No matter what your home country calls it, this document is issued as part of a background check conducted by police or government agencies. It will list any criminal history for your stay in a specific area. Information found in a police clearance certificate may include:

The purpose of a police clearance certificate is to prove your moral character. The United States screens all green card petitioners to ensure only ethical, responsible applicants are approved. A criminal record may cause your petition to be denied.

For a fee, the FBI can provide individuals with an Identity History Summaryoften referred to as a criminal history record or a rap sheetlisting certain information taken from fingerprint submissions kept by the FBI and related to arrests and, in some instances, federal employment, naturalization, or military service.
If the fingerprint submissions are related to an arrest, the Identity History Summary includes the name of the agency that submitted the fingerprints to the FBI, the date of the arrest, the arrest charge, and the disposition of the arrest, if known. All arrest information included in an Identity History Summary is obtained from fingerprint submissions, disposition reports, and other information submitted by authorized criminal justice agencies.
The U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73, also known as Departmental Order, establishes rules and regulations for you to obtain a copy of your Identity History Summary for review or proof that one does not exist.
Under federal law, you can use your Identity History Summary to review, correct, or update your own personal record. Identity History Summaries are not to be used for employment or licensing. Questions on employment or licensing background checks should be directed to the State Identification Bureau for the state requiring the background check.
Where To Obtain A Police Certificate
You can determine where to obtain a police certificate with the U.S. Visa: Reciprocity and Civil Documents by Country resource. First, select the country you are trying to obtain the records from on the left side column. Then scroll down the page to the Police, Court, Prison Records tab, and you will be shown the fees, issuing authority, and procedure for obtaining records. For example, if you select Albania, you will see the following information below.
All the information you need will be listed in this section for your country. If the guidelines say unavailable, then you should consult your lawyer on the best course of action. In some cases, you will need to submit a notarized affidavit explaining why you could not obtain the international police certificate.

Where Do I Get A Police Clearance Certificate
The U.S. Department of State lists police clearance certificate issuing authorities on their reciprocity page. Countries are listed alphabetically by the first letter.
For example, if your home country is Mexico, click on the letter M and scroll down to Mexico. In this case, the issuing authority for police clearance certificates is the State Police . The proper procedure to obtain a police certificate from Mexico will be to contact the individual State Police for instructions.
Each country may have slightly different procedures for issuing a police clearance certificate. However, you will likely be required to visit a police station to provide your:

The FBIs authority to conduct an Identity History Summary check for noncriminal justice purposes is based upon Public Law 92-544. Pursuant to that law, the FBI is empowered to exchange Identity History Summary information with officials of state and local governments for employment, licensingwhich includes volunteersand other similar noncriminal justice purposes, if authorized by a state statute which has been approved by the Attorney General of the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice has advised that the state statute establishing guidelines for a category of employment or the issuance of a license must, in itself, require fingerprinting and authorize the governmental licensing or employing agency to exchange fingerprint data directly with the FBI.

When Does The Pc Expire
Most Police Clearance Certificates dont have an expiration date. Unless this PC specifically says it has one, the US Embassy generally accepts it if its less than 1 year old.
However, theres another way that PCs expire: if you visit the country again without getting a fresh PC.
Remember, PCs must cover a specific time period of your stay in a particular country in order to be valid. If you visit said country again, you need to get a fresh PC to cover the new time period of your visit.

How To Get An Original Fbi Police Certificate

Read the procedures on how to obtain various documents. Click on the Police, court, Prison Records to view. All countries will give you directions on how to get reports or if its even required.
Note that YOU must deal directly with the issuing authority to get the certificates. The US Embassy will not request it on your behalf.

Realize that some countries do not issue a Police Certificate at all. They may only provide Police Certificates if you apply in-person at their office. If thats the case, you may not be required to bring a Police Certificate from that country unless you happen to be there in person.
