood rogues, can cause all sorts of damage, including broken windows and damage to landscaping or fencing. If your home or other property is damaged, take the following steps to begin the process of recovery.

    • Report damage to the policy. Any damage caused by a riot is considered a crime, so call the police and file a report if this happens to you. Keep this information on hand in case you need to file an insurance claim.
    • Notify your insurance company. Depending on the extent of damage, your next step might be to call your insurance company directly to start the claims process. Some providers may also offer a mobile app to use. Make sure you file as soon as possible following the event.
    • Schedule an appointment with the insurance adjuster. The adjuster will come to your home and assess the value of the damage caused by the riot.
    • Create an inventory of lost or damaged items. This helps the adjuster create an accurate quote of what has been damaged or stolen. Doing this step prior to the adjuster visit can speed up the process and improve the accuracy of your reimbursement.
    • Retain receipts for additional living expenses. If youre being reimbursed for living elsewhere while your home is repaired, keep all receipts so that your insurance company can cover the applicable costs. This can include meals, gas and lodging.

When Is Roof Damage Not Covered

Experts warn to check your homeowners insurance, as cost of building items continue to soar

Homeowners insurance doesnt relieve you of the responsibility of maintaining your home. If procrastinating minor repairs leads to roof damage, the insurer may deny your claim.

Many home insurance companies wont issue a new or renew an existing policy if your roof is more than 20 years old. Some types of roofs last longer than others. For instance, a metal roof can hold up for 30 to 40 years, while asphalt shingles may need to be replaced after 12 years. In some cases, insurance companies will only pay actual cash value to repair or replace an older damaged roof, leaving you to foot the bill for the bulk of expenses. To avoid costly repair or replacement costs, periodically have a licensed roofing inspector check your roof.

If an insurance adjuster decides that neglect caused your roof damage, the insurer may deny your claim. For example, if you fail to replace a few shingles that blew off during a storm, further water exposure could rot your roofs structure. Your insurance provider likely wont cover that damage. Likewise, the carrier may also decline a claim if neglecting to make timely repairs causes damage to other parts of your homes structure or your belongings.

Avoiding roof damage goes beyond proper structural maintenance. If you have trees in your yard, remove limbs that extend over your roof and dead trees that could fall in a windstorm.

    Get A Fire Investigation Report

An initial fire report is not the same as a report that’s filed after an official fire investigation. Indeed, an investigation may be required if the fire has resulted in a major injury or death, a high dollar-amount loss, fire-related felony violations of the penal code or the municipality’s possible exposure to liability. The fire investigation report will include information that’s not found in the initial report:

    • Estimated losses quote

    • Factors, including possible human agency, for how the fire got started

    • Presence of any smoke detectors

Your insurance company will want this document. If your fire department doesn’t have a fire investigation unit, you could appeal to the state, hire a licensed independent investigator or just rely on the initial fire report.

Replacement Cost Vs Actual Cash Value

If your home is destroyed, your homeowners insurance company isnt likely to simply write you a check for the amount listed on your policy. Your payout could differ depending on the cost to rebuild and the coverage you chose and much of it will be paid directly to contractors rebuilding your home, in many cases.

One key decision is whether to choose coverage that will pay whatever it takes to rebuild your home, even if that cost exceeds your policy limits. This situation may arise, for instance, if construction costs have increased in your area while your coverage has remained level. Heres a rundown of several options you may encounter.

Actual cash value coverage pays the cost to repair or replace your damaged property, minus a deduction for depreciation. Most policies dont use this method for the house itself, but its common for personal belongings. For items that are several years old, this means youll probably get only a fraction of what it would cost to buy new ones.

Functional replacement cost value coverage pays to fix your home with materials that are similar but possibly cheaper. For example, damaged plaster walls could be replaced with less expensive drywall.

Replacement cost value coverage pays to repair your home with materials of like kind and quality, so plaster walls can be replaced with plaster. However, the payout wont exceed your policys dwelling coverage limits.

    What Is Fire Insurance

Fire coverage is part of a homeowners insurance policy. It is designed to help pay for repairs or replacements of your home or belongings when youâre the victim of a house fire. It can also help pay for damage to surrounding structures like detached garages or sheds, fences, or even neighboring houses that suffer damage from your house fire.

    How Fire Insurance Works

Like any type of insurance, youâll need to file a claim with an insurance agent in order to get your home repairs covered.

After making sure your family and pets are okay, youâll need to call your insurance agent to file a claim. They will ask for your personal and policy information, the details of the fire , a description of the fire and the resulting damage, photos or videos of the damage, and the official report from the police or fire department. Once they have all that information, they can begin processing your claim.

After they have the claim started, your insurance company will send out an inspector to assess the damage and report back. The insurance provider will use that information to determine whether your home can be repaired or whether youâre looking at a rebuild or new purchase, and theyâll let you know how much they will cover. You can then get started with repairing the damage caused by the fire.

Does Home Insurance Cover Historically Accurate Repairs

If you live in a landmark area and you need permission from the historical society to make changes to your home, there might be a cap on how much your insurance will pay to fix a problem. And the historical society might dictate the kinds of material you must use on your home, no matter how expensive it is.

A hailstorm decimated all of these historic homes in Dallas recently, says Trent. What should have been a $9,000 vinyl siding repair ended up costing homeowners $90,000, because the historical society insisted they use a specific type of shingle. A typical policy would not have made up that difference.
