Acquire A Degree Or Academy Training
The requirements for this step will vary substantially depending on the state in which you plan on becoming a police officer. Some states do not require their officers to be college-educated, even if they may prefer it. Other states, like Minnesota, an Associates degree or equivalent training is one of the requirements to become a police officer.
Generally speaking, the training process for aspiring police officers follows two routes:
- Completing training by earning a two- or four-year degree in Criminal Justice or similar field from a Peace Officer Standings and Training -certified college or university, or
- Completing training through a government-approved police academy or training program.
Since police officer requirements differ, youll want to be sure to check with the agency that sets the standards for law enforcement training and licensure in your area. Some also have arrangements for military reciprocity, allowing candidates who served in the military to follow a different process in acknowledgement of the training they already have.
Whichever path you take, your training will include classroom instruction in state and local laws, covering topics like constitutional law, civil rights and police ethics. Recruits also receive training and supervised experience in areas such as patrol, traffic control, firearm use, self-defense, first aid and emergency response.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, in cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Service, Northern District of Illinois, U.S. Department of Justice, and the Illinois State Police, is conducting an investigation into non-governmental, legally unrecognized, and unauthorized “auxiliary/reserve police organizations” offering “police assistance, services, and employees” to county and local police agencies. Certain illicit organizations have been successful in convincing law enforcement agencies that they are legitimate. These organizations have also attempted to create an appearance of authority through financial records and other “legal” documents to avoid constitutional requirements establishing real law enforcement authority for the use of police powers. Since this Board is responsible for the certification of all law enforcement personnel in the State of Illinois, we wanted you to be aware of this situation in order to avoid jeopardizing the safety and security of your community. What Do You Need To Become A Police Constable In Toronto
Officer candidates follow a detailed application and training process to become police constables with TPS. Once hired, new recruits attend the Ontario Police College for Basic Constable Training. You need to meet the following minimum requirements to become a Police Constable in Toronto:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada,
- Be at least 18 years of age,
- Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to your own safety and the safety of members of the public,
- Have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent. . Where education has been completed outside Ontario, official proof of equivalency must be obtained,
- Be of good moral character and habits, meaning that you are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity.
In addition, you must:

- Have current certification in CPR and first aid by the time the offer of employment is given,

- Have a minimum of 20/40 vision, with normal colour acuity,

What About The Police Academy
If you get past all that, you then get to go through an exhausting physical and mental challenge known as the police academy. It should be noted that some agencies will require completion of an approved police academy course before applying for open positions, so be sure to check with the specific departments you’re interested in almost all large agenices, like the NYPD, will require completion of their own in-house program once a conditional offer of employment has been accepted.
And yes, you have to complete a police academy prior to becoming a cop, even if you already have a college degree in a criminal justice-related field. While there is no standardized curriculum for police academies nationwide, you can expect an average of 833 hours of classroom instruction, which will take just shy of five months to complete.
After that, youll enter a tough on-the-job training program with a field training officer, after which you can expect to be on probation as a rookie officer for at least a year in some places, up to two.

Florida has 66 sheriffs, one for each of the states counties, except for Miami-Dade County, which has a countywide combined police and sheriffs department.* In Florida, sheriffs serve four-year terms. Iletsb School Resource Officer: Preliminary Program Policies And Curriculum

In accordance with the requirements of PA 100-984, the Board approved a preliminary draft for our School Resource Officer program policies and curriculum at the last Board meeting. This allows for further review and feedback to be gathered before courses must be conducted and officers seek to complete training before the January 1, 2021 deadline.
This document was prepared in coordination with the Shriver Center on Poverty Law and is a culmination of feedback from stakeholders and interested parties, including current SROs, chiefs and sheriffs, school administrators, community advocates, parent groups, trainers, and Board staff. As the notes and feedback of those meetings were compiled, it became clear that the general consensus was for SROs to be trained in youth communication, recognition of hardships and disabilities, threat recognition and response, and the intricacies of Illinois juvenile protection statutes.
Ultimately, we determined that officers who had previously attended a recognized School Resource Officer Course may be eligible for a waiver if they also attended a juvenile law course and an active threat response course. These elements became the building blocks of the course and program we developed. Under this structure, officers have two options for attaining an SRO certificate, attend our course, or attend other Board-certified courses in the 3 topic areas.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer
The process of becoming a police officer requires a significant investment of your time. The duration varies and depends on how quickly and accurately an individual completes the forms and assessments. This also depends on the police agency you apply at.
The CPS states that their process takes between 3-6 months to complete. The RCMP doesnt provide a set duration for the entire process their cadet training takes 26 weeks. At the VPD, the recruit training alone takes up to 44 weeks in total.
Generally, you can expect to set aside 6 months for your application process. We recommend that you contact the police agency that youre interested in to find out how long their process takes from start to finish.

A certificate in criminal justice or criminology is an opportunity for individuals to gain specific instruction in an area of law enforcement. All Peace Officer candidates must undergo a thorough background investigation which includes a drug test. When directed by the academy staff, Pre-Service Candidates should contact Professional Screening and Information . The current cost for the PSI background investigation for Pre-Service Candidates is $245.00 and is payable online. Contact your academy of choice to obtain the organization code and Chain of Custody form, when applicable, for the drug test. Lead Homicide Investigator Approved Classes Certification And Recertification Process

Effective 01-01-2012, under 50 ILCS 705/10.11, only law enforcement officers who successfully complete the Board certified 40-hour Lead Homicide Investigator training program may be assigned as lead investigators in homicide investigations.
All Lead Homicide Investigators certified by the Training Board are required to obtain 32 hours of approved LHI in-service training in a 4 year period from the date of their certification.
The Training Board has approved many in-service classes for LHI certificate renewal. Agencies are responsible for ensuring LHIs attend approved classes. Below is the current list of in-service classes approved for Lead Homicide Investigator re-certification. However, please check with your local MTU and/or the Executive Institute to get the most up-to-date list of LHI approved classes being offered in your region, as additional classes are being added on a regular basis. It is suggested that agencies submit their Lead Homicide Investigators re-certification paperwork no sooner than 3 months and no later than 6 months prior to the end of the 4th year.

Police Officer Hiring Process
The police officer hiring process is much different than that of any other job. It is not simply attending an interview and then being approved for the position. In order to become a police officer, you need to undergo a series of tests and each of them can disqualify you. The entire process is quite competitive and each police department can put more importance on a single element of the process rather than on the other. Nevertheless, the hiring process consists of several elements that are common for each agency no matter if we talk about local, state or federal law enforcement.
