    Theresa Doherty believed her goal of becoming an officer with the Toronto Police Service was not only possible but that she was in line for a coveted job offer, and that it was only a matter of time.

    In April 2014, three years into the lengthy process of applying, Doherty says a police background officer called her to attend a spring recruiting class and then asked a question that today has led her to file a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.

    The question struck her as odd and inappropriate. Police already knew the answer. She was 51 when she passed an initial job interview.

    Doherty, who was 53 at the time of the question, and today is 55, is a self-described late bloomer who put education and career aspirations on hold while raising six children.

    I always thought that would be to my advantage, Doherty said in an interview at the dining room table of her rural Peterborough home. It doesnt matter how old you are. If you have successfully completed everything thats required and you continually do so, then age should not be a factor.

    A police certification test that was good for three years had just expired when she was asked her age. According to Dohertys human rights complaint, the background officer told her she would need to redo paperwork and resubmit it, and believing she was still in line for a job she did so immediately.

    Doherty says she did all of this while money was tight.

    How To Become An Ontario Provincial Police Officer

    Interested in joining the Ontario Provincial Police? Here are just a few of the minimum qualifications needed to beat out the competition:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age

    Police Academy And Training

    Everyone has to start somewhere, and for police officers, that is the police academy. Expect your police academy training to last approximately six months. During that time, you’ll receive basic law enforcement training to prepare you for the next step in your career: field training.

    As grueling as the academy training is, the field training officer program is that much more difficult. The FTO period lasts between 8 and 12 weeks, and you’ll need to put all of your academy training into practice.     Physical Disqualifier: You cannot be in poor physical condition. Failure to successfully complete the physical examination in the minimum time frame is an automatic disqualification.

    Test particulars can vary from one police agency to the next. However, all tests simulate critical incidents that police officers are exposed to. For example. the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation , used by the RCMP, consists of three sections:

  • Running 6 laps around a 350-meter obstacle course where you are required to climb stairs and jump over hurdles
  • Pushing and pulling a 70lb weight
  • Carrying 80lbs over a 15-meter distance.
  • Psychological Disqualifiers: A candidate can be disqualified if they do not meet the minimum psychological examination requirements.

    Work Environment Disqualifiers: Police departments require you to work shift work which includes nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as policing takes place 24 hours per day. If you are unwilling to accommodate this type of work schedule, you will be disqualified from the process.

    Interview And Background Check

    The next step is the interview phase. Local focus and essential competency interviews are conducted. The candidate is also subjected to a psychological test along with an interview with a psychologist. The candidate’s background is subsequently reviewed. This background investigation is quite extensive. It can delve into references, the verification of prior employment, educational achievements and even credit card information.
