From Security Guard To Police Officer

While there are a fair number of employment opportunities, as you have seen in the information presented in this article, policy agencies hire only the most suitable candidates. So you need to do what you can to ensure that your application stands out from the rest.

Police agency recruiters advise applicants to significantly improve their chances of being selected through:

  • Private Security Jobs: Security jobs provide a work experience that prepares you for your role as a police officer. The skills you learn, the duties involved, the situations you encounter as well as the opportunities to work alongside law enforcement officers, all provide well-rounded preparation for your future role as a police officer.
  • Awards: Awards that recognize your ability to be a top performer are a strong indicator of work ethic.
  • Volunteer Experience & Community Involvement: Contributing your time to an organization that does meaningful work demonstrates good character. Be an active member of your community to show that participating and serving your community is important to you.
  • Training & Education: While a degree in criminology would help, you dont necessarily need post-secondary education. Relevant training and education can include training that you receive on the job as a security officer. And unlike the time and financial investment involved in post-secondary education, you can get paid while you learn with a job as a security guard.
  • Prior Offences And Voluntary Disclosure Form

Your previous history will be continually checked and assessed.

Failure to declare information may result in automatic cancellation of your application.

If you have any of the following, we recommend that you submit a Voluntary Disclosure Form prior to submitting an application:

    • prior convictions
    • good behaviour bonds
    • or excessive driving offences.

This will allow you to find out whether your prior history is likely to disqualify you from being considered for the role.

All offences, including those that were committed as a juvenile, must be disclosed in your application.

No. Both entry-level and lateral candidates must have 3-5 years as a patrol officer before transfers or promotions. Having experience with the unpredictable and diverse nature of events that come with patrol work is absolutely vital background knowledge before making a transition to any other type of police work. Modern policing is very complex and every city is very different so it is also important that you learn the specifics of this department and this city before any transfers.

People choose to go into policing because they love the job. In fact, many patrol officers find that they love the work so much that they choose to stay in patrol for their entire career. If you are not interested in patrol work at all and only want to be part of an advanced specialty unit, you are probably not ready to realistically consider a career in policing.

Increasing Maximum Hiring Age Of New Police Officers Rejected By Park Ridge City Council Not Supported By Police Chief

Thank you for supporting our journalism. This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Chicago Tribune.

A proposal to increase the maximum age at hiring of new police officers in Park Ridge failed to generate support from elected officials or the citys chief of police this month.

Six of Park Ridges seven aldermen said on Nov. 15 that they are not interested in pursuing an ordinance change that would bump up the cut-off age for new police officers from 35 to 40. The proposal would have applied to both entry-level hires and lateral transfers from other police departments.

Some elected officials also raised objections on how the proposal came about and that legal work on the ordinance was performed without authorization from the city.

The age change request came from the Park Ridge Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, a volunteer body with five members appointed by the mayor with approval of the City Council. Among the boards duties are establishing lists of qualified candidates for hiring and promotion within the police and fire departments.

Peter McNamara, chairman of the board, suggested that increasing the maximum age of new hires may allow for a larger pool of officer candidates at a time when the number of individuals applying to become police officers has fallen.

Do Most Of Your Officers Come From Similar Backgrounds

No, the backgrounds of our officers are varied and diverse. Some of our officers have decided to proudly continue a family tradition of service. Others knew they wanted to be police officers ever since they can remember and come to the department with college degrees in Criminal Justice, although this is not required. Others have a prior military background, or have transferred to the department as a lateral hire from another agency. Still others are attracted to this career through their interactions with police officers in social work or law careers. But many of our officers have backgrounds and interests not at all related to law enforcement and have decided to go into policing as a second or third career.

    Assessment Of Work History

We conduct an assessment of work history early in the process as it is a very good predictor of success.

Later stages require applicants to relate lived experiences to answer the behavioural questions. These include:

    • the video screening interview
    • 1:1 psych interview
    • and panel interview.

Without experience gained mainly from employment, applicants are unlikely to succeed. This is why we recommend that applicants have some form of paid employment during the process.

If you are not employed when you apply, that does not mean an automatic exclusion.

If your previous work history shows strong work ethic and drive, you can still succeed. You might have finished a role and are looking for a career change, or returning from a break due to caring responsibilities.
