In some communities, off-duty assignments for police officers are managed by one senior officer in the department with strict rules on who gets assigned to each post. They may operate on a seniority system, union rules, or on a revolving list. Off Duty Police Officer Request
The Atlantic Beach Police Department allows citizens to hire off-duty police officers to perform security and traffic control services. Officers are often hired to provide security and traffic control at large and small events, traffic control for projects in the roadway, security, and many other situations.
The hourly rate of pay charged by Atlantic Beach Police Department is $40.00 per hour with a 4 hour minimum for off duty police services, such as: residential parties, estate sales, security jobs and traffic control. Cancellations may be made at any time, however if the cancellation is less than 24 hours before the start of the requested time, a minimum of 4 hours salary will be incurred by the requesting party. The hourly rate of pay on the following days is $50.00 per hour, with a 4 hour minimum: New Years Eve, New Years Day, St. Patricks Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
If a police vehicle is needed to perform the job duties, an additional $25.00 fee per day/per vehicle is required, payable to the City of Atlantic Beach. A marked police vehicle is required with all traffic related off duty employment such as road construction and repairs. The police vehicle fee is required to offset the cost of the vehicles fuel and maintenance. This fee may be waived by the off duty employment supervisor, depending on the nature of the vehicles usage.

We will assign off-duty police officers for special events and circumstances in response to requests from citizens or businesses to the extent permitted by existing resources and in accordance with department procedures. The primary intent of extra-duty assignments is to provide a supplementary service to the community by assigning available off-duty uniformed officers to security, crowd control, or traffic related details which do not fall within the scope of the on-duty patrol officer’s responsibilities, yet which are reasonably expected to require the services of a sworn police officer. The business or citizen requesting this service is required to pay for the officers’ services at a rate established by the police department. Requests for services which exceed the department’s capabilities or are not consistent with the professional law enforcement policies of the department will not be honored. All extra-duty police services provided by Clearwater Police must be within the Clearwater city limits.
Clearwater police officers do not arrange their own “off duty jobs.” All job requests are screened and assigned by the Clearwater Police Department.
