  • No Two Officers Are Alike

There is no one size fits all description for what a cop should look or be like. As officers deal with so many different types of people it only makes sense that the force should also be made up of different types of people. Each police force should, in some way, mirror the people they are assigned to keep safe. Communities of different races, social and financial standings etc. should be handled by appropriate and experienced types of officers.

One cop cannot do it all alone. Communities are best served by a police force that can function together as a team with each officer bringing something unique to the table. This creates a well-rounded force that can protect their jurisdiction most effectively. Including many officers of different ages and experiences will benefit the police force as a whole.

Age Might Be Just A Number

Your age at the time of application is far less important for a majority of departments than whether you can physically perform the job. You’re ahead of the game regardless of your age if you’re in good shape and can demonstrate that you can handle the physical rigors that a police officer is likely to encounter on the job.

Check with departments you’d like to work for to make sure there aren’t any age restrictions. Some, such as the New York State Police and the federal governmentdo have maximum age limits. But you can likely find a department near you that will hire you at any age if you meet the other qualifications because there are so many law enforcement agencies within the U.S.

    The Power Of Life Experience

Within any industry, general life experience is worth a lot. Young cops starting out come with little to no life experience and lets be realistic, you definitely benefit from it when working in law enforcement. Throughout the majority of the US you must be between 19 and 21 to become certified as a police officer. At this age, most rookies are unaware of the problems happening in the area on a daily basis, let alone know how to deal with them.

With age comes life experience. This will hugely benefit you in your role as an officer and law enforcement agencies know this.

Look At Maturity And Life Experience Not Age

How Old To Become Police Officer

We have hired people in their late 20s and early 30s who didn’t make it. I think it has to be a maturity level of emotions and a completely clear understanding of what LE actually does and sees and experiences rather than posting an age requirement. David Garcia

I started as a reserve deputy at the age of 19. As the head of my office, I would not make that type of decision to hire such a young person regardless of how mature they are. You can hire too young, but I believe you can’t hire too old. I think 24-28 is a great range for a first-time officer. A little maturity and life experience are necessary for this type of career. Chris Matthews

Age doesn’t matter. Relevant education, life and work experience, and maturity matter. To gain most of that takes a certain time, so I would say 18 is illogical, even 21 isn’t old enough in most cases. Kids who go straight into an academy after high school should have a transitional stage where they work with training officers or have other positions like in detention that are easier to monitor instead of sending them out on their own. Dominique Gourdon

The age doesnt need to change, but I do believe anyone who wants to be an officer should be required to have at least one year of jail experience. The minimum age for that is 18. Dustin Bresko

After the department was disbanded in connection with financial impropriety in 2011, Wilson joined the Ferguson Police Department.

Discussions of the officers who shoot and kill usually focus on their race, their gender, and sometimes their histories of personal misconduct or violence. Those details are important. One thing rarely mentioned is the officers age. In a new article, I argue that ignoring age in hiring perpetuates and exacerbates harmful policing and that the minimum age at which police are hired must be reconsidered in order to reduce the harm police officers cause.

Most U.S. states set minimum hiring ages for police between 18 and 21 years old. That means these 18- to 21-year-olds have access not only to guns, something that is beginning to be questioned in the context of gun purchases, but also to the imprimatur and power of the state. The Supreme Courts children are different jurisprudence, informed by neuroscience and psychology, has dramatically changed thinking about adolescence in the law. More recently, this science has begun to influence thinking about emerging adults in the criminal legal system, but not much thought has been given to how the research should inform the qualifications for those in charge of that system.
